¹My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

¹Ärgu püüdku paljud teie seast, mu vennad, saada õpetajaiks! Te teate ju, et meie osaks on teistest karmim kohtuotsus.

²For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

²Me kõik eksime paljus. Kui keegi ei eksi kõnes, siis on ta täiuslik ja suudab ohjeldada ka kogu ihu.

³Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

³Kui me paneme aga hobusele suitsed suhu, et ta oleks meile kuulekas, siis me juhime kogu hobust.

⁴Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

⁴Ennäe, ka suuri ja rajutuulte aetud laevu juhitakse väikese tüüriga sinna, kuhu tüürimees tahab.

⁵Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

⁵Nõnda on ka keel väike ihuliige, aga kiitleb suurte asjade üle. Ennäe kui väike tuli süütab suure metsa!

⁶And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

⁶Ka keel on tuli. Keel, see ebaõigluse maailm, on seatud meie ihuliikmete hulka nii, et see rüvetab kogu ihu ja süütab põlema eluratta, nagu ta ise on süüdatud põrgust.

⁷For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

⁷Jah, igasuguste loomade ja lindude, roomajate ja mereelajate loomust suudab taltsutada ja ongi taltsutanud inimese loomus,

⁸But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

⁸aga ükski inimene ei suuda taltsutada keelt, seda kärsitut pahategijat, mis on tulvil surmavat mürki.

⁹Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

⁹Sellesamaga me õnnistame Issandat ja Isa, ja sellesamaga me neame inimesi, kes on sündinud Jumala sarnasteks.

¹⁰Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

¹⁰Ühest ja samast suust tuleb õnnistamine ja needmine. Nii ei tohi olla, mu vennad!

¹¹Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

¹¹Kas allikast keeb ühest ja samast soonest magedat ja kibedat vett?!

¹²Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

¹²Mu vennad, ega viigipuu saa kanda õlimarju ega viinapuu viigimarju?! Nii ei saa ka soolase vee allikas anda magedat vett.

¹³Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

¹³Kes teie seas on tark ja arusaaja? Las ta näitab hea käitumisega oma tegusid tarkuse tasaduses.

¹⁴But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

¹⁴Kui teie südames on aga kibedat kadedust ja riiakust, siis ärge hoobelge ega valetage tõe vastu!

¹⁵This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

¹⁵See pole ülalt tulev tarkus, vaid maine, hingelik, deemonlik.

¹⁶For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

¹⁶Sest kus on kadedust ja riiakust, seal on kärsitust ja igasuguseid halbu tegusid.

¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹⁷Aga ülalt pärinev tarkus on esmalt puhas, siis rahumeelne, leebe, kuulekas, tulvil halastust ja häid vilju, erapooletu, teeskluseta.

¹⁸And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

¹⁸Rahutegijaile külvatakse rahus õiguse vilja.
