1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1Rakkaat ystävät, älkää uskoko kaikkia henkiä. Koetelkaa ne, tutkikaa, ovatko ne Jumalasta, sillä maailmassa on liikkeellä monia vääriä profeettoja.
2Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
2Tästä te tunnette Jumalan Hengen: jokainen henki, joka tunnustaa Jeesuksen Kristuksen ihmiseksi, lihaan tulleeksi, on Jumalasta.
3And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
3Yksikään henki, joka kieltää Jeesuksen, ei ole Jumalasta. Sellainen henki on Antikristuksen henki, jonka te olette kuulleet olevan tulossa ja joka jo on maailmassa.
4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
4Te, lapseni, olette Jumalasta, ja te olette voittaneet nuo väärät profeetat, sillä se, joka on teissä, on suurempi kuin se, joka on maailmassa.
5They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
5He ovat maailmasta. Maailmasta on se, mitä he puhuvat, ja maailma kuuntelee heitä.
6We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
6Me olemme Jumalasta. Joka tuntee Jumalan, kuuntelee meitä, mutta joka ei ole Jumalasta, se ei meitä kuuntele. Tästä me tunnemme totuuden hengen ja eksytyksen hengen.
7Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
7Rakkaat ystävät, rakastakaamme toisiamme, sillä rakkaus on Jumalasta. Jokainen, joka rakastaa, on syntynyt Jumalasta ja tuntee Jumalan.
8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
8Joka ei rakasta, ei ole oppinut tuntemaan Jumalaa, sillä Jumala on rakkaus.
9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
9Juuri siinä Jumalan rakkaus ilmestyi meidän keskuuteemme, että hän lähetti ainoan Poikansa maailmaan, antamaan meille elämän.
10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
10Siinä on rakkaus -- ei siinä, että me olemme rakastaneet Jumalaa, vaan siinä, että hän on rakastanut meitä ja lähettänyt Poikansa meidän syntiemme sovitukseksi.
11Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
11Rakkaat ystävät! Kun Jumala on meitä näin rakastanut, tulee meidänkin rakastaa toisiamme.
12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
12Jumalaa ei kukaan ole koskaan nähnyt. Mutta jos me rakastamme toisiamme, Jumala pysyy meissä ja hänen rakkautensa on saavuttanut meissä päämääränsä.
13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
13Me pysymme hänessä ja hän pysyy meissä; tämän me tiedämme siitä, että hän on antanut meille Henkeään.
14And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
14Me olemme nähneet, että Isä on lähettänyt Poikansa maailmaan pelastajaksi, ja siitä me todistamme.
15Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
15Joka tunnustaa Jeesuksen Jumalan Pojaksi, hänessä Jumala pysyy, ja hän pysyy Jumalassa.
16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
16Me olemme oppineet tuntemaan Jumalan rakkauden kaikkia meitä kohtaan ja uskomme siihen. Jumala on rakkaus. Se, joka pysyy rakkaudessa, pysyy Jumalassa, ja Jumala pysyy hänessä.
17Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
17Jumalan rakkaus on saavuttanut meissä täyttymyksensä, kun me tuomion päivänä astumme rohkeasti esiin. Sellainen kuin Jeesus on, sellaisia olemme mekin tässä maailmassa. Pelkoa ei rakkaudessa ole,
18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
18vaan täydellinen rakkaus karkottaa pelon. Pelossahan on jo rangaistusta; se, joka pelkää, ei ole tullut täydelliseksi rakkaudessa.
19We love him, because he first loved us.
19Me rakastamme, koska Jumala on ensin rakastanut meitä.
20If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
20Jos joku sanoo rakastavansa Jumalaa mutta vihaa veljeään, hän valehtelee. Sillä se, joka ei rakasta veljeään, jonka on nähnyt, ei voi rakastaa Jumalaa, jota ei ole nähnyt.
21And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
21Tämän käskyn me olemmekin häneltä saaneet: joka rakastaa Jumalaa, rakastakoon myös veljeään.
