¹Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.

¹Neljätoista vuotta myöhemmin menin uudelleen Jerusalemiin Barnabaksen kanssa ja otin mukaan myös Tituksen.

²And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

²Menin sinne kokemani ilmestyksen johdosta. Tein siellä selkoa evankeliumista, jota julistan kansojen keskuudessa; puhuin yksityisesti seurakunnan arvohenkilöille. Tahdoin varmistautua siitä, ettei kaikki vaivannäköni menisi hukkaan.

³But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

³Ei edes seuralaistani Titusta, joka on kreikkalainen, pakotettu ympärileikkauttamaan itseään.

⁴And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

⁴Tosin joukkoomme oli tullut eräitä valeveljiä urkkimaan, millaista on se vapaus, jonka me olemme Kristukselta Jeesukselta saaneet. Heidän tarkoituksenaan oli saattaa meidät lain orjuuteen.

⁵To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

⁵Mutta me emme hetkeksikään antaneet heille periksi, jotta evankeliumin totuus säilyisi teille puhtaana.

⁶But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

⁶Ne taas, joita siellä pidettiin arvossa -- mitä he itse asiassa olivat, on minusta yhdentekevää, sillä Jumala ei tee eroa ihmisten välillä -- nämä arvohenkilöt eivät vaatineet minulta mitään enempää.

⁷But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

⁷He päinvastoin näkivät, että minun tehtäväkseni oli annettu evankeliumin julistaminen ympärileikkaamattomille niin kuin Pietarin tehtäväksi sen julistaminen ympärileikatuille.

⁸(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)

⁸Sillä hän, joka on antanut Pietarille voiman toimia juutalaisten apostolina, on antanut minulle voiman toimia muiden kansojen keskuudessa.

⁹And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

⁹Kun Jaakob, Keefas ja Johannes, joita pidettiin seurakunnan pylväinä, käsittivät, minkä tehtävän Jumala oli minulle armossaan antanut, he ojensivat minulle ja Barnabakselle kätensä yhteistyön merkiksi: meidän oli määrä mennä vieraiden kansojen, heidän taas juutalaisten keskuuteen.

¹⁰Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

¹⁰Heidän köyhiään meidän vain tuli muistaa, ja niin minä olen ahkerasti tehnytkin.

¹¹But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

¹¹Kun Keefas sitten tuli Antiokiaan, nousin vastustamaan häntä julkisesti, koska hän oli menetellyt väärin.

¹²For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

¹²Aikaisemmin hän oli ottanut osaa yhteisiin aterioihin pakanuudesta kääntyneiden kanssa. Mutta kun sinne oli tullut Jaakobin luota muutamia miehiä, hän jäi pois ja eristäytyi kääntyneistä, koska pelkäsi niitä, jotka vaativat ympärileikkausta.

¹³And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

¹³Samalla tavoin alkoivat teeskennellä myös muut juutalaiset, ja jopa Barnabas seurasi heidän esimerkkiään.

¹⁴But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

¹⁴Mutta kun minä näin heidän poikkeavan evankeliumin totuuden tieltä, sanoin Keefakselle kaikkien kuullen: "Jos sinä juutalaisena voit luopua juutalaisten tavoista ja elää pakanoiden lailla, miksi pakotat pakanoita elämään niin kuin juutalaiset?"

¹⁵We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

¹⁵Me olemme syntyperältämme juutalaisia, emme syntisiä pakanoita.

¹⁶Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

¹⁶Kun kuitenkin tiedämme, ettei ihminen tule vanhurskaaksi tekemällä lain vaatimia tekoja vaan uskomalla Jeesukseen Kristukseen, olemme mekin uskoneet Jeesukseen Kristukseen, jotta tulisimme vanhurskaiksi häneen uskomalla emmekä tekemällä lain vaatimia tekoja. Eihän kukaan ihminen tule vanhurskaaksi tekemällä mitä laki vaatii.

¹⁷But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

¹⁷Mutta jos meidätkin, jotka tahdomme tulla vanhurskaiksi Kristuksessa, havaitaan syntisiksi, onko Kristus siis synnin palveluksessa? Ei toki!

¹⁸For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

¹⁸Vasta jos alan uudelleen rakentaa sitä minkä olen hajottanut, osoitan olevani lainrikkoja.

¹⁹For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

¹⁹Lain vaikutuksesta minä kuolin, mutta kuolin vapaaksi laista elääkseni Jumalalle. Minut on Kristuksen kanssa ristiinnaulittu.

²⁰I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

²⁰Enää en elä minä, vaan Kristus elää minussa. Sen elämän, jota tässä ruumiissani vielä elän, elän uskoen Jumalan Poikaan, joka rakasti minua ja antoi henkensä puolestani.

²¹I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

²¹Minä en tee tyhjäksi Jumalan armoa; jos näet vanhurskaus saadaan lakia noudattamalla, silloin Kristus on kuollut turhaan.
