¹Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

¹Olkaamme siis varuillamme. Jumalan lupaus, että pääsemme hänen lepopaikkaansa, on vielä täyttymättä, eikä yksikään teistä saa jäädä taipaleelle.

²For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

²Mehän olemme kuulleet hyvän sanoman aivan niin kuin nuo entisajan ihmiset. Heille ei kuitenkaan ollut mitään hyötyä sanasta, jonka he kuulivat, koska he eivät sitä uskoneet eikä se näin sulautunut heihin.

³For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

³Sen sijaan me, jotka uskoimme, pääsemme perille luvattuun levon maahan. Jumala on siis sanonut: -- Ja niin minä vihassani vannoin: "Ikinä he eivät pääse minun lepopaikkaani." Näin hän sanoi, vaikka hänen työnsä ovat olleet valmiina maailman luomisesta asti.

⁴For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

⁴Kirjoituksissahan on seitsemännestä päivästä sanottu: "Seitsemäntenä päivänä Jumala lepäsi kaikesta työstään."

⁵And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

⁵Mutta tuossa toisessa kohdassa sanotaan: "Ikinä he eivät pääse minun lepopaikkaani."

⁶Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

⁶Koska siis on varmaa, että jotkut pääsevät sinne, ja koska ne, jotka muinoin kuulivat hyvän sanoman, eivät niskoittelunsa vuoksi sinne päässeet,

⁷Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

⁷Jumala on asettanut uuden määräpäivän, "tämän päivän". Hänhän on paljon myöhemmin Daavidin suulla lausunut edellä mainitut sanat: -- Jos te tänä päivänä kuulette hänen äänensä, älkää paaduttako sydäntänne.

⁸For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

⁸Jos jo Joosua olisi vienyt kansan levon maahan, ei Jumala puhuisi toisesta, myöhemmin tulevasta päivästä.

⁹There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

⁹Jumalan kansalla on siis yhä sapattijuhla edessään.

¹⁰For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

¹⁰Se, joka pääsee levon maahan, saa levätä kaikkien töidensä jälkeen niin kuin Jumalakin työnsä tehtyään.

¹¹Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

¹¹Pyrkikäämme siis kaikin voimin tuohon lepoon, ettei yksikään lankeaisi seuraamaan noiden niskoittelijoiden esimerkkiä ja sen vuoksi jäisi taipaleelle.

¹²For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

¹²Jumalan sana on elävä ja väkevä. Se on terävämpi kuin mikään kaksiteräinen miekka, se iskee syvään ja viiltää halki sielun ja hengen, nivelet ja luiden ytimet, se paljastaa sisimmät aikeemme ja ajatuksemme.

¹³Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹³Jumalalta ei voi salata mitään. Kaikki, mikä on luotu, on avointa ja alastonta hänelle, jolle meidän on tehtävä tili.

¹⁴Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

¹⁴Koska meillä siis on suuri ylipappi, joka on kulkenut läpi taivaiden, Jeesus, Jumalan Poika, pysykäämme tässä tunnustuksessa.

¹⁵For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

¹⁵Meidän ylipappimmehan jos kukaan kykenee ymmärtämään vajavuuksiamme, sillä häntä on koeteltu kaikessa samalla tavoin kuin meitäkin koetellaan; hän vain ei langennut syntiin.

¹⁶Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

¹⁶Astukaamme sen tähden rohkeasti armon valtaistuimen eteen, jotta saisimme armoa ja laupeutta, löytäisimme avun silloin kun sitä tarvitsemme.
