¹My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

¹Veljeni, te jotka uskotte meidän Herraamme Jeesukseen Kristukseen, kirkkauden Herraan, älkää erotelko ihmisiä.

²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

²Jos teidän kokoukseenne tulee mies, jolla on kultasormus sormessaan ja hieno puku yllään, sekä samalla kertaa köyhä nuhruisissa vaatteissaan,

³And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

³niin ettekö vain osoitakin huomiotanne tuolle hienosti pukeutuneelle ja sano hänelle: "Istu tähän, tässä on hyvä paikka"? Köyhälle te sen sijaan sanotte: "Seiso sinä tuossa", tai: "Istu tähän lattialle jalkojeni viereen."

⁴Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

⁴Ettekö te silloin syyllisty erotteluun omassa keskuudessanne? Eikö teistä ole tullut tuomareita, jotka tuomitsevat väärin perustein?

⁵Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

⁵Kuulkaa, rakkaat veljeni! Onhan Jumala valinnut juuri maailman silmissä köyhät olemaan uskossa rikkaat ja perimään valtakunnan, jonka Jumala on luvannut häntä rakastaville.

⁶But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

⁶Mutta te häpäisette köyhän. Eivätkö juuri rikkaat sorra teitä ja raahaa teitä oikeuden eteen?

⁷Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

⁷Eivätkö juuri he herjaa sitä jaloa nimeä, joka on lausuttu teidän ylitsenne?

⁸If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

⁸Jos te noudatatte lain kuningaskäskyä niin kuin se Raamatussa on: "Rakasta lähimmäistäsi niin kuin itseäsi", te teette oikein.

⁹But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

⁹Mutta jos te erottelette ihmisiä, te teette syntiä, ja laki osoittaa teidät rikkojiksi.

¹⁰For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

¹⁰Sillä se, joka muuten kaikessa noudattaa lakia mutta rikkoo sitä yhdessä kohdassa, on syypää kaikilta kohdin.

¹¹For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

¹¹Hän, joka sanoi: "Älä tee aviorikosta", sanoi myös: "Älä tapa." Vaikka siis et teekään aviorikosta, olet lainrikkoja, jos tapat.

¹²So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

¹²Vapauden lain mukaan teidät tuomitaan; pitäkää se mielessänne, mitä puhutte tai teettekin.

¹³For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

¹³Joka ei toista armahda, saa itse armottoman tuomion, mutta joka armahtaa, saa tuomiosta riemuvoiton.

¹⁴What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

¹⁴Veljet, mitä hyötyä siitä on, jos joku sanoo uskovansa mutta häneltä puuttuvat teot? Ei kai usko silloin voi pelastaa häntä?

¹⁵If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

¹⁵Jos veljenne tai sisarenne ovat vailla vaatteita ja jokapäiväistä ravintoa,

¹⁶And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

¹⁶niin turha teidän on sanoa: "Menkää rauhassa, pitäkää itsenne lämpimänä ja syökää hyvin", jos ette anna heille mitä he elääkseen tarvitsevat.

¹⁷Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

¹⁷Näin on uskonkin laita. Yksinään, ilman tekoja, se on kuollut.

¹⁸Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

¹⁸Ehkä joku nyt sanoo: "Sinulla on usko, minulla teot." Näytä sinä minulle uskosi ilman tekoja, minä kyllä näytän sinulle uskon teoillani.

¹⁹Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

¹⁹Sinä uskot, että Jumala on yksi ainoa. Oikein teet -- pahat hengetkin uskovat sen ja vapisevat.

²⁰But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

²⁰Mutta etkö sinä tyhjänpäiväinen ihminen tahdo tietää, että ilman tekoja usko on hyödytön?

²¹Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

²¹Eikö meidän isämme Abraham osoittautunut vanhurskaaksi tekojensa perusteella, kun hän vei poikansa Iisakin uhrialttarille?

²²Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

²²Huomaat, että usko vaikutti yhdessä hänen tekojensa kanssa, teoissa usko tuli todeksi.

²³And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

²³Ja niin täyttyi Raamatun sana: "Abraham uskoi Jumalan lupaukseen, ja Jumala katsoi hänet vanhurskaaksi", ja hän sai nimen Jumalan ystävä.

²⁴Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

²⁴Näette siis, että ihminen osoittautuu vanhurskaaksi tekojen, ei yksistään uskon perusteella.

²⁵Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

²⁵Juuri tekojensa ansiosta portto Rahabkin osoittautui vanhurskaaksi, kun otti sanansaattajat luokseen ja auttoi heidät pois toista tietä.

²⁶For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

²⁶Niin kuin ruumis ilman henkeä on kuollut, niin on uskokin kuollut ilman tekoja.
