1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
1Veljeni, kovin monien teistä ei pidä ryhtyä opettajiksi, sillä te tiedätte, että meidät opettajat tullaan tuomitsemaan muita ankarammin.
2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
2Kaikkihan me hairahdumme monin tavoin. Täydellinen on se, joka ei hairahdu puheissaan: hän kykenee hallitsemaan koko ruumiinsa.
3Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
3Jos panemme suitset hevosen suuhun, me saamme sen tottelemaan itseämme ja voimme ohjata koko hevosta.
4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
4Entä laivat: vaikka ne ovat isoja ja rajut tuulet heittelevät niitä, pienen pieni peräsin ohjaa laivan minne peränpitäjä haluaa.
5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
5Samoin kieli on pieni jäsen, mutta se voi kerskua suurilla asioilla. Pieni tuli sytyttää palamaan suuren metsän!
6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
6Ja kielikin on tuli; meidän jäsentemme joukossa se on vääryyden maailma. Se saastuttaa koko ruumiin ja sytyttää tuleen elämän pyörän, itse liekehtien helvetin tulta.
7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
7Kaikki eläimet voi ihminen kesyttää ja onkin kesyttänyt, nelijalkaiset, linnut, matelijat ja meren eläimet,
8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
8mutta kieltä ei yksikään ihminen pysty kesyttämään. Se on hillitön ja paha, täynnä tappavaa myrkkyä.
9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
9Kielellä me ylistämme Herraa ja Isää, ja sillä me myös kiroamme ihmisiä, Jumalan kuvaksi luotuja.
10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
10Kiitos ja kirous lähtevät samasta suusta. Tämä ei käy, veljeni!
11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
11Eihän samasta lähteensilmästä pulppua makeaa ja karvasta vettä.
12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
12Ei viikunapuussa kasva oliiveja eikä viiniköynnöksessä viikunoita, vai mitä, veljeni? Samoin ei suolaisesta lähteestä juokse makeaa vettä.
13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
13Kuka teistä on viisas ja ymmärtäväinen? Esittäköön hän osoitukseksi hyvästä vaelluksesta tekonsa, sävyisästi, niin kuin viisas tekee.
14But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
14Mutta jos teidän sydäntänne hallitsee katkera kateus ja riidanhalu, älkää vastoin totuutta kerskuko kuvitellulla viisaudellanne.
15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
15Sellainen ei ole ylhäältä tulevaa viisautta, vaan maallista, ihmisistä tulevaa, pahojen henkien viisautta.
16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
16Sillä siellä, missä kateus ja riidanhalu vallitsevat, on myös hillittömyyttä ja kaikenlaista pahaa.
17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
17Mutta ylhäältä tuleva viisaus on puhdasta ja pyhää, ja niin se myös rakentaa rauhaa, se on lempeää ja sopuisaa, täynnä armahtavaisuutta ja hyviä hedelmiä, se on tasapuolista ja teeskentelemätöntä.
18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
18Vanhurskauden siemen kylvetään rauhan tekoina, ja se tuottaa hedelmän niille, jotka rauhaa rakentavat.
