¹Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

¹Eräänä päivänä Jumalan pojat tulivat taas koolle ja asettuivat Herran eteen. Myös Saatana oli heidän joukossaan.

²And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

²Herra kysyi Saatanalta: "Mistä sinä tulet?" Saatana vastasi: "Olen kuljeksinut pitkin ja poikin maita mantereita."

³And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

³Herra kysyi: "Oletko pannut merkille palvelijani Jobin? Ei ole maan päällä toista hänen kaltaistaan, niin vilpitöntä ja nuhteetonta ja jumalaapelkäävää, ei ketään, joka niin karttaisi kaikkea pahaa. Yhä vain hän on pysynyt nuhteettomana, vaikka sinä olet yllyttänyt minut syöksemään onnettomuuteen hänet, viattoman miehen."

⁴And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

⁴Saatana vastasi Herralle: "Hyvän kaupan Job on tehnyt: pelasti sentään oman nahkansa!

⁵But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

⁵Mutta ojennapa kätesi ja koske hänen lihaansa ja luihinsa. Saat nähdä, että hän kiroaa sinua vasten kasvoja!"

⁶And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

⁶Herra sanoi Saatanalle: "Hyvä on! Tee hänelle mitä haluat, mutta henkeä et saa häneltä viedä!"

⁷So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

⁷Niin Saatana lähti pois Herran edestä. Hän meni ja runteli Jobia märkivillä paiseilla. Niitä nousi kaikkialle, päästä jalkoihin.

⁸And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

⁸Job kävi jätekasalle istumaan ja kaapi ruumistaan ruukunpalalla.

⁹Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

⁹Hänen vaimonsa sanoi hänelle: "Vieläkö sinä pidät kiinni hurskaudestasi? Kiroa jo Jumalaa ja kuole pois!"

¹⁰But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

¹⁰Job vastasi: "Hullun puhetta, vaimo. Kun otamme Jumalan kädestä hyvän, totta kai meidän on otettava myös paha." Kaiken tämän keskellä Job ei sanallakaan kapinoinut Herraa vastaan.

¹¹Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹¹Jobilla oli kolme ystävää: temanilainen Elifas, suahilainen Bildad ja naamalainen Sofar. Kun he saivat kuulla onnettomuudesta, joka oli kohdannut Jobia, he kävivät tapaamassa toisiaan ja päättivät mennä hänen luokseen osoittamaan hänelle myötätuntoa ja lohduttamaan häntä.

¹²And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

¹²Jo kaukaa he näkivät hänet, mutta he eivät tunteneet häntä. Lähemmäs ehdittyään he alkoivat ääneen itkeä, repäisivät viittansa ja heittivät ilmaan hiekkaa, niin että se putosi heidän hiuksilleen.

¹³So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹³He istuutuivat maahan hänen viereensä ja istuivat siinä seitsemän päivää ja seitsemän yötä. Kukaan heistä ei puhunut Jobille mitään, sillä he näkivät, miten kauhea hänen tuskansa oli.
