¹And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

¹Tien sivussa Jeesus näki miehen, joka oli syntymästään saakka ollut sokea.

²And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

²Opetuslapset kysyivät häneltä: "Rabbi, kuka on tehnyt sen synnin, jonka vuoksi hän on syntynyt sokeana? Hän itsekö vai hänen vanhempansa?"

³Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

³Jeesus vastasi: "Ei hän eivätkä hänen vanhempansa. Niin on tapahtunut, jotta Jumalan teot tulisivat hänessä julki.

⁴I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

⁴Nyt, kun vielä on päivä, meidän on tehtävä niitä tekoja, joita lähettäjäni meiltä odottaa. Tulee yö, eikä silloin kukaan kykene tekemään työtä.

⁵As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

⁵Niin kauan kuin olen maailmassa, minä olen maailman valo."

⁶When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

⁶Näin sanottuaan Jeesus sylkäisi maahan, teki syljestä tahnaa, siveli sitä miehen silmiin

⁷And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

⁷ja sanoi: "Mene Siloan altaalle ja peseydy." -- Altaan nimi merkitsee: lähetetty. -- Mies meni, peseytyi ja palasi näkevänä.

⁸The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

⁸Miehen naapurit ja muutkin, jotka ennen olivat nähneet hänet ja tiesivät hänet kerjäläiseksi, ihmettelivät: "Eikö tämä ole se, joka istui kerjäämässä?"

⁹Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

⁹Toiset sanoivat: "Sama mies", toiset taas sanoivat: "Ei ole, samannäköinen vain." Mutta hän sanoi itse: "Kyllä se olen minä."

¹⁰Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

¹⁰He kysyivät häneltä: "Kuinka olet saanut näkösi?"

¹¹He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

¹¹Hän vastasi: "Se mies, jonka nimi on Jeesus, teki tahnaa, siveli sitä silmiini ja sanoi: 'Mene Siloan altaalle ja peseydy.' Minä menin ja peseydyin, ja silloin sain näköni."

¹²Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

¹²"Missä se mies on?" he kysyivät häneltä, mutta hän vastasi: "En tiedä."

¹³They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

¹³Mies, joka oli ollut sokea, vietiin fariseusten luo.

¹⁴And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

¹⁴Oli sapatti, kun Jeesus teki tahnan ja avasi miehen silmät.

¹⁵Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

¹⁵Myös fariseukset kysyivät mieheltä, kuinka hän oli saanut näkönsä, ja mies kertoi: "Hän pani tahnaa silmilleni, sitten kävin pesulla, ja nyt minä näen."

¹⁶Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

¹⁶Silloin jotkut fariseuksista sanoivat: "Ei hän voi olla Jumalan mies, koska hän ei noudata sapattikäskyä." Toiset taas sanoivat: "Voisiko syntinen ihminen tehdä sellaisia ihmeitä?" Tästä syntyi kiistaa,

¹⁷They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

¹⁷ja siksi he kysyivät taas sokealta: "Mitä mieltä sinä itse olet hänestä? Sinunhan silmäsi hän avasi." Mies vastasi: "Hän on profeetta."

¹⁸But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

¹⁸Juutalaiset eivät uskoneet, että mies oli ollut sokea ja saanut näkönsä, ennen kuin kutsuivat hänen vanhempansa paikalle.

¹⁹And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

¹⁹He kysyivät vanhemmilta: "Onko tämä teidän poikanne? Väitättekö te hänen syntyneen sokeana? Kuinka sitten on mahdollista, että hän nyt näkee?"

²⁰His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

²⁰Vanhemmat vastasivat: "Hän on meidän poikamme, ja hän on syntynyt sokeana, sen me tiedämme.

²¹But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

²¹Mutta sitä emme tiedä, kuinka hän nyt voi nähdä, emmekä sitä, kuka hänen silmänsä on avannut. Kysykää häneltä itseltään, hän on täysi- ikäinen ja voi vastata itse."

²²These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

²²He sanoivat näin, koska pelkäsivät juutalaisia. Juutalaiset olivat näet jo päättäneet erottaa synagogasta jokaisen, joka tunnustaisi Jeesuksen Messiaaksi.

²³Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

²³Tästä syystä vanhemmat sanoivat: "Hän on täysi-ikäinen, kysykää häneltä."

²⁴Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

²⁴Mies, joka oli ollut sokea, kutsuttiin nyt uudestaan kuultavaksi. Fariseukset sanoivat hänelle: "Anna kunnia Jumalalle! Me tiedämme, että se mies on syntinen."

²⁵He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

²⁵Mies vastasi: "Onko hän syntinen, sitä en tiedä. Mutta sen tiedän, että minä, joka olin sokea, nyt näen."

²⁶Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

²⁶He kyselivät: "Mitä hän sinulle teki? Millä tavoin hän avasi silmäsi?"

²⁷He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

²⁷Mies vastasi: "Johan minä sen teille sanoin, te vain ette kuunnelleet. Miksi te taas tahdotte sen kuulla? Tekeekö teidänkin mieli hänen opetuslapsikseen?"

²⁸Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.

²⁸He vastasivat hänelle pilkallisesti: "Sinä hänen opetuslapsensa olet, me olemme Mooseksen opetuslapsia.

²⁹We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

²⁹Me tiedämme, että Jumala puhui Moosekselle, mutta mistä tuo mies on peräisin, sitä emme tiedä."

³⁰The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

³⁰"Merkillistä", mies vastasi, "että te ette tiedä, mistä hän on -- ja kuitenkin hän on antanut minulle näköni.

³¹Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

³¹Kaikkihan me tiedämme, että Jumala ei kuuntele syntisiä, mutta sellaista hän kuulee, joka kunnioittaa häntä ja elää hänen tahtonsa mukaisesti.

³²Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

³²Ikipäivänä ei ole kuultu, että joku olisi avannut sokeana syntyneen silmät.

³³If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

³³Jos hän ei olisi Jumalan mies, hän ei olisi pystynyt sellaiseen."

³⁴They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

³⁴Silloin fariseukset sanoivat: "Sinä olet syntymästäsi syntinen, syntiä täynnä koko mies -- ja sinä rupeat opettamaan meitä!" He ajoivat miehen ulos.

³⁵Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

³⁵Jeesus sai kuulla, että mies oli ajettu ulos, ja tavatessaan tämän hän kysyi: "Uskotko Ihmisen Poikaan?"

³⁶He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

³⁶"Herra, kuka hän on?" mies kysyi. "Sano, jotta voisin uskoa."

³⁷And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

³⁷Jeesus sanoi: "Sinä olet nähnyt hänet. Hän on tässä ja puhuu kanssasi."

³⁸And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

³⁸"Minä uskon, Herra", mies sanoi ja lankesi maahan hänen eteensä.

³⁹And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

³⁹Jeesus sanoi: "Minä olen tullut tähän maailmaan pannakseni toimeen tuomion: sokeat saavat näkönsä ja näkevistä tulee sokeita."

⁴⁰And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

⁴⁰Muutamat fariseukset, jotka olivat siinä lähellä, kysyivät tämän kuullessaan: "Et kai tarkoita, että mekin olemme sokeita?"

⁴¹Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

⁴¹Jeesus vastasi: "Jos olisitte sokeita, teitä ei syytettäisi synnistä, mutta te väitätte näkevänne, ja sen tähden synti pysyy teissä."
