¹I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

¹Kysyn siis: ei kai Jumala ole hylännyt omaa kansaansa? Ei toki! Olenhan minäkin israelilainen, Abrahamin jälkeläinen, Benjaminin heimoa.

²God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,

²Ei Jumala ole hylännyt kansaansa, jonka hän edeltäkäsin on valinnut. Tiedättehän te, mitä kirjoitukset kertovat Eliasta. Hän esittää Jumalalle Israelia vastaan tämän syytöksen:

³Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

³"Herra, he ovat tappaneet sinun profeettasi ja hajottaneet sinun alttarisi. Minä yksin olen enää jäljellä, ja he tavoittelevat minunkin henkeäni."

⁴But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

⁴Mutta minkä vastauksen hän saa Jumalalta? "Minä olen jättänyt itselleni seitsemäntuhatta miestä, jotka eivät ole polvistuneet Baalin edessä."

⁵Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

⁵Samoin on nykyisenäkin aikana olemassa jäännös, jonka Jumala on armossaan valinnut.

⁶And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

⁶Mutta jos valinta kerran perustuu armoon, se ei perustu ihmisen tekoihin -- muutenhan armo ei olisi armo.

⁷What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

⁷Israel ei siis ole saavuttanut sitä, mitä se on tavoitellut; vain valitut ovat sen saaneet. Muut ovat paatuneet,

⁸(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

⁸niin kuin on kirjoitettu: -- Jumala on antanut heille turtuneen hengen, silmät, jotka eivät näe, ja korvat, jotka eivät kuule. Näin on yhä vielä.

⁹And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:

⁹Ja Daavid sanoo: -- Tulkoon heidän pitopöytänsä heille ansaksi ja satimeksi, kompastukoot he siihen ja saakoot rangaistuksensa.

¹⁰Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

¹⁰Hämärtykööt heidän silmänsä niin, etteivät he näe. Paina heidän selkänsä aina kumaraan.

¹¹I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

¹¹Kysyn siis: eivät kai juutalaiset sen vuoksi kompastuneet, että he jäisivät maahan makaamaan? Päinvastoin! Heidän lankeemuksensa on avannut pelastuksen muille kansoille, ja näin juutalaiset ovat saaneet aiheen kadehtia niitä.

¹²Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

¹²Jos heidän lankeemuksensa on koitunut rikkaudeksi maailmalle ja heidän tappionsa rikkaudeksi kansoille, kuinka paljon enemmän saakaan aikaan heidän täysimääräinen voittonsa!

¹³For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

¹⁴If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

¹⁴sillä näin herätän ehkä heimolaisissani kateutta teitä kohtaan ja voin pelastaa joitakuita heistä.

¹⁵For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

¹⁵Jos juutalaisten hylkääminen on avannut maailmalle pääsyn sovintoon, niin mitä tapahtuukaan, kun Jumala ottaa heidät yhteyteensä? Silloin kuolleet heräävät eloon!

¹⁶For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

¹⁶Jos ensimmäinen leipä pyhitetään, on koko leipomus pyhä, ja jos puun juuri on pyhä, ovat myös oksat pyhät.

¹⁷And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

¹⁷Jos jalosta oliivipuusta on katkaistu oksia ja jos sinut, joka olet peräisin villistä oliivipuusta, on oksastettu oikeiden oksien joukkoon niin että olet päässyt osalliseksi puun juurinesteestä,

¹⁸Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

¹⁸älä ylvästele alkuperäisten oksien rinnalla! Mutta jos ylvästelet, muista, ettet sinä kannata juurta vaan juuri kannattaa sinua.

¹⁹Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.

¹⁹Sanot ehkä, että nuo oksat katkaistiin, jotta sinut voitaisiin oksastaa.

²⁰Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

²⁰Se on totta. Ne katkaistiin pois epäuskonsa tähden, mutta sinä pysyt, kun uskot. Älä silti ole ylimielinen, vaan pelkää!

²¹For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

²¹Jos Jumala ei säästänyt luonnollisia oksia, ei hän säästä sinuakaan.

²²Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

²²Katso, kuinka Jumala on sekä lempeä että ankara. Langenneita kohtaan hän on ankara, sinua kohtaan lempeä, jos pysyt kiinni hänen hyvyydessään; muuten sinutkin leikataan pois.

²³And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.

²³Mutta myös nuo toiset oksastetaan uudelleen, elleivät he jää epäuskonsa valtaan, sillä Jumala kykenee liittämään heidät takaisin runkoon.

²⁴For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

²⁴Jos kerran sinut on leikattu irti villistä oliivipuusta, johon luonnonmukaisesti kuuluit, ja vastoin luontoa oksastettu jaloon oliivipuuhun, niin totta kai nämä alkuperäiset oksat voidaan liittää takaisin omaan puuhunsa.

²⁵For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

²⁵Veljet, jotta ette olisi oman viisautenne varassa, teidän tulee tuntea tämä salaisuus: paatumus, joka on kohdannut osaa Israelin kansasta, kestää siihen asti kun muista kansoista koottava määrä on tullut täyteen.

²⁶And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

²⁷For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

²⁸As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father's sakes.

²⁸Evankeliumin torjuessaan he ovat Jumalan vihollisia, teidän tähtenne, mutta valinnan perusteella he ovat Jumalalle rakkaita, isien tähden.

²⁹For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

²⁹Jumala ei peruuta lahjojaan eikä antamaansa kutsua.

³⁰For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:

³⁰Te olitte ennen tottelemattomia Jumalaa kohtaan, mutta noiden toisten tottelemattomuuden vuoksi Jumala on nyt armahtanut teidät.

³¹Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

³¹Samalla tavoin he ovat nyt olleet tottelemattomia, jotta myös heidät armahdettaisiin, kun te olette saaneet armahduksen.

³²For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

³²Jumala on näet tehnyt kaikki tottelemattomuuden vangeiksi, jotta hän voisi antaa kaikille armahduksen.

³³O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

³³Kuinka ääretön onkaan Jumalan rikkaus, kuinka syvä hänen viisautensa ja tietonsa! Kuinka tutkimattomat ovat hänen tuomionsa ja jäljittämättömät hänen tiensä!

³⁴For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

³⁴Kuka voi tuntea Herran ajatukset, kuka pystyy neuvomaan häntä?

³⁵Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

³⁵Kuka on antanut hänelle jotakin, mikä hänen olisi maksettava takaisin?

³⁶For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
