¹Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

¹Strebet nach der Liebe; doch eifert auch nach den Geistesgaben, am meisten aber, daß ihr weissagen könnet!

²For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

²Denn wer in Zungen redet, der redet nicht für Menschen, sondern für Gott; denn niemand vernimmt es, im Geiste aber redet er Geheimnisse.

³But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

³Wer aber weissagt, der redet für Menschen zur Erbauung, zur Ermahnung und zum Trost.

⁴He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

⁴Wer in Zungen redet, erbaut sich selbst; wer aber weissagt, erbaut die Gemeinde.

⁵I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

⁵Ich wünschte, daß ihr alle in Zungen redetet, noch viel mehr aber, daß ihr weissagen könntet. Denn wer weissagt, ist größer, als wer in Zungen redet; es sei denn, daß er es auslege, damit die Gemeinde Erbauung empfange.

⁶Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

⁶Nun aber, ihr Brüder, wenn ich zu euch käme und in Zungen redete, was würde ich euch nützen, wenn ich nicht zu euch redete, sei es durch Offenbarung oder durch Erkenntnis oder durch Weissagung oder durch Lehre?

⁷And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

⁷Ist es doch ebenso mit den leblosen Instrumenten, die einen Laut von sich geben, sei es eine Flöte oder eine Harfe; wenn sie nicht bestimmte Töne geben, wie kann man erkennen, was auf der Flöte oder auf der Harfe gespielt wird?

⁸For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

⁸Ebenso auch, wenn die Posaune einen undeutlichen Ton gibt, wer wird sich zum Kampfe rüsten?

⁹So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

⁹Also auch ihr, wenn ihr durch die Zunge nicht eine verständliche Rede gebet, wie kann man verstehen, was geredet wird? Denn ihr werdet in den Wind reden.

¹⁰There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

¹⁰So viele Arten von Sprachen mögen wohl in der Welt sein, und keine ist ohne Laut.

¹¹Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

¹¹Wenn ich nun den Sinn des Lautes nicht kenne, so werde ich dem Redenden ein Fremder sein und der Redende für mich ein Fremder.

¹²Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

¹²Also auch ihr, da ihr eifrig nach Geistesgaben trachtet, suchet, zur Erbauung der Gemeinde daran Überfluß zu haben!

¹³Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

¹³Darum: wer in Zungen redet, der bete, daß er es auch auslegen kann.

¹⁴For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

¹⁴Denn wenn ich in Zungen bete, so betet zwar mein Geist, aber mein Verstand ist ohne Frucht.

¹⁵What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

¹⁵Wie soll es nun sein? Ich will im Geiste beten, ich will aber auch mit dem Verstande beten; ich will im Geiste lobsingen, ich will aber auch mit dem Verstande lobsingen.

¹⁶Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

¹⁶Sonst, wenn du im Geiste lobpreisest, wie soll der, welcher die Stelle des Unkundigen einnimmt, das Amen sprechen zu deiner Danksagung, da er nicht weiß, was du sagst?

¹⁷For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

¹⁷Du magst wohl schön danksagen, aber der andere wird nicht erbaut.

¹⁸I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

¹⁸Ich danke Gott, daß ich mehr als ihr alle in Zungen rede.

¹⁹Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

¹⁹Aber in der Gemeinde will ich lieber fünf Worte mit meinem Verstande reden, damit ich auch andere unterrichte, als zehntausend Worte in Zungen.

²⁰Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

²⁰Ihr Brüder, werdet nicht Kinder im Verständnis, sondern an Bosheit seid Kinder, am Verständnis aber werdet vollkommen.

²¹In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

²¹Im Gesetz steht geschrieben: «Ich will mit fremden Zungen und mit fremden Lippen zu diesem Volke reden, aber auch so werden sie mich nicht hören, spricht der Herr.»

²²Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

²²Darum sind die Zungen zum Zeichen nicht für die Gläubigen, sondern für die Ungläubigen; die Weissagung aber ist nicht für die Ungläubigen, sondern für die Gläubigen.

²³If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

²³Wenn nun die ganze Gemeinde am selben Ort zusammenkäme, und alle würden in Zungen reden, und es kämen Unkundige oder Ungläubige herein, würden sie nicht sagen, ihr wäret von Sinnen?

²⁴But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

²⁴Wenn aber alle weissagten, und es käme ein Ungläubiger oder Unkundiger herein, so würde er von allen überführt, von allen erforscht;

²⁵And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

²⁵das Verborgene seines Herzens würde offenbar, und so würde er auf sein Angesicht fallen und Gott anbeten und bekennen, daß Gott wahrhaftig in euch sei.

²⁶How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

²⁶Wie ist es nun, ihr Brüder? Wenn ihr zusammenkommt, so hat jeder von euch etwas: einen Psalm, eine Lehre, eine Offenbarung, eine Zungenrede, eine Auslegung; alles geschehe zur Erbauung!

²⁷If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

²⁷Will jemand in Zungen reden, so seien es je zwei, höchstens drei, und der Reihe nach, und einer lege es aus.

²⁸But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

²⁸Ist aber kein Ausleger da, so schweige er in der Gemeinde; er rede aber für sich selbst und zu Gott.

²⁹Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

²⁹Propheten aber sollen zwei oder drei reden, und die andern sollen es beurteilen.

³⁰If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

³⁰Wenn aber einem andern, der dasitzt, eine Offenbarung zuteil wird, so soll der erste schweigen.

³¹For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

³¹Denn ihr könnet einer nach dem andern alle weissagen, damit alle lernen und alle getröstet werden.

³²And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

³²Und die Geister der Propheten sind den Propheten untertan.

³³For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

³³Denn Gott ist nicht ein Gott der Unordnung, sondern des Friedens.

³⁴Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

³⁴Wie in allen Gemeinden der Heiligen, so sollen die Frauen in den Gemeinden schweigen; denn es ist ihnen nicht gestattet zu reden, sondern sie sollen untertan sein, wie auch das Gesetz sagt.

³⁵And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

³⁵Wollen sie aber etwas lernen, so mögen sie daheim ihre Männer fragen; denn es steht einem Weibe übel an, in der Gemeinde zu reden.

³⁶What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

³⁶Oder ist von euch das Wort Gottes ausgegangen? Oder ist es zu euch allein gekommen?

³⁷If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

³⁷Glaubt jemand ein Prophet oder ein Geistbegabter zu sein, der erkenne, daß das, was ich euch schreibe, des Herrn Gebot ist.

³⁸But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

³⁸Will es aber jemand mißachten, der mißachte es!

³⁹Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

³⁹Also, meine Brüder, strebet nach der Weissagung, und das Reden in Zungen wehret nicht;

⁴⁰Let all things be done decently and in order.

⁴⁰alles aber geschehe mit Anstand und in Ordnung!
