¹After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

¹Darnach fuhr Jesus über das galiläische Meer bei Tiberias.

²And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

²Und es folgte ihm viel Volk nach, weil sie die Zeichen sahen, die er an den Kranken tat.

³And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

³Jesus aber ging auf den Berg und setzte sich daselbst mit seinen Jüngern.

⁴And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

⁴Es war aber das Passah nahe, das Fest der Juden.

⁵When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

⁵Da nun Jesus die Augen erhob und sah, daß eine große Menge zu ihm kam, spricht er zu Philippus: Woher kaufen wir Brot, daß diese essen können?

⁶And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

⁶(Das sagte er aber, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen, denn er selbst wußte wohl, was er tun wollte.)

⁷Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

⁷Philippus antwortete ihm: Für zweihundert Denare Brot reicht nicht hin für sie, daß jeder von ihnen auch nur ein wenig nehme!

⁸One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,

⁸Da spricht einer von seinen Jüngern, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, zu ihm:

⁹There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

⁹Es ist ein Knabe hier, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische; aber was ist das unter so viele?

¹⁰And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

¹⁰Jesus spricht: Machet, daß die Leute sich setzen! Es war aber viel Gras an dem Ort. Da setzten sich die Männer, etwa fünftausend an Zahl.

¹¹And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

¹¹Jesus aber nahm die Brote, sagte Dank und teilte sie den Jüngern aus, die Jünger aber denen, die sich gesetzt hatten; ebenso auch von den Fischen, soviel sie wollten.

¹²When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

¹²Als sie aber gesättigt waren, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übriggebliebenen Brocken, damit nichts umkomme!

¹³Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

¹³Da sammelten sie und füllten zwölf Körbe mit Brocken von den fünf Gerstenbroten, die denen übriggeblieben waren, welche gegessen hatten.

¹⁴Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

¹⁴Als nun die Leute das Zeichen sahen, welches Jesus getan hatte, sprachen sie: Das ist wahrhaftig der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll!

¹⁵When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

¹⁵Da nun Jesus merkte, daß sie kommen würden, um ihn mit Gewalt zum Könige zu machen, entwich er wiederum auf den Berg, er allein.

¹⁶And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

¹⁶Als es aber Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger hinab ans Meer,

¹⁷And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

¹⁷stiegen in das Schiff und fuhren über das Meer nach Kapernaum. Und es war schon finster geworden, und Jesus war noch nicht zu ihnen gekommen.

¹⁸And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

¹⁸Und das Meer ging hoch, da ein starker Wind wehte.

¹⁹So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

¹⁹Als sie nun ungefähr fünfundzwanzig oder dreißig Stadien gerudert hatten, sahen sie Jesus auf dem Meere wandeln und sich Schiffe nähern; und sie fürchteten sich.

²⁰But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

²⁰Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin's, fürchtet euch nicht!

²¹Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

²¹Da wollten sie ihn in das Schiff nehmen, und alsbald war das Schiff am Lande, wohin sie fuhren.

²²The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

²²Am folgenden Tage sah das Volk, das jenseits des Meeres stand, daß kein anderes Schiff daselbst war, als nur das eine, in welches seine Jünger gestiegen waren, und daß Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Schiff gestiegen war, sondern daß seine Jünger allein abgefahren waren.

²³(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

²³Es kamen aber andere Schiffe von Tiberias nahe an den Ort, wo sie das Brot gegessen hatten nach der Danksagung des Herrn.

²⁴When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

²⁴Da nun das Volk sah, daß Jesus nicht dort war, auch nicht seine Jünger, stiegen auch sie in die Schiffe und kamen nach Kapernaum und suchten Jesus.

²⁵And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

²⁵Und als sie ihn jenseits des Meeres fanden, sprachen sie zu ihm: Rabbi, wann bist du hierher gekommen?

²⁶Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

²⁶Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, ihr suchet mich nicht darum, weil ihr Zeichen gesehen, sondern weil ihr von den Broten gegessen habt und satt geworden seid.

²⁷Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

²⁷Wirket nicht die Speise, die vergänglich ist, sondern die Speise, die ins ewige Leben bleibt, welche des Menschen Sohn euch geben wird; denn diesen hat Gott, der Vater, bestätigt!

²⁸Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

²⁸Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was sollen wir tun um die Werke Gottes zu wirken?

²⁹Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

²⁹Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist das Werk Gottes, daß ihr an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat.

³⁰They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

³⁰Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was tust du denn für ein Zeichen, damit wir es sehen und dir glauben? Was wirkst du?

³¹Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

³¹Unsere Väter haben das Manna gegessen in der Wüste, wie geschrieben steht: «Brot vom Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen.»

³²Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

³²Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, nicht Mose hat euch das Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot vom Himmel.

³³For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

³³Denn das Brot Gottes ist derjenige, welcher vom Himmel herabkommt und der Welt Leben gibt.

³⁴Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

³⁴Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Herr, gib uns allezeit dieses Brot!

³⁵And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

³⁵Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens; wer zu mir kommt, den wird nicht hungern; und wer an mich glaubt, den wird nimmermehr dürsten.

³⁶But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

³⁶Aber ich habe es euch gesagt, daß ihr mich gesehen habt und doch nicht glaubet.

³⁷All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

³⁷Alles, was mir der Vater gibt, wird zu mir kommen; und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht hinausstoßen.

³⁸For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

³⁸Denn ich bin vom Himmel herabgekommen, nicht damit ich meinen Willen tue, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.

³⁹And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

³⁹Das ist aber der Wille des Vaters, der mich gesandt hat, daß ich nichts verliere von allem, was er mir gegeben hat, sondern daß ich es auferwecke am letzten Tage.

⁴⁰And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

⁴⁰Denn das ist der Wille meines Vaters, daß jeder, der den Sohn sieht und an ihn glaubt, ewiges Leben habe; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tage.

⁴¹The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

⁴¹Da murrten die Juden über ihn, weil er gesagt hatte: Ich bin das Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist,

⁴²And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

⁴²und sprachen: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, Josephs Sohn, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie spricht er denn: Ich bin vom Himmel herabgekommen?

⁴³Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

⁴³Da antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihnen: Murret nicht untereinander!

⁴⁴No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

⁴⁴Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei denn, daß ihn ziehe der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tage.

⁴⁵It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

⁴⁵Es steht geschrieben in den Propheten: «Sie werden alle von Gott gelehrt sein.» Jeder, der vom Vater gehört und gelernt hat, kommt zu mir.

⁴⁶Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

⁴⁶Nicht, daß jemand den Vater gesehen hätte; nur der, welcher von Gott gekommen ist, der hat den Vater gesehen.

⁴⁷Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

⁴⁷Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, wer an mich glaubt, hat ewiges Leben.

⁴⁸I am that bread of life.

⁴⁸Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.

⁴⁹Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

⁴⁹Eure Väter haben das Manna gegessen in der Wüste und sind gestorben;

⁵⁰This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

⁵⁰dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabkommt, auf daß, wer davon ißt, nicht sterbe.

⁵¹I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

⁵¹Ich bin das lebendige Brot, vom Himmel herabgekommen. Wenn jemand von diesem Brot ißt, wird er in Ewigkeit leben. Das Brot aber, das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch, welches ich geben werde für das Leben der Welt.

⁵²The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

⁵²Da zankten die Juden untereinander und sprachen: Wie kann dieser uns sein Fleisch zu essen geben?

⁵³Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

⁵³Darum sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, wenn ihr nicht das Fleisch des Menschensohnes esset und sein Blut trinket, so habt ihr kein Leben in euch.

⁵⁴Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

⁵⁴Wer mein Fleisch ißt und mein Blut trinkt, der hat ewiges Leben, und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tage.

⁵⁵For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

⁵⁵Denn mein Fleisch ist wahrhaftige Speise, und mein Blut ist wahrhaftiger Trank.

⁵⁶He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

⁵⁶Wer mein Fleisch ißt und mein Blut trinkt, der bleibt in mir und ich in ihm.

⁵⁷As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

⁵⁷Wie mich der lebendige Vater gesandt hat und ich um des Vaters willen lebe, so wird auch der, welcher mich ißt, um meinetwillen leben.

⁵⁸This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

⁵⁸Dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist; nicht wie eure Väter das Manna gegessen haben und gestorben sind; wer dieses Brot ißt, der wird leben in Ewigkeit!

⁵⁹These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

⁵⁹Solches sprach er, als er in der Synagoge zu Kapernaum lehrte.

⁶⁰Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

⁶⁰Viele nun von seinen Jüngern, die solches hörten, sprachen: Das ist eine harte Rede, wer kann sie hören?

⁶¹When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

⁶¹Da aber Jesus bei sich selbst merkte, daß seine Jünger darüber murrten, sprach er zu ihnen: Ist euch das ein Ärgernis?

⁶²What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

⁶²Wie denn, wenn ihr des Menschen Sohn dorthin auffahren sehet, wo er zuvor war?

⁶³It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

⁶³Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht, das Fleisch nützt gar nichts. Die Worte, die ich zu euch geredet habe, sind Geist und sind Leben.

⁶⁴But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

⁶⁴Aber es sind etliche unter euch, die nicht glauben. Denn Jesus wußte von Anfang, wer die seien, die nicht glaubten, und welcher ihn verraten würde.

⁶⁵And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

⁶⁵Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei ihm denn von meinem Vater gegeben!

⁶⁶From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

⁶⁶Aus diesem Anlaß traten viele seiner Jünger zurück und wandelten nicht mehr mit ihm.

⁶⁷Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

⁶⁷Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollt ihr nicht auch weggehen?

⁶⁸Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

⁶⁸Da antwortete ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, zu wem sollen wir gehen? Du hast Worte ewigen Lebens.

⁶⁹And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

⁶⁹Und wir haben geglaubt und erkannt, daß du der Christus, der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes bist!

⁷⁰Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

⁷⁰Jesus antwortete ihnen: Habe ich nicht euch Zwölf erwählt? Und einer von euch ist ein Teufel!

⁷¹He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

⁷¹Er redete aber von Judas, Simons Sohn, dem Ischariot; denn dieser sollte ihn verraten, einer von den Zwölfen.
