¹Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

²And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

²Und am Morgen früh stellte er sich wieder im Tempel ein, und alles Volk kam zu ihm, und er setzte sich und lehrte sie.

³And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

³Da brachten die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer ein Weib zu ihm, die beim Ehebruch ergriffen worden war, stellten sie in die Mitte

⁴They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

⁴und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, dieses Weib ist auf der Tat beim Ehebruch ergriffen worden.

⁵Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

⁵Im Gesetz aber hat uns Mose geboten, solche zu steinigen. Was sagst nun du?

⁶This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

⁶Das sagten sie aber, um ihn zu versuchen, damit sie ihn anklagen könnten. Jesus aber bückte sich nieder und schrieb mit dem Finger auf die Erde.

⁷So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

⁷Als sie nun dabei verharrten, ihn zu fragen, richtete er sich auf und sprach zu ihnen: Wer unter euch ohne Sünde ist, der werfe den ersten Stein auf sie!

⁸And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

⁸Und er bückte sich wiederum nieder und schrieb auf die Erde.

⁹And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

⁹Als sie aber das hörten, gingen sie von ihrem Gewissen gestraft einer nach dem andern hinaus, die Ältesten zuerst; Jesus aber ward allein gelassen, mit dem Weib, das in der Mitte stand.

¹⁰When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

¹⁰Da richtete sich Jesus auf und sprach zu ihr: Weib, wo sind deine Ankläger? Hat dich niemand verdammt?

¹¹She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

¹¹Sie sprach: Herr, niemand! Jesus sprach zu ihr: So verurteile ich dich auch nicht. Gehe hin und sündige hinfort nicht mehr!

¹²Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

¹²Nun redete Jesus wieder zu ihnen und sprach: Ich bin das Licht der Welt. Wer mir nachfolgt, wird nicht in der Finsternis wandeln, sondern er wird das Licht des Lebens haben.

¹³The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

¹³Da sprachen die Pharisäer zu ihm: Du zeugst von dir selbst; dein Zeugnis ist nicht wahr!

¹⁴Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

¹⁴Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Auch wenn ich von mir selbst zeuge, so ist mein Zeugnis wahr, denn ich weiß, woher ich gekommen bin und wohin ich gehe; ihr aber wisset nicht, woher ich komme und wohin ich gehe.

¹⁵Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

¹⁵Ihr richtet nach dem Fleische; ich richte niemand.

¹⁶And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

¹⁶Aber auch wenn ich richte, so ist mein Gericht wahr; denn ich bin nicht allein, sondern ich und der Vater, der mich gesandt hat.

¹⁷It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.

¹⁷Es steht aber auch in eurem Gesetze geschrieben, daß das Zeugnis zweier Menschen wahr sei.

¹⁸I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

¹⁸Ich bin es, der ich von mir selbst zeuge, und es zeugt von mir der Vater, der mich gesandt hat.

¹⁹Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

¹⁹Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist dein Vater? Jesus antwortete: Ihr kennet weder mich noch meinen Vater; wenn ihr mich kenntet, so würdet ihr auch meinen Vater kennen.

²⁰These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

²⁰Diese Worte redete Jesus bei dem Gotteskasten, als er im Tempel lehrte; und niemand griff ihn, denn seine Stunde war noch nicht gekommen.

²¹Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.

²¹Nun sprach Jesus wiederum zu ihnen: Ich gehe fort, und ihr werdet mich suchen und in eurer Sünde sterben. Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen!

²²Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.

²²Da sagten die Juden: Will er sich etwa selbst töten, daß er spricht: Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen?

²³And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

²³Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid von unten her, ich bin von oben her. Ihr seid von dieser Welt, ich bin nicht von dieser Welt.

²⁴I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

²⁴Darum habe ich euch gesagt, daß ihr in euren Sünden sterben werdet; denn wenn ihr nicht glaubet, daß ich es bin, so werdet ihr in euren Sünden sterben.

²⁵Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.

²⁵Da sagten sie zu ihm: Wer bist du? Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Erstens das, was ich euch eben sage!

²⁶I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

²⁶Ich habe vieles über euch zu reden und zu richten; aber der, welcher mich gesandt hat, ist wahrhaftig; und was ich von ihm gehört habe, das rede ich zu der Welt.

²⁷They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

²⁷Sie verstanden aber nicht, daß er vom Vater zu ihnen redete.

²⁸Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

²⁸Darum sprach Jesus: Wenn ihr des Menschen Sohn erhöht haben werdet, dann werdet ihr erkennen, daß ich es bin; und von mir selbst tue ich nichts, sondern wie mich mein Vater gelehrt hat, so rede ich.

²⁹And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

²⁹Und der, welcher mich gesandt hat, ist mit mir; er läßt mich nicht allein, denn ich tue allezeit, was ihm gefällt.

³⁰As he spake these words, many believed on him.

³⁰Als er solches redete, glaubten viele an ihn.

³¹Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

³¹Da sprach Jesus zu den Juden, die an ihn gläubig geworden waren: Wenn ihr in meinem Worte bleibet, so seid ihr wahrhaftig meine Jünger,

³²And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

³²und ihr werdet die Wahrheit erkennen, und die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen!

³³They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

³³Sie antworteten ihm: Wir sind Abrahams Same und sind nie jemandes Knechte gewesen; wie sprichst du denn: Ihr sollt frei werden?

³⁴Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

³⁴Jesus antwortete ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer Sünde tut, ist der Sünde Knecht.

³⁵And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

³⁵Der Knecht aber bleibt nicht ewig im Hause; der Sohn bleibt ewig.

³⁶If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

³⁶Wird euch nun der Sohn frei machen, so seid ihr wirklich frei.

³⁷I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

³⁷Ich weiß, daß ihr Abrahams Same seid; aber ihr suchet mich zu töten, denn mein Wort findet keinen Raum in euch.

³⁸I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

³⁸Ich rede, was ich bei meinem Vater gesehen habe; so tut auch ihr, was ihr von eurem Vater gehört habt.

³⁹They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

³⁹Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Unser Vater ist Abraham! Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Wäret ihr Abrahams Kinder, so tätet ihr Abrahams Werke.

⁴⁰But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

⁴⁰Nun aber suchet ihr mich zu töten, einen Menschen, der euch die Wahrheit gesagt hat, welche ich von Gott gehört habe; das hat Abraham nicht getan.

⁴¹Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

⁴¹Ihr tut die Werke eures Vaters. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wir sind nicht unehelich geboren, wir haben einen Vater, Gott!

⁴²Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

⁴²Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wäre Gott euer Vater, so würdet ihr mich lieben, denn ich bin von Gott ausgegangen und gekommen; denn nicht von mir selbst bin ich gekommen, sondern er hat mich gesandt.

⁴³Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

⁴³Warum versteht ihr meine Rede nicht? Denn ihr könnt ja mein Wort nicht hören!

⁴⁴Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁴⁴Ihr seid von dem Vater, dem Teufel, und was euer Vater begehrt, wollt ihr tun; der war ein Menschenmörder von Anfang an und ist nicht bestanden in der Wahrheit, denn Wahrheit ist nicht in ihm. Wenn er die Lüge redet, so redet er aus seinem Eigenen, denn er ist ein Lügner und der Vater derselben.

⁴⁵And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

⁴⁵Weil aber ich die Wahrheit sage, glaubet ihr mir nicht.

⁴⁶Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

⁴⁶Wer unter euch kann mich einer Sünde zeihen? Wenn ich die Wahrheit rede, warum glaubet ihr mir nicht?

⁴⁷He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

⁴⁷Wer aus Gott ist, der hört die Worte Gottes; darum höret ihr nicht, weil ihr nicht aus Gott seid.

⁴⁸Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

⁴⁸Da antworteten die Juden und sprachen zu ihm: Sagen wir nicht mit Recht, daß du ein Samariter bist und einen Dämon hast?

⁴⁹Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

⁴⁹Jesus antwortete: Ich habe keinen Dämon, sondern ich ehre meinen Vater, und ihr entehret mich.

⁵⁰And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

⁵⁰Ich aber suche nicht meine Ehre; es ist Einer, der sie sucht und der richtet.

⁵¹Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

⁵¹Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, wenn jemand mein Wort bewahrt, so wird er den Tod nicht sehen in Ewigkeit!

⁵²Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.

⁵²Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Jetzt erkennen wir, daß du einen Dämon hast! Abraham ist gestorben und die Propheten, und du sagst: Wenn jemand mein Wort bewahrt, so wird er den Tod nicht schmecken in Ewigkeit.

⁵³Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

⁵³Bist du größer als unser Vater Abraham, welcher gestorben ist? Und die Propheten sind auch gestorben. Was machst du aus dir selbst?

⁵⁴Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

⁵⁴Jesus antwortete: Wenn ich mich selbst ehre, so ist meine Ehre nichts; es ist mein Vater, der mich ehrt, von welchem ihr saget, er sei euer Gott.

⁵⁵Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.

⁵⁵Und doch habt ihr ihn nicht erkannt; ich aber kenne ihn. Und wenn ich sagen würde, ich kenne ihn nicht, so wäre ich ein Lügner, gleich wie ihr. Aber ich kenne ihn und halte sein Wort.

⁵⁶Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

⁵⁶Abraham, euer Vater, frohlockte, daß er meinen Tag sehen sollte. Und er sah ihn und freute sich.

⁵⁷Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

⁵⁷Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Du bist noch nicht fünfzig Jahre alt und hast Abraham gesehen?

⁵⁸Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

⁵⁸Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, ehe Abraham ward, bin ich!

⁵⁹Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

⁵⁹Da hoben sie Steine auf, um sie auf ihn zu werfen. Jesus aber verbarg sich und ging zum Tempel hinaus, mitten durch sie hindurch, und entwich also.
