¹In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

¹Als sich inzwischen das Volk zu Zehntausenden gesammelt hatte, so daß sie einander traten, fing er an, zu seinen Jüngern zu sagen: Zuerst hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer, das heißt, vor der Heuchelei!

²For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

²Nichts aber ist verdeckt, das nicht aufgedeckt werden wird, und nichts verborgen, das nicht bekannt werden wird.

³Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

³Darum wird man alles, was ihr im Finstern redet, am hellen Tage hören, und was ihr in den Kammern ins Ohr saget, wird auf den Dächern gepredigt werden.

⁴And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

⁴Ich sage aber euch, meinen Freunden: Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten und nachher nichts weiteres tun können.

⁵But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

⁵Ich will euch aber zeigen, wen ihr fürchten sollt: Fürchtet den, welcher, nachdem er getötet, auch Macht hat, in die Hölle zu werfen! Ja, ich sage euch, den fürchtet!

⁶Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

⁶Verkauft man nicht fünf Sperlinge um zwei Pfennige? Und nicht ein einziger von ihnen ist vor Gott vergessen.

⁷But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

⁷Aber auch die Haare eures Hauptes sind alle gezählt. Darum fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr seid mehr wert als viele Sperlinge.

⁸Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

⁸Ich sage euch aber: Ein jeglicher, der sich zu mir bekennen wird vor den Menschen, zu dem wird sich auch des Menschen Sohn bekennen vor den Engeln Gottes;

⁹But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

⁹wer mich aber verleugnet hat vor den Menschen, der wird verleugnet werden vor den Engeln Gottes.

¹⁰And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

¹⁰Und einem jeglichen, der ein Wort gegen den Menschensohn reden wird, dem wird vergeben werden; wer aber gegen den heiligen Geist lästert, dem wird nicht vergeben werden.

¹¹And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

¹¹Wenn sie euch aber vor die Synagogen und vor die Fürsten und Obrigkeiten führen, so sorget nicht, wie oder womit ihr euch verteidigen oder was ihr sagen sollt;

¹²For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

¹²denn der heilige Geist wird euch in derselben Stunde lehren, was ihr sagen sollt.

¹³And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

¹³Es sprach aber einer aus dem Volke zu ihm: Meister, sage meinem Bruder, daß er das Erbe mit mir teile!

¹⁴And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

¹⁴Er aber sprach zu ihm: Mensch, wer hat mich zum Richter oder Erbteiler über euch gesetzt?

¹⁵And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

¹⁵Er sagte aber zu ihnen: Sehet zu und hütet euch vor jeglicher Habsucht! Denn niemandes Leben hängt von dem Überfluß ab, den er an Gütern hat.

¹⁶And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

¹⁶Und er sagte ihnen ein Gleichnis und sprach: Eines reichen Mannes Feld hatte viel Frucht getragen.

¹⁷And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

¹⁷Und er dachte bei sich selbst und sprach: Was soll ich tun, da ich keinen Platz habe, wo ich meine Früchte aufspeichern kann?

¹⁸And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

¹⁸Und er sprach: Das will ich tun, ich will meine Scheunen abbrechen und größere bauen und will darin alles, was mir gewachsen ist, und meine Güter aufspeichern

¹⁹And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

¹⁹und will zu meiner Seele sagen: Seele, du hast einen großen Vorrat auf viele Jahre; habe nun Ruhe, iß, trink und sei guten Muts!

²⁰But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

²⁰Aber Gott sprach zu ihm: Du Narr! In dieser Nacht wird man deine Seele von dir fordern; und wem wird gehören, was du bereitet hast?

²¹So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²¹So geht es dem, der für sich selbst Schätze sammelt und nicht reich ist für Gott.

²²And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

²²Und er sprach zu seinen Jüngern: Darum sage ich euch, sorget euch nicht um euer Leben, was ihr essen, noch für den Leib, was ihr anziehen werdet.

²³The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

²³Das Leben ist mehr als die Speise und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung.

²⁴Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

²⁴Betrachtet die Raben! Sie säen nicht und ernten nicht, sie haben weder Speicher noch Scheunen, und Gott nährt sie doch. Wieviel mehr seid ihr wert als die Vögel!

²⁵And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

²⁵Wer aber von euch kann mit seinem Sorgen seiner Länge eine Elle hinzusetzen?

²⁶If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

²⁶Wenn ihr nun das Geringste nicht vermöget, was sorget ihr euch um das übrige?

²⁷Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

²⁷Betrachtet die Lilien, wie sie wachsen! Sie spinnen nicht und weben nicht; ich sage euch aber, daß auch Salomo in aller seiner Herrlichkeit nicht gekleidet gewesen ist wie eine von ihnen!

²⁸If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

²⁸Wenn aber Gott das Gras auf dem Felde, das heute steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, so kleidet, wieviel mehr euch, ihr Kleingläubigen!

²⁹And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

²⁹Fraget auch ihr nicht darnach, was ihr essen oder was ihr trinken sollt und reget euch nicht auf!

³⁰For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

³⁰Denn nach dem allem trachten die Heiden der Welt; euer Vater aber weiß, daß ihr dessen bedürfet.

³¹But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

³¹Trachtet vielmehr nach seinem Reiche, so wird euch solches hinzugelegt werden.

³²Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

³²Fürchte dich nicht, du kleine Herde; denn es hat eurem Vater gefallen, euch das Reich zu geben!

³³Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

³³Verkaufet eure Habe und gebet Almosen! Machet euch Beutel, die nicht veralten, einen Schatz, der nicht ausgeht, im Himmel, wo kein Dieb hinkommt und keine Motte ihr Zerstörungswerk treibt.

³⁴For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

³⁴Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein.

³⁵Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

³⁵Es sollen eure Lenden umgürtet sein und eure Lichter brennend;

³⁶And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

³⁶und seid gleich den Menschen, die ihren Herrn erwarten, wenn er von der Hochzeit aufbrechen wird, damit, wenn er kommt und anklopft, sie ihm alsbald auftun.

³⁷Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

³⁷Selig sind diese Knechte, welche der Herr, wenn er kommt, wachend finden wird! Wahrlich, ich sage euch, er wird sich schürzen und sie zu Tische führen und hinzutreten und sie bedienen.

³⁸And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

³⁸Und wenn er in der zweiten oder in der dritten Nachtwache kommt und sie so findet, selig sind diese Knechte!

³⁹And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

³⁹Das aber merket: Wenn der Hausvater wüßte, zu welcher Stunde der Dieb käme, so würde er wachen und nicht in sein Haus einbrechen lassen.

⁴⁰Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

⁴⁰Darum seid auch ihr bereit! Denn des Menschen Sohn kommt zu einer Stunde, da ihr es nicht meinet.

⁴¹Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?

⁴¹Da sprach Petrus zu ihm: Herr, sagst du dieses Gleichnis für uns oder auch für alle?

⁴²And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?

⁴²Der Herr aber sprach: Wer ist wohl der treue und kluge Haushalter, den der Herr über sein Gesinde setzen wird, damit er ihnen zur rechten Zeit die verordnete Speise gebe?

⁴³Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

⁴³Selig ist jener Knecht, welchen sein Herr, wenn er kommt, bei solchem Tun finden wird.

⁴⁴Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

⁴⁴Wahrlich, ich sage euch, er wird ihn über alle seine Güter setzen.

⁴⁵But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

⁴⁵Wenn aber jener Knecht in seinem Herzen spricht: Mein Herr säumt zu kommen! und anfängt, die Knechte und die Mägde zu schlagen, auch zu essen und zu trinken und sich zu berauschen,

⁴⁶The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

⁴⁶so wird der Herr jenes Knechtes an einem Tage kommen, da er es nicht erwartet, und zu einer Stunde, die er nicht weiß; und wird ihn entzweihauen und ihm sein Teil mit den Ungläubigen geben.

⁴⁷And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

⁴⁷Der Knecht aber, der seines Herrn Willen kannte und sich nicht bereit hielt, auch nicht nach seinem Willen tat, wird viele Streiche erleiden müssen;

⁴⁸But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

⁴⁸wer ihn aber nicht kannte und doch tat, was der Streiche wert ist, der wird wenig leiden müssen. Denn welchem viel gegeben ist, bei dem wird man viel suchen; und wem viel anvertraut ist, von dem wird man desto mehr fordern.

⁴⁹I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

⁴⁹Ich bin gekommen, Feuer auf die Erde zu schleudern, und wie wollte ich, es wäre schon entzündet!

⁵⁰But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

⁵⁰Aber ich habe eine Taufe zu bestehen, und wie drängt es mich, bis sie vollbracht ist!

⁵¹Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

⁵¹Meinet ihr, daß ich gekommen sei, Frieden zu spenden auf Erden? Nein, ich sage euch, sondern eher Zwietracht.

⁵²For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

⁵²Denn von nun an werden fünf in einem Hause entzweit sein, drei wider zwei und zwei wider drei,

⁵³The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

⁵³der Vater wider den Sohn und der Sohn wider den Vater, die Mutter wider die Tochter und die Tochter wider die Mutter, die Schwiegermutter wider ihre Schwiegertochter und die Schwiegertochter wider ihre Schwiegermutter.

⁵⁴And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.

⁵⁴Er sprach aber auch zu dem Volke: Wenn ihr eine Wolke aufsteigen sehet vom Westen her, so saget ihr sofort: Es gibt Regen! Und es geschieht.

⁵⁵And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.

⁵⁵Und wenn der Südwind weht, so saget ihr: Es wird heiß! Und es geschieht.

⁵⁶Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

⁵⁶Ihr Heuchler, das Aussehen der Erde und des Himmels könnt ihr beurteilen; wie kommt es aber, daß ihr diese Zeit nicht zu prüfen versteht?

⁵⁷Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

⁵⁷Warum entscheidet ihr aber nicht von euch selbst aus, was recht ist?

⁵⁸When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.

⁵⁸Denn wenn du mit deinem Widersacher zur Obrigkeit gehst, so gib dir auf dem Wege Mühe, seiner loszuwerden, damit er dich nicht vor den Richter schleppe und der Richter dich dem Schergen überantworte und der Scherge dich ins Gefängnis werfe.

⁵⁹I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

⁵⁹Ich sage dir, du wirst von dannen nicht herauskommen, bis du auch den letzten Heller bezahlt hast!
