¹And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

¹Und es begab sich, als er am Sabbat in das Haus eines Obersten der Pharisäer ging, um zu speisen, da beobachteten sie ihn.

²And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

²Und siehe, da war ein wassersüchtiger Mensch vor ihm.

³And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

³Und Jesus hob an und sprach zu den Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäern: Ist es erlaubt, am Sabbat zu heilen, oder nicht?

⁴And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

⁴Sie aber schwiegen. Da rührte er ihn an und machte ihn gesund und entließ ihn.

⁵And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

⁵Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wer von euch, wenn ihm sein Ochse oder Esel in den Brunnen fällt, wird ihn nicht alsbald herausziehen am Sabbattag?

⁶And they could not answer him again to these things.

⁶Und sie vermochten ihm nichts dagegen zu antworten.

⁷And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.

⁷Er sagte aber zu den Gästen ein Gleichnis, da er bemerkte, wie sie die ersten Plätze auswählten, und sprach zu ihnen:

⁸When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

⁸Wenn du von jemand zur Hochzeit geladen bist, so setze dich nicht obenan, damit nicht etwa ein Vornehmerer als du von ihm geladen sei

⁹And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

⁹und nun der, der dich und ihn geladen hat, komme und zu dir sage: Mache diesem Platz! und du dann beschämt den letzten Platz einnehmen müssest.

¹⁰But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

¹⁰Sondern wenn du geladen bist, so gehe hin und setze dich auf den letzten Platz, damit der, welcher dich eingeladen hat, wenn er kommt, zu dir spreche: Freund, rücke hinauf! Dann wirst du Ehre haben vor denen, die mit dir zu Tische sitzen.

¹¹For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹¹Denn wer sich selbst erhöht, der wird erniedrigt werden; und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, der wird erhöht werden.

¹²Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

¹²Er sagte aber auch zu dem, der ihn geladen hatte: Wenn du ein Mittags oder Abendmahl machst, so lade nicht deine Freunde, noch deine Brüder, noch deine Verwandten, noch reiche Nachbarn ein, damit nicht etwa auch sie dich wieder einladen und dir Vergeltung werde;

¹³But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

¹³sondern wenn du ein Gastmahl machst, so lade Arme, Krüppel, Lahme, Blinde ein,

¹⁴And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

¹⁴so wirst du selig sein; denn weil sie es dir nicht vergelten können, wird es dir vergolten werden in der Auferstehung der Gerechten.

¹⁵And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

¹⁵Als nun einer, der mit ihm zu Tische saß, solches hörte, sprach er zu ihm: Selig ist, wer das Brot ißt im Reiche Gottes!

¹⁶Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

¹⁶Er aber sprach zu ihm: Ein Mensch machte ein großes Mahl und lud viele dazu.

¹⁷And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

¹⁷Und er sandte seinen Knecht zur Stunde des Mahles, den Geladenen zu sagen: Kommet, denn es ist schon alles bereit!

¹⁸And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

¹⁸Und sie fingen alle einstimmig an, sich zu entschuldigen. Der erste sprach zu ihm: Ich habe einen Acker gekauft und bin genötigt, hinauszugehen und ihn zu besehen; ich bitte dich, entschuldige mich!

¹⁹And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

¹⁹Und ein anderer sprach: Ich habe fünf Joch Ochsen gekauft und gehe hin, sie zu prüfen; ich bitte dich, entschuldige mich!

²⁰And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

²⁰Wieder ein anderer sprach: Ich habe eine Frau genommen, darum kann ich nicht kommen!

²¹So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

²¹Und der Knecht kam wieder und berichtete das seinem Herrn. Da wurde der Hausherr zornig und sprach zu seinem Knechte: Geh eilends hinaus auf die Gassen und Plätze der Stadt und führe die Armen und Krüppel und Lahmen und Blinden herein!

²²And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

²²Und der Knecht sprach: Herr, es ist geschehen, wie du befohlen hast; es ist aber noch Raum da!

²³And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

²³Und der Herr sprach zu dem Knecht: Geh hinaus an die Landstraßen und Zäune und nötige sie hereinzukommen, damit mein Haus voll werde!

²⁴For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

²⁴Denn ich sage euch, daß keiner jener Männer, die geladen waren, mein Mahl schmecken wird.

²⁵And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

²⁵Es zog aber eine große Volksmenge mit ihm, und er wandte sich um und sprach zu ihnen:

²⁶If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

²⁶Wenn jemand zu mir kommt und nicht seinen Vater und die Mutter, Weib und Kinder, Brüder und Schwestern haßt, dazu aber auch seine eigene Seele, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.

²⁷And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

²⁷Und wer nicht sein Kreuz trägt und hinter mir her kommt, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.

²⁸For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

²⁸Denn wer von euch, der einen Turm bauen will, setzt sich nicht zuvor hin und berechnet die Kosten, ob er genug habe zur gänzlichen Ausführung,

²⁹Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

²⁹damit nicht etwa, wenn er den Grund gelegt hat und es nicht zu vollenden vermag, alle, die es sehen, anfangen, über ihn zu spotten

³⁰Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

³⁰und zu sagen: Dieser Mensch fing an zu bauen und vermochte es nicht zu vollenden!

³¹Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

³¹Oder welcher König, der auszieht, um mit einem andern König Krieg zu führen, setzt sich nicht zuvor hin und berät, ob er imstande sei, mit zehntausend dem zu begegnen, der mit zwanzigtausend gegen ihn anrückt?

³²Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

³²Wenn aber nicht, so sendet er, solange jener noch fern ist, eine Botschaft und bittet um die Friedensbedingungen.

³³So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

³³So kann auch keiner von euch, der nicht allem entsagt, was er hat, mein Jünger sein.

³⁴Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

³⁴Das Salz ist gut; wenn aber auch das Salz fade wird, womit soll es gewürzt werden?

³⁵It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

³⁵Es ist weder für das Erdreich, noch für den Dünger tauglich; man wirft es hinaus. Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!
