¹And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

¹Es begab sich aber in jenen Tagen, daß ein Befehl ausging vom Kaiser Augustus, daß alle Welt sich sollte schätzen lassen.

²(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

²Diese Schatzung war die erste und geschah, als Kyrenius Landpfleger in Syrien war.

³And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

³Und es zogen alle aus, um sich schätzen zu lassen, ein jeder in seine Stadt.

⁴And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

⁴Es ging aber auch Joseph von Galiläa, aus der Stadt Nazareth, hinauf nach Judäa in die Stadt Davids, welche Bethlehem heißt, weil er aus dem Hause und Geschlechte Davids war,

⁵To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

⁵um sich schätzen zu lassen mit Maria, seiner Verlobten, die schwanger war.

⁶And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

⁶Es begab sich aber, während sie daselbst waren, da erfüllten sich die Tage, daß sie gebären sollte.

⁷And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁷Und sie gebar ihren Sohn, den Erstgeborenen, und wickelte ihn in Windeln und legte ihn in eine Krippe, weil für sie kein Raum war in der Herberge.

⁸And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

⁸Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend auf dem Felde, die bewachten des Nachts ihre Herde.

⁹And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

⁹Und siehe, ein Engel des Herrn trat zu ihnen, und die Klarheit des Herrn umleuchtete sie; und sie fürchteten sich sehr.

¹⁰And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

¹⁰Und der Engel sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! Denn siehe, ich verkündige euch große Freude, die dem ganzen Volk widerfahren soll.

¹¹For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

¹¹Denn euch ist heute ein Retter geboren, welcher ist Christus, der Herr, in der Stadt Davids.

¹²And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

¹²Und das sei für euch das Zeichen: Ihr werdet ein Kindlein finden, in Windeln gewickelt und in einer Krippe liegend.

¹³And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

¹³Und plötzlich war bei dem Engel die Menge der himmlischen Heerscharen, die lobten Gott und sprachen:

¹⁴Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

¹⁴Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe und Friede auf Erden, an den Menschen ein Wohlgefallen!

¹⁵And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

¹⁵Und es begab sich, als die Engel von ihnen gen Himmel fuhren, sprachen die Hirten zueinander: Laßt uns doch bis nach Bethlehem gehen und die Sache sehen, die da geschehen ist, die der Herr uns kundgetan hat!

¹⁶And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

¹⁶Und sie gingen eilends und fanden Maria und Joseph, dazu das Kindlein in der Krippe liegend.

¹⁷And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

¹⁷Nachdem sie es aber gesehen hatten, machten sie das Wort kund, das ihnen von diesem Kinde gesagt worden war.

¹⁸And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

¹⁸Und alle, die es hörten, verwunderten sich über das, was ihnen von den Hirten gesagt wurde.

¹⁹But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

¹⁹Maria aber behielt alle diese Worte und überlegte sie in ihrem Herzen.

²⁰And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

²⁰Und die Hirten kehrten wieder um, priesen und lobten Gott für alles, was sie gehört und gesehen hatten, so wie es ihnen gesagt worden war.

²¹And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

²¹Und als acht Tage vollendet waren, da man das Kind beschneiden mußte, wurde ihm der Name Jesus gegeben, den der Engel genannt hatte, ehe er im Mutterleibe empfangen worden war.

²²And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

²²Und als die Tage ihrer Reinigung nach dem Gesetze Moses vollendet waren, brachten sie ihn nach Jerusalem, um ihn dem Herrn darzustellen,

²³(As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

²³wie im Gesetze des Herrn geschrieben steht: «Alle männliche Erstgeburt soll dem Herrn geheiligt heißen»,

²⁴And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

²⁴und um ein Opfer darzubringen, wie im Gesetze des Herrn geboten ist, ein Paar Turteltauben oder zwei junge Tauben.

²⁵And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

²⁵Und siehe, es war ein Mensch zu Jerusalem, namens Simeon; und dieser Mensch war gerecht und gottesfürchtig und wartete auf den Trost Israels; und heiliger Geist war auf ihm.

²⁶And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

²⁶Und er hatte vom heiligen Geist die Zusage empfangen, daß er den Tod nicht sehen werde, bevor er den Gesalbten des Herrn gesehen.

²⁷And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

²⁷Und er kam auf Antrieb des Geistes in den Tempel. Und als die Eltern das Kindlein Jesus hineinbrachten, um mit ihm zu verfahren nach der Sitte des Gesetzes,

²⁸Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

²⁸da nahm er es auf seine Arme, lobte Gott und sprach:

²⁹Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

²⁹Nun, Herr, entlässest du deinen Diener in Frieden nach deinem Wort!

³⁰For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

³⁰Denn meine Augen haben dein Heil gesehen,

³¹Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

³¹welches du angesichts aller Völker bereitet hast,

³²A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

³²ein Licht zur Erleuchtung der Heiden und zur Verherrlichung deines Volkes Israel!

³³And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

³³Und sein Vater und seine Mutter verwunderten sich über das, was von ihm gesagt wurde.

³⁴And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

³⁴Und Simeon segnete sie und sprach zu Maria, seiner Mutter: Siehe, dieser ist gesetzt zum Fall und zum Auferstehen vieler in Israel und zu einem Zeichen, dem widersprochen wird

³⁵(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

³⁵und dir selbst wird ein Schwert durch die Seele dringen, auf daß aus vielen Herzen die Gedanken offenbar werden.

³⁶And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

³⁶Und es war eine Prophetin Hanna, eine Tochter Phanuels, aus dem Stamm Asser, die war hochbetagt, nachdem sie mit ihrem Manne sieben Jahre gelebt hatte nach ihrer Jungfrauschaft;

³⁷And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

³⁷und sie war eine Witwe von vierundachtzig Jahren; die wich nicht vom Tempel, sondern diente Gott mit Fasten und Beten Tag und Nacht.

³⁸And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

³⁸Auch diese trat zu derselben Stunde hinzu und pries Gott und redete von ihm zu allen, die auf Jerusalems Erlösung warteten.

³⁹And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

³⁹Und nachdem sie alles vollbracht hatten nach dem Gesetze des Herrn, kehrten sie zurück nach Galiläa, in ihre Stadt Nazareth.

⁴⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

⁴⁰Das Kindlein aber wuchs und ward stark, erfüllt mit Weisheit, und Gottes Gnade war auf ihm.

⁴¹Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

⁴¹Und seine Eltern reisten jährlich am Passahfest nach Jerusalem.

⁴²And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

⁴²Und als er zwölf Jahre alt war, gingen sie nach Gewohnheit des Festes hinauf.

⁴³And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

⁴³Und als sie die Tage vollendet hatten und wieder heimkehrten, blieb der Knabe Jesus in Jerusalem; und seine Eltern wußten es nicht.

⁴⁴But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

⁴⁴Da sie aber meinten, er wäre unter den Gefährten, zogen sie eine Tagereise weit und suchten ihn unter den Verwandten und Bekannten.

⁴⁵And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

⁴⁵Und da sie ihn nicht fanden, kehrten sie wieder nach Jerusalem zurück und suchten ihn.

⁴⁶And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

⁴⁶Und es begab sich, nach drei Tagen fanden sie ihn im Tempel sitzend mitten unter den Lehrern, wie er ihnen zuhörte und sie fragte.

⁴⁷And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

⁴⁷Es erstaunten aber alle, die ihn hörten, über seinen Verstand und seine Antworten.

⁴⁸And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

⁴⁸Und als sie ihn sahen, entsetzten sie sich; und seine Mutter sprach zu ihm: Kind, warum hast du uns das getan? Siehe, dein Vater und ich haben dich mit Schmerzen gesucht.

⁴⁹And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

⁴⁹Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was habt ihr mich gesucht? Wußtet ihr nicht, daß ich sein muß in dem, was meines Vaters ist?

⁵⁰And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

⁵⁰Und sie verstanden das Wort nicht, das er zu ihnen sagte.

⁵¹And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

⁵¹Und er ging mit ihnen hinab und kam gen Nazareth und war ihnen untertan. Und seine Mutter behielt alle diese Worte in ihrem Herzen.

⁵²And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

⁵²Und Jesus nahm zu an Weisheit, Alter und Gnade bei Gott und den Menschen.
