¹And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

¹Und der HERR redete zu Mose in der Ebene der Moabiter, am Jordan, Jericho gegenüber, und sprach:

²Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.

²Gebiete den Kindern Israel, daß sie von ihren Erbgütern den Leviten Städte geben, wo sie wohnen mögen; dazu sollt ihr den Leviten auch die Weideplätze um die Städte hergeben;

³And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.

³damit sie in den Städten wohnen und in den Weideplätzen ihr Vieh, ihre Fahrhabe und allerlei Tiere haben können.

⁴And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.

⁴Die Weideplätze der Städte aber, die sie den Leviten geben, sollen sich von der Stadtmauer nach außen hin eintausend Ellen weit ringsum erstrecken.

⁵And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.

⁵So sollt ihr nun messen außen vor der Stadt an der Seite gegen Morgen zweitausend Ellen und an der Seite gegen Mittag zweitausend Ellen und an der Seite gegen Abend zweitausend Ellen und an der Seite gegen Mitternacht zweitausend Ellen, so daß die Stadt in der Mitte sei.

⁶And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.

⁶Das sollen ihre Weideplätze sein. Und unter den Städten, die ihr den Leviten geben werdet, sollen die sechs Freistädte sein, die ihr ihnen zu geben habt, damit der Totschläger dorthin fliehe; dazu sollt ihr ihnen noch zweiundvierzig Städte geben,

⁷So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.

⁷so daß die Zahl aller Städte, die ihr samt ihren Weideplätzen den Leviten gebet, achtundvierzig betrage.

⁸And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.

⁸Und betreffend die Städte, die ihr vom Erbbesitz der Kinder Israel geben werdet, sollt ihr von einem großen Stamm viele nehmen, und von einem kleineren wenige; ein jeder soll gemäß dem ihm zugeteilten Erbteil den Leviten von seinen Städten geben.

⁹And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

⁹Und der HERR redete zu Mose und sprach:

¹⁰Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of Canaan;

¹⁰Sage den Kindern Israel und sprich zu ihnen: Wenn ihr über den Jordan in das Land Kanaan kommt, sollt ihr Städte verordnen,

¹¹Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.

¹¹die euch als Freistädte dienen, daß ein Totschläger, der eine Seele aus Versehen erschlägt, dorthin fliehe.

¹²And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.

¹²Und es sollen diese Städte euch als Freistatt dienen vor dem Bluträcher, damit der Totschläger nicht sterben müsse, bis er vor der Gemeinde vor Gericht gestanden hat.

¹³And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.

¹³Und unter den Städten, die ihr geben werdet, sollen euch sechs als Freistädte dienen.

¹⁴Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.

¹⁴Drei Städte sollt ihr diesseits des Jordans geben und drei sollt ihr im Lande Kanaan geben; das sollen Freistädte sein.

¹⁵These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.

¹⁵Diese sechs Städte sollen sowohl den Kindern Israel als auch den Fremdlingen und Beisassen unter euch als Freistatt dienen, daß dahin fliehe, wer eine Seele aus Versehen erschlagen hat.

¹⁶And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁶Schlägt er ihn mit einem eisernen Werkzeug, so daß er stirbt, so ist er ein Totschläger, und ein solcher Totschläger soll unbedingt sterben.

¹⁷And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁷Wirft er nach ihm mit einem handlichen Stein, mit dem jemand getötet werden kann, so daß er stirbt, so ist er ein Totschläger, und ein solcher Totschläger soll unbedingt sterben.

¹⁸Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁸Schlägt er ihn mit einem hölzernen Werkzeug, womit man jemand totschlagen kann, so daß er stirbt, so ist er ein Totschläger, und ein solcher Totschläger soll unbedingt sterben.

¹⁹The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.

¹⁹Der Bluträcher soll den Totschläger töten; wenn er ihn antrifft, so soll er ihn töten.

²⁰But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;

²⁰Stößt einer den andern aus Haß, oder wirft er etwas auf ihn mit Vorsatz, so daß er stirbt,

²¹Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.

²¹oder schlägt er ihn aus Feindschaft mit seiner Hand, so daß er stirbt, so soll der, welcher ihn geschlagen hat, unbedingt sterben, denn er ist ein Totschläger. Der Bluträcher soll ihn töten, wenn er ihn antrifft.

²²But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,

²²Wenn er ihn aber von ungefähr, nicht aus Feindschaft stößt oder irgend etwas ohne Vorsatz auf ihn wirft,

²³Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm:

²³oder wenn er irgend einen Stein, davon man sterben kann, auf ihn wirft, so daß er stirbt, und hat es nicht gesehen und ist nicht sein Feind, hat ihm auch nicht übel gewollt,

²⁴Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

²⁴so soll die Gemeinde zwischen dem, der geschlagen hat, und dem Bluträcher nach diesen Rechten entscheiden.

²⁵And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.

²⁵Und die Gemeinde soll den Totschläger aus der Hand des Bluträchers erretten und ihn wieder zu seiner Freistatt führen, dahin er geflohen war; und er soll daselbst bleiben, bis der Hohepriester, den man mit dem heiligen Öl gesalbt hat, stirbt.

²⁶But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;

²⁶Würde aber der Totschläger aus dem Gebiet seiner Freistatt, dahin er geflohen ist,

²⁷And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:

²⁷hinausgehen, und der Bluträcher ihn außerhalb der Marke seiner Freistatt finden und ihn totschlagen, so würde er des Blutes nicht schuldig sein;

²⁸Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

²⁸denn jener sollte bis zum Tode des Hohenpriesters in seiner Freistatt geblieben sein und erst nach dem Tode des Hohenpriesters wieder zum Lande seines Erbteils kommen.

²⁹So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

²⁹Diese Rechtssatzung gilt für alle eure Geschlechter an allen euren Wohnorten.

³⁰Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.

³⁰Wer eine Seele erschlägt, den soll man töten, nach Aussage der Zeugen; ein einziger Zeuge aber genügt nicht zur Hinrichtung eines Menschen.

³¹Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.

³¹Und ihr sollt kein Lösegeld annehmen für die Seele des Totschlägers, welcher des Todes schuldig ist, sondern er soll unbedingt sterben.

³²And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

³²Ihr sollt auch kein Lösegeld von dem annehmen, der zu seiner Freistatt geflohen ist und zurückkehrt, um im Lande zu wohnen, bevor der Priester gestorben ist.

³³So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

³³Entweihet das Land nicht, darin ihr wohnt! Denn das Blut entweiht das Land; und das Land kann von dem Blut, das darin vergossen worden ist, durch nichts anderes gesühnt werden, als durch das Blut dessen, der es vergossen hat.

³⁴Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.

³⁴So verunreinigt nun das Land nicht, darin ihr wohnt, und darin Ich wohne! Denn Ich, der HERR, wohne unter den Kindern Israel.
