¹Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

¹偶像への供え物について答えると、「わたしたちはみな知識を持っている」ことは、わかっている。しかし、知識は人を誇らせ、愛は人の徳を高める。

²And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

²もし人が、自分は何か知っていると思うなら、その人は、知らなければならないほどの事すら、まだ知っていない。

³But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

³しかし、人が神を愛するなら、その人は神に知られているのである。

⁴As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

⁴さて、偶像への供え物を食べることについては、わたしたちは、偶像なるものは実際は世に存在しないこと、また、唯一の神のほかには神がないことを、知っている。

⁵For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

⁵というのは、たとい神々といわれるものが、あるいは天に、あるいは地にあるとしても、そして、多くの神、多くの主があるようではあるが、

⁶But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

⁶わたしたちには、父なる唯一の神のみがいますのである。万物はこの神から出て、わたしたちもこの神に帰する。また、唯一の主イエス・キリストのみがいますのである。万物はこの主により、わたしたちもこの主によっている。

⁷Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

⁷しかし、この知識をすべての人が持っているのではない。ある人々は、偶像についての、これまでの習慣上、偶像への供え物として、それを食べるが、彼らの良心が、弱いために汚されるのである。

⁸But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

⁸食物は、わたしたちを神に導くものではない。食べなくても損はないし、食べても益にはならない。

⁹But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

⁹しかし、あなたがたのこの自由が、弱い者たちのつまずきにならないように、気をつけなさい。

¹⁰For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

¹⁰なぜなら、ある人が、知識のあるあなたが偶像の宮で食事をしているのを見た場合、その人の良心が弱いため、それに「教育されて」、偶像への供え物を食べるようにならないだろうか。

¹¹And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

¹¹するとその弱い人は、あなたの知識によって滅びることになる。この弱い兄弟のためにも、キリストは死なれたのである。

¹²But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

¹²このようにあなたがたが、兄弟たちに対して罪を犯し、その弱い良心を痛めるのは、キリストに対して罪を犯すことなのである。だから、もし食物がわたしの兄弟をつまずかせるなら、兄弟をつまずかせないために、わたしは永久に、断じて肉を食べることはしない。

¹³Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
