¹Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

¹わたしは自由な者ではないか。使徒ではないか。わたしたちの主イエスを見たではないか。あなたがたは、主にあるわたしの働きの実ではないか。

²If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

²わたしは、ほかの人に対しては使徒でないとしても、あなたがたには使徒である。あなたがたが主にあることは、わたしの使徒職の印なのである。

³Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,

³わたしの批判者たちに対する弁明は、これである。

⁴Have we not power to eat and to drink?

⁴わたしたちには、飲み食いをする権利がないのか。

⁵Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

⁵わたしたちには、ほかの使徒たちや主の兄弟たちやケパのように、信者である妻を連れて歩く権利がないのか。

⁶Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

⁶それとも、わたしとバルナバとだけには、労働をせずにいる権利がないのか。

⁷Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

⁷いったい、自分で費用を出して軍隊に加わる者があろうか。ぶどう畑を作っていて、その実を食べない者があろうか。また、羊を飼っていて、その乳を飲まない者があろうか。

⁸Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

⁸わたしは、人間の考えでこう言うのではない。律法もまた、そのように言っているではないか。

⁹For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?

⁹すなわち、モーセの律法に、「穀物をこなしている牛に、くつこをかけてはならない」と書いてある。神は、牛のことを心にかけておられるのだろうか。

¹⁰Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

¹⁰それとも、もっぱら、わたしたちのために言っておられるのか。もちろん、それはわたしたちのためにしるされたのである。すなわち、耕す者は望みをもって耕し、穀物をこなす者は、その分け前をもらう望みをもってこなすのである。

¹¹If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

¹¹もしわたしたちが、あなたがたのために霊のものをまいたのなら、肉のものをあなたがたから刈りとるのは、行き過ぎだろうか。

¹²If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

¹²もしほかの人々が、あなたがたに対するこの権利にあずかっているとすれば、わたしたちはなおさらのことではないか。しかしわたしたちは、この権利を利用せず、かえってキリストの福音の妨げにならないようにと、すべてのことを忍んでいる。

¹³Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

¹³あなたがたは、宮仕えをしている人たちは宮から下がる物を食べ、祭壇に奉仕している人たちは祭壇の供え物の分け前にあずかることを、知らないのか。

¹⁴Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

¹⁴それと同様に、主は、福音を宣べ伝えている者たちが福音によって生活すべきことを、定められたのである。

¹⁵But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

¹⁵しかしわたしは、これらの権利を一つも利用しなかった。また、自分がそうしてもらいたいから、このように書くのではない。そうされるよりは、死ぬ方がましである。わたしのこの誇は、何者にも奪い去られてはならないのだ。

¹⁶For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

¹⁶わたしが福音を宣べ伝えても、それは誇にはならない。なぜなら、わたしは、そうせずにはおれないからである。もし福音を宣べ伝えないなら、わたしはわざわいである。

¹⁷For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

¹⁷進んでそれをすれば、報酬を受けるであろう。しかし、進んでしないとしても、それは、わたしにゆだねられた務なのである。

¹⁸What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

¹⁸それでは、その報酬はなんであるか。福音を宣べ伝えるのにそれを無代価で提供し、わたしが宣教者として持つ権利を利用しないことである。

¹⁹For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

¹⁹わたしは、すべての人に対して自由であるが、できるだけ多くの人を得るために、自ら進んですべての人の奴隷になった。

²⁰And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

²⁰ユダヤ人には、ユダヤ人のようになった。ユダヤ人を得るためである。律法の下にある人には、わたし自身は律法の下にはないが、律法の下にある者のようになった。律法の下にある人を得るためである。

²¹To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

²¹律法のない人には――わたしは神の律法の外にあるのではなく、キリストの律法の中にあるのだが――律法のない人のようになった。律法のない人を得るためである。

²²To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

²²弱い人には弱い者になった。弱い人を得るためである。すべての人に対しては、すべての人のようになった。なんとかして幾人かを救うためである。

²³And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

²³福音のために、わたしはどんな事でもする。わたしも共に福音にあずかるためである。

²⁴Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

²⁴あなたがたは知らないのか。競技場で走る者は、みな走りはするが、賞を得る者はひとりだけである。あなたがたも、賞を得るように走りなさい。

²⁵And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

²⁵しかし、すべて競技をする者は、何ごとにも節制をする。彼らは朽ちる冠を得るためにそうするが、わたしたちは朽ちない冠を得るためにそうするのである。

²⁶I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

²⁶そこで、わたしは目標のはっきりしないような走り方をせず、空を打つような拳闘はしない。すなわち、自分のからだを打ちたたいて服従させるのである。そうしないと、ほかの人に宣べ伝えておきながら、自分は失格者になるかも知れない。

²⁷But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
