¹Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

¹兄弟たちよ。このことを知らずにいてもらいたくない。わたしたちの先祖はみな雲の下におり、みな海を通り、

²And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

²みな雲の中、海の中で、モーセにつくバプテスマを受けた。

³And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

³また、みな同じ霊の食物を食べ、

⁴And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

⁴みな同じ霊の飲み物を飲んだ。すなわち、彼らについてきた霊の岩から飲んだのであるが、この岩はキリストにほかならない。

⁵But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁵しかし、彼らの中の大多数は、神のみこころにかなわなかったので、荒野で滅ぼされてしまった。

⁶Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

⁶これらの出来事は、わたしたちに対する警告であって、彼らが悪をむさぼったように、わたしたちも悪をむさぼることのないためなのである。

⁷Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

⁷だから、彼らの中のある者たちのように、偶像礼拝者になってはならない。すなわち、「民は座して飲み食いをし、また立って踊り戯れた」と書いてある。

⁸Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

⁸また、ある者たちがしたように、わたしたちは不品行をしてはならない。不品行をしたため倒された者が、一日に二万三千人もあった。

⁹Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

⁹また、ある者たちがしたように、わたしたちは主を試みてはならない。主を試みた者は、へびに殺された。

¹⁰Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

¹⁰また、ある者たちがつぶやいたように、つぶやいてはならない。つぶやいた者は、「死の使」に滅ぼされた。

¹¹Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

¹¹これらの事が彼らに起ったのは、他に対する警告としてであって、それが書かれたのは、世の終りに臨んでいるわたしたちに対する訓戒のためである。

¹²Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

¹²だから、立っていると思う者は、倒れないように気をつけるがよい。

¹³There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

¹³あなたがたの会った試錬で、世の常でないものはない。神は真実である。あなたがたを耐えられないような試錬に会わせることはないばかりか、試錬と同時に、それに耐えられるように、のがれる道も備えて下さるのである。

¹⁴Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

¹⁴それだから、愛する者たちよ。偶像礼拝を避けなさい。

¹⁵I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

¹⁵賢明なあなたがたに訴える。わたしの言うことを、自ら判断してみるがよい。

¹⁶The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

¹⁶わたしたちが祝福する祝福の杯、それはキリストの血にあずかることではないか。わたしたちがさくパン、それはキリストのからだにあずかることではないか。

¹⁷For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

¹⁷パンが一つであるから、わたしたちは多くいても、一つのからだなのである。みんなの者が一つのパンを共にいただくからである。

¹⁸Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

¹⁸肉によるイスラエルを見るがよい。供え物を食べる人たちは、祭壇にあずかるのではないか。

¹⁹What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

¹⁹すると、なんと言ったらよいか。偶像にささげる供え物は、何か意味があるのか。また、偶像は何かほんとうにあるものか。

²⁰But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

²⁰そうではない。人々が供える物は、悪霊ども、すなわち、神ならぬ者に供えるのである。わたしは、あなたがたが悪霊の仲間になることを望まない。

²¹Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

²¹主の杯と悪霊どもの杯とを、同時に飲むことはできない。主の食卓と悪霊どもの食卓とに、同時にあずかることはできない。

²²Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

²²それとも、わたしたちは主のねたみを起そうとするのか。わたしたちは、主よりも強いのだろうか。

²³All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

²³すべてのことは許されている。しかし、すべてのことが益になるわけではない。すべてのことは許されている。しかし、すべてのことが人の徳を高めるのではない。

²⁴Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

²⁴だれでも、自分の益を求めないで、ほかの人の益を求めるべきである。

²⁵Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

²⁵すべて市場で売られている物は、いちいち良心に問うことをしないで、食べるがよい。

²⁶For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

²⁶地とそれに満ちている物とは、主のものだからである。

²⁷If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

²⁷もしあなたがたが、不信者のだれかに招かれて、そこに行こうと思う場合、自分の前に出される物はなんでも、いちいち良心に問うことをしないで、食べるがよい。

²⁸But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

²⁸しかし、だれかがあなたがたに、これはささげ物の肉だと言ったなら、それを知らせてくれた人のために、また良心のために、食べないがよい。

²⁹Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

²⁹良心と言ったのは、自分の良心ではなく、他人の良心のことである。なぜなら、わたしの自由が、どうして他人の良心によって左右されることがあろうか。

³⁰For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

³⁰もしわたしが感謝して食べる場合、その感謝する物について、どうして人のそしりを受けるわけがあろうか。

³¹Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

³¹だから、飲むにも食べるにも、また何事をするにも、すべて神の栄光のためにすべきである。

³²Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

³²ユダヤ人にもギリシヤ人にも神の教会にも、つまずきになってはいけない。わたしもまた、何事にもすべての人に喜ばれるように努め、多くの人が救われるために、自分の益ではなく彼らの益を求めている。

³³Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
