¹My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

¹わたしの子たちよ。これらのことを書きおくるのは、あなたがたが罪を犯さないようになるためである。もし、罪を犯す者があれば、父のみもとには、わたしたちのために助け主、すなわち、義なるイエス・キリストがおられる。

²And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

²彼は、わたしたちの罪のための、あがないの供え物である。ただ、わたしたちの罪のためばかりではなく、全世界の罪のためである。

³And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

³もし、わたしたちが彼の戒めを守るならば、それによって彼を知っていることを悟るのである。

⁴He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

⁴「彼を知っている」と言いながら、その戒めを守らない者は、偽り者であって、真理はその人のうちにない。

⁵But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

⁵しかし、彼の御言を守る者があれば、その人のうちに、神の愛が真に全うされるのである。それによって、わたしたちが彼にあることを知るのである。

⁶He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

⁶「彼におる」と言う者は、彼が歩かれたように、その人自身も歩くべきである。

⁷Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

⁷愛する者たちよ。わたしがあなたがたに書きおくるのは、新しい戒めではなく、あなたがたが初めから受けていた古い戒めである。その古い戒めとは、あなたがたがすでに聞いた御言である。

⁸Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

⁸しかも、新しい戒めを、あなたがたに書きおくるのである。そして、それは、彼にとってもあなたがたにとっても、真理なのである。なぜなら、やみは過ぎ去り、まことの光がすでに輝いているからである。

⁹He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

⁹「光の中にいる」と言いながら、その兄弟を憎む者は、今なお、やみの中にいるのである。

¹⁰He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

¹⁰兄弟を愛する者は、光におるのであって、つまずくことはない。

¹¹But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

¹¹兄弟を憎む者は、やみの中におり、やみの中を歩くのであって、自分ではどこへ行くのかわからない。やみが彼の目を見えなくしたからである。

¹²I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.

¹²子たちよ。あなたがたにこれを書きおくるのは、御名のゆえに、あなたがたの多くの罪がゆるされたからである。

¹³I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

¹³父たちよ。あなたがたに書きおくるのは、あなたがたが、初めからいますかたを知ったからである。若者たちよ。あなたがたに書きおくるのは、あなたがたが、悪しき者にうち勝ったからである。

¹⁴I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

¹⁴子供たちよ。あなたがたに書きおくったのは、あなたがたが父を知ったからである。父たちよ。あなたがたに書きおくったのは、あなたがたが、初めからいますかたを知ったからである。若者たちよ。あなたがたに書きおくったのは、あなたがたが強い者であり、神の言があなたがたに宿り、そして、あなたがたが悪しき者にうち勝ったからである。

¹⁵Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

¹⁵世と世にあるものとを、愛してはいけない。もし、世を愛する者があれば、父の愛は彼のうちにない。

¹⁶For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

¹⁶すべて世にあるもの、すなわち、肉の欲、目の欲、持ち物の誇は、父から出たものではなく、世から出たものである。

¹⁷And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

¹⁷世と世の欲とは過ぎ去る。しかし、神の御旨を行う者は、永遠にながらえる。

¹⁸Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

¹⁸子供たちよ。今は終りの時である。あなたがたがかねて反キリストが来ると聞いていたように、今や多くの反キリストが現れてきた。それによって今が終りの時であることを知る。

¹⁹They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

¹⁹彼らはわたしたちから出て行った。しかし、彼らはわたしたちに属する者ではなかったのである。もし属する者であったなら、わたしたちと一緒にとどまっていたであろう。しかし、出て行ったのは、元来、彼らがみなわたしたちに属さない者であることが、明らかにされるためである。

²⁰But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

²⁰しかし、あなたがたは聖なる者に油を注がれているので、あなたがたすべてが、そのことを知っている。

²¹I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

²¹わたしが書きおくったのは、あなたがたが真理を知らないからではなく、それを知っているからであり、また、すべての偽りは真理から出るものでないことを、知っているからである。

²²Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

²²偽り者とは、だれであるか。イエスのキリストであることを否定する者ではないか。父と御子とを否定する者は、反キリストである。

²³Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

²³御子を否定する者は父を持たず、御子を告白する者は、また父をも持つのである。

²⁴Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

²⁴初めから聞いたことが、あなたがたのうちに、とどまるようにしなさい。初めから聞いたことが、あなたがたのうちにとどまっておれば、あなたがたも御子と父とのうちに、とどまることになる。

²⁵And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

²⁵これが、彼自らわたしたちに約束された約束であって、すなわち、永遠のいのちである。

²⁶These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

²⁶わたしは、あなたがたを惑わす者たちについて、これらのことを書きおくった。

²⁷But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

²⁷あなたがたのうちには、キリストからいただいた油がとどまっているので、だれにも教えてもらう必要はない。この油が、すべてのことをあなたがたに教える。それはまことであって、偽りではないから、その油が教えたように、あなたがたは彼のうちにとどまっていなさい。

²⁸And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

²⁸そこで、子たちよ。キリストのうちにとどまっていなさい。それは、彼が現れる時に、確信を持ち、その来臨に際して、みまえに恥じいることがないためである。彼の義なるかたであることがわかれば、義を行う者はみな彼から生れたものであることを、知るであろう。

²⁹If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

²⁹彼の義なるかたであることがわかれば、義を行う者はみな彼から生れたものであることを、知るであろう。
