¹Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

¹わたしたちが神の子と呼ばれるためには、どんなに大きな愛を父から賜わったことか、よく考えてみなさい。わたしたちは、すでに神の子なのである。世がわたしたちを知らないのは、父を知らなかったからである。

²Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

²愛する者たちよ。わたしたちは今や神の子である。しかし、わたしたちがどうなるのか、まだ明らかではない。彼が現れる時、わたしたちは、自分たちが彼に似るものとなることを知っている。そのまことの御姿を見るからである。

³And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

³彼についてこの望みをいだいている者は皆、彼がきよくあられるように、自らをきよくする。

⁴Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

⁴すべて罪を犯す者は、不法を行う者である。罪は不法である。

⁵And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

⁵あなたがたが知っているとおり、彼は罪をとり除くために現れたのであって、彼にはなんらの罪がない。

⁶Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

⁶すべて彼におる者は、罪を犯さない。すべて罪を犯す者は彼を見たこともなく、知ったこともない者である。

⁷Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

⁷子たちよ。だれにも惑わされてはならない。彼が義人であると同様に、義を行う者は義人である。

⁸He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

⁸罪を犯す者は、悪魔から出た者である。悪魔は初めから罪を犯しているからである。神の子が現れたのは、悪魔のわざを滅ぼしてしまうためである。

⁹Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

⁹すべて神から生れた者は、罪を犯さない。神の種が、その人のうちにとどまっているからである。また、その人は、神から生れた者であるから、罪を犯すことができない。

¹⁰In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

¹⁰神の子と悪魔の子との区別は、これによって明らかである。すなわち、すべて義を行わない者は、神から出た者ではない。兄弟を愛さない者も、同様である。

¹¹For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

¹¹わたしたちは互に愛し合うべきである。これが、あなたがたの初めから聞いていたおとずれである。

¹²Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

¹²カインのようになってはいけない。彼は悪しき者から出て、その兄弟を殺したのである。なぜ兄弟を殺したのか。彼のわざが悪く、その兄弟のわざは正しかったからである。

¹³Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

¹³兄弟たちよ。世があなたがたを憎んでも、驚くには及ばない。

¹⁴We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

¹⁴わたしたちは、兄弟を愛しているので、死からいのちへ移ってきたことを、知っている。愛さない者は、死のうちにとどまっている。

¹⁵Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

¹⁵あなたがたが知っているとおり、すべて兄弟を憎む者は人殺しであり、人殺しはすべて、そのうちに永遠のいのちをとどめてはいない。

¹⁶Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

¹⁶主は、わたしたちのためにいのちを捨てて下さった。それによって、わたしたちは愛ということを知った。それゆえに、わたしたちもまた、兄弟のためにいのちを捨てるべきである。

¹⁷But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

¹⁷世の富を持っていながら、兄弟が困っているのを見て、あわれみの心を閉じる者には、どうして神の愛が、彼のうちにあろうか。

¹⁸My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

¹⁸子たちよ。わたしたちは言葉や口先だけで愛するのではなく、行いと真実とをもって愛し合おうではないか。

¹⁹And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

¹⁹それによって、わたしたちが真理から出たものであることがわかる。そして、神のみまえに心を安んじていよう。

²⁰For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

²⁰なぜなら、たといわたしたちの心に責められるようなことがあっても、神はわたしたちの心よりも大いなるかたであって、すべてをご存じだからである。

²¹Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

²¹愛する者たちよ。もし心に責められるようなことがなければ、わたしたちは神に対して確信を持つことができる。

²²And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

²²そして、願い求めるものは、なんでもいただけるのである。それは、わたしたちが神の戒めを守り、みこころにかなうことを、行っているからである。

²³And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

²³その戒めというのは、神の子イエス・キリストの御名を信じ、わたしたちに命じられたように、互に愛し合うべきことである。神の戒めを守る人は、神におり、神もまたその人にいます。そして、神がわたしたちのうちにいますことは、神がわたしたちに賜わった御霊によって知るのである。

²⁴And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

²⁴神の戒めを守る人は、神におり、神もまたその人にいます。そして、神がわたしたちのうちにいますことは、神がわたしたちに賜わった御霊によって知るのである。
