¹Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

¹愛する者たちよ。すべての霊を信じることはしないで、それらの霊が神から出たものであるかどうか、ためしなさい。多くのにせ預言者が世に出てきているからである。

²Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

²あなたがたは、こうして神の霊を知るのである。すなわち、イエス・キリストが肉体をとってこられたことを告白する霊は、すべて神から出ているものであり、

³And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

³イエスを告白しない霊は、すべて神から出ているものではない。これは、反キリストの霊である。あなたがたは、それが来るとかねて聞いていたが、今やすでに世にきている。

⁴Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

⁴子たちよ。あなたがたは神から出た者であって、彼らにうち勝ったのである。あなたがたのうちにいますのは、世にある者よりも大いなる者なのである。

⁵They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

⁵彼らは世から出たものである。だから、彼らは世のことを語り、世も彼らの言うことを聞くのである。

⁶We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

⁶しかし、わたしたちは神から出たものである。神を知っている者は、わたしたちの言うことを聞き、神から出ない者は、わたしたちの言うことを聞かない。これによって、わたしたちは、真理の霊と迷いの霊との区別を知るのである。

⁷Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

⁷愛する者たちよ。わたしたちは互に愛し合おうではないか。愛は、神から出たものなのである。すべて愛する者は、神から生れた者であって、神を知っている。

⁸He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

⁸愛さない者は、神を知らない。神は愛である。

⁹In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

⁹神はそのひとり子を世につかわし、彼によってわたしたちを生きるようにして下さった。それによって、わたしたちに対する神の愛が明らかにされたのである。

¹⁰Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

¹⁰わたしたちが神を愛したのではなく、神がわたしたちを愛して下さって、わたしたちの罪のためにあがないの供え物として、御子をおつかわしになった。ここに愛がある。

¹¹Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

¹¹愛する者たちよ。神がこのようにわたしたちを愛して下さったのであるから、わたしたちも互に愛し合うべきである。

¹²No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

¹²神を見た者は、まだひとりもいない。もしわたしたちが互に愛し合うなら、神はわたしたちのうちにいまし、神の愛がわたしたちのうちに全うされるのである。

¹³Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

¹³神が御霊をわたしたちに賜わったことによって、わたしたちが神におり、神がわたしたちにいますことを知る。

¹⁴And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

¹⁴わたしたちは、父が御子を世の救主としておつかわしになったのを見て、そのあかしをするのである。

¹⁵Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

¹⁵もし人が、イエスを神の子と告白すれば、神はその人のうちにいまし、その人は神のうちにいるのである。

¹⁶And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

¹⁶わたしたちは、神がわたしたちに対して持っておられる愛を知り、かつ信じている。神は愛である。愛のうちにいる者は、神におり、神も彼にいます。

¹⁷Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

¹⁷わたしたちもこの世にあって彼のように生きているので、さばきの日に確信を持って立つことができる。そのことによって、愛がわたしたちに全うされているのである。

¹⁸There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

¹⁸愛には恐れがない。完全な愛は恐れをとり除く。恐れには懲らしめが伴い、かつ恐れる者には、愛が全うされていないからである。

¹⁹We love him, because he first loved us.

¹⁹わたしたちが愛し合うのは、神がまずわたしたちを愛して下さったからである。

²⁰If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

²⁰「神を愛している」と言いながら兄弟を憎む者は、偽り者である。現に見ている兄弟を愛さない者は、目に見えない神を愛することはできない。神を愛する者は、兄弟をも愛すべきである。この戒めを、わたしたちは神から授かっている。

²¹And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
