¹Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

¹すべてイエスのキリストであることを信じる者は、神から生れた者である。すべて生んで下さったかたを愛する者は、そのかたから生れた者をも愛するのである。

²By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

²神を愛してその戒めを行えば、それによってわたしたちは、神の子たちを愛していることを知るのである。

³For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

³神を愛するとは、すなわち、その戒めを守ることである。そして、その戒めはむずかしいものではない。

⁴For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

⁴なぜなら、すべて神から生れた者は、世に勝つからである。そして、わたしたちの信仰こそ、世に勝たしめた勝利の力である。

⁵Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

⁵世に勝つ者はだれか。イエスを神の子と信じる者ではないか。

⁶This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

⁶このイエス・キリストは、水と血とをとおってこられたかたである。水によるだけではなく、水と血とによってこられたのである。そのあかしをするものは、御霊である。御霊は真理だからである。

⁷For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

⁷あかしをするものが、三つある。

⁸And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

⁸御霊と水と血とである。そして、この三つのものは一致する。

⁹If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

⁹わたしたちは人間のあかしを受けいれるが、しかし、神のあかしはさらにまさっている。神のあかしというのは、すなわち、御子について立てられたあかしである。

¹⁰He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

¹⁰神の子を信じる者は、自分のうちにこのあかしを持っている。神を信じない者は、神を偽り者とする。神が御子についてあかしせられたそのあかしを、信じていないからである。

¹¹And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

¹¹そのあかしとは、神が永遠のいのちをわたしたちに賜わり、かつ、そのいのちが御子のうちにあるということである。

¹²He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

¹²御子を持つ者はいのちを持ち、神の御子を持たない者はいのちを持っていない。

¹³These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

¹³これらのことをあなたがたに書きおくったのは、神の子の御名を信じるあなたがたに、永遠のいのちを持っていることを、悟らせるためである。

¹⁴And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

¹⁴わたしたちが神に対していだいている確信は、こうである。すなわち、わたしたちが何事でも神の御旨に従って願い求めるなら、神はそれを聞きいれて下さるということである。

¹⁵And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

¹⁵そして、わたしたちが願い求めることは、なんでも聞きいれて下さるとわかれば、神に願い求めたことはすでにかなえられたことを、知るのである。

¹⁶If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

¹⁶もしだれかが死に至ることのない罪を犯している兄弟を見たら、神に願い求めなさい。そうすれば神は、死に至ることのない罪を犯している人々には、いのちを賜わるであろう。死に至る罪がある。これについては、願い求めよ、とは言わない。

¹⁷All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

¹⁷不義はすべて、罪である。しかし、死に至ることのない罪もある。

¹⁸We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

¹⁸すべて神から生れた者は罪を犯さないことを、わたしたちは知っている。神から生れたかたが彼を守っていて下さるので、悪しき者が手を触れるようなことはない。

¹⁹And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

¹⁹また、わたしたちは神から出た者であり、全世界は悪しき者の配下にあることを、知っている。

²⁰And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

²⁰さらに、神の子がきて、真実なかたを知る知力をわたしたちに授けて下さったことも、知っている。そして、わたしたちは、真実なかたにおり、御子イエス・キリストにおるのである。このかたは真実な神であり、永遠のいのちである。子たちよ。気をつけて、偶像を避けなさい。

²¹Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
