¹Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

¹最後に、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは主イエスにあってあなたがたに願いかつ勧める。あなたがたが、どのように歩いて神を喜ばすべきかをわたしたちから学んだように、また、いま歩いているとおりに、ますます歩き続けなさい。

²For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

²わたしたちがどういう教を主イエスによって与えたか、あなたがたはよく知っている。

³For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

³神のみこころは、あなたがたが清くなることである。すなわち、不品行を慎み、

⁴That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

⁴各自、気をつけて自分のからだを清く尊く保ち、

⁵Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

⁵神を知らない異邦人のように情欲をほしいままにせず、

⁶That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

⁶また、このようなことで兄弟を踏みつけたり、だましたりしてはならない。前にもあなたがたにきびしく警告しておいたように、主はこれらすべてのことについて、報いをなさるからである。

⁷For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

⁷神がわたしたちを召されたのは、汚れたことをするためではなく、清くなるためである。

⁸He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

⁸こういうわけであるから、これらの警告を拒む者は、人を拒むのではなく、聖霊をあなたがたの心に賜わる神を拒むのである。

⁹But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

⁹兄弟愛については、今さら書きおくる必要はない。あなたがたは、互に愛し合うように神に直接教えられており、

¹⁰And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;

¹⁰また、事実マケドニヤ全土にいるすべての兄弟に対して、それを実行しているのだから。しかし、兄弟たちよ。あなたがたに勧める。ますます、そうしてほしい。

¹¹And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

¹¹そして、あなたがたに命じておいたように、つとめて落ち着いた生活をし、自分の仕事に身をいれ、手ずから働きなさい。

¹²That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

¹²そうすれば、外部の人々に対して品位を保ち、まただれの世話にもならずに、生活できるであろう。

¹³But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

¹³兄弟たちよ。眠っている人々については、無知でいてもらいたくない。望みを持たない外の人々のように、あなたがたが悲しむことのないためである。

¹⁴For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

¹⁴わたしたちが信じているように、イエスが死んで復活されたからには、同様に神はイエスにあって眠っている人々をも、イエスと一緒に導き出して下さるであろう。

¹⁵For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

¹⁵わたしたちは主の言葉によって言うが、生きながらえて主の来臨の時まで残るわたしたちが、眠った人々より先になることは、決してないであろう。

¹⁶For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

¹⁶すなわち、主ご自身が天使のかしらの声と神のラッパの鳴り響くうちに、合図の声で、天から下ってこられる。その時、キリストにあって死んだ人々が、まず最初によみがえり、

¹⁷Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

¹⁷それから生き残っているわたしたちが、彼らと共に雲に包まれて引き上げられ、空中で主に会い、こうして、いつも主と共にいるであろう。だから、あなたがたは、これらの言葉をもって互に慰め合いなさい。

¹⁸Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
