¹But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

¹兄弟たちよ。その時期と場合とについては、書きおくる必要はない。

²For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

²あなたがた自身がよく知っているとおり、主の日は盗人が夜くるように来る。

³For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

³人々が平和だ無事だと言っているその矢先に、ちょうど妊婦に産みの苦しみが臨むように、突如として滅びが彼らをおそって来る。そして、それからのがれることは決してできない。

⁴But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

⁴しかし兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは暗やみの中にいないのだから、その日が、盗人のようにあなたがたを不意に襲うことはないであろう。

⁵Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

⁵あなたがたはみな光の子であり、昼の子なのである。わたしたちは、夜の者でもやみの者でもない。

⁶Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

⁶だから、ほかの人々のように眠っていないで、目をさまして慎んでいよう。

⁷For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

⁷眠る者は夜眠り、酔う者は夜酔うのである。

⁸But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

⁸しかし、わたしたちは昼の者なのだから、信仰と愛との胸当を身につけ、救の望みのかぶとをかぶって、慎んでいよう。

⁹For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

⁹神は、わたしたちを怒りにあわせるように定められたのではなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって救を得るように定められたのである。

¹⁰Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

¹⁰キリストがわたしたちのために死なれたのは、さめていても眠っていても、わたしたちが主と共に生きるためである。

¹¹Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

¹¹だから、あなたがたは、今しているように、互に慰め合い、相互の徳を高めなさい。

¹²And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

¹²兄弟たちよ。わたしたちはお願いする。どうか、あなたがたの間で労し、主にあってあなたがたを指導し、かつ訓戒している人々を重んじ、

¹³And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

¹³彼らの働きを思って、特に愛し敬いなさい。互に平和に過ごしなさい。

¹⁴Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

¹⁴兄弟たちよ。あなたがたにお勧めする。怠惰な者を戒め、小心な者を励まし、弱い者を助け、すべての人に対して寛容でありなさい。

¹⁵See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

¹⁵だれも悪をもって悪に報いないように心がけ、お互に、またみんなに対して、いつも善を追い求めなさい。

¹⁶Rejoice evermore.

¹⁶いつも喜んでいなさい。

¹⁷Pray without ceasing.

¹⁷絶えず祈りなさい。

¹⁸In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

¹⁸すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これが、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである。

¹⁹Quench not the Spirit.

¹⁹御霊を消してはいけない。

²⁰Despise not prophesyings.

²⁰預言を軽んじてはならない。

²¹Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

²¹すべてのものを識別して、良いものを守り、

²²Abstain from all appearance of evil.

²²あらゆる種類の悪から遠ざかりなさい。

²³And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²³どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。

²⁴Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

²⁴あなたがたを召されたかたは真実であられるから、このことをして下さるであろう。

²⁵Brethren, pray for us.

²⁵兄弟たちよ。わたしたちのためにも、祈ってほしい。

²⁶Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

²⁶すべての兄弟たちに、きよい接吻をもって、よろしく伝えてほしい。

²⁷I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

²⁷わたしは主によって命じる。この手紙を、みんなの兄弟に読み聞かせなさい。わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの恵みが、あなたがたと共にあるように。

²⁸The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
