¹Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:

²Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

²わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。

³Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

³ほむべきかな、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの父なる神、あわれみ深き父、慰めに満ちたる神。

⁴Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

⁴神は、いかなる患難の中にいる時でもわたしたちを慰めて下さり、また、わたしたち自身も、神に慰めていただくその慰めをもって、あらゆる患難の中にある人々を慰めることができるようにして下さるのである。

⁵For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

⁵それは、キリストの苦難がわたしたちに満ちあふれているように、わたしたちの受ける慰めもまた、キリストによって満ちあふれているからである。

⁶And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

⁶わたしたちが患難に会うなら、それはあなたがたの慰めと救とのためであり、慰めを受けるなら、それはあなたがたの慰めのためであって、その慰めは、わたしたちが受けているのと同じ苦難に耐えさせる力となるのである。

⁷And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

⁷だから、あなたがたに対していだいているわたしたちの望みは、動くことがない。あなたがたが、わたしたちと共に苦難にあずかっているように、慰めにも共にあずかっていることを知っているからである。

⁸For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

⁸兄弟たちよ。わたしたちがアジヤで会った患難を、知らずにいてもらいたくない。わたしたちは極度に、耐えられないほど圧迫されて、生きる望みをさえ失ってしまい、

⁹But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

⁹心のうちで死を覚悟し、自分自身を頼みとしないで、死人をよみがえらせて下さる神を頼みとするに至った。

¹⁰Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

¹⁰神はこのような死の危険から、わたしたちを救い出して下さった、また救い出して下さるであろう。わたしたちは、神が今後も救い出して下さることを望んでいる。

¹¹Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

¹¹そして、あなたがたもまた祈をもって、ともどもに、わたしたちを助けてくれるであろう。これは多くの人々の願いによりわたしたちに賜わった恵みについて、多くの人が感謝をささげるようになるためである。

¹²For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

¹²さて、わたしたちがこの世で、ことにあなたがたに対し、人間の知恵によってではなく神の恵みによって、神の神聖と真実とによって行動してきたことは、実にわたしたちの誇であって、良心のあかしするところである。

¹³For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;

¹³わたしたちが書いていることは、あなたがたが読んで理解できないことではない。それを完全に理解してくれるように、わたしは希望する。

¹⁴As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.

¹⁴すでにある程度わたしたちを理解してくれているとおり、わたしたちの主イエスの日には、あなたがたがわたしたちの誇であるように、わたしたちもあなたがたの誇なのである。

¹⁵And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;

¹⁶And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

¹⁶それからそちらを通ってマケドニヤにおもむき、そして再びマケドニヤからあなたがたの所に帰り、あなたがたの見送りを受けてユダヤに行く計画を立てたのである。

¹⁷When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

¹⁷この計画を立てたのは、軽率なことであったであろうか。それとも、自分の計画を肉の思いによって計画したため、わたしの「しかり、しかり」が同時に「否、否」であったのだろうか。

¹⁸But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

¹⁸神の真実にかけて言うが、あなたがたに対するわたしの言葉は、「しかり」と同時に「否」というようなものではない。

¹⁹For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

¹⁹なぜなら、わたしたち、すなわち、わたしとシルワノとテモテとが、あなたがたに宣べ伝えた神の子キリスト・イエスは、「しかり」となると同時に「否」となったのではない。そうではなく、「しかり」がイエスにおいて実現されたのである。

²⁰For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

²⁰なぜなら、神の約束はことごとく、彼において「しかり」となったからである。だから、わたしたちは、彼によって「アァメン」と唱えて、神に栄光を帰するのである。

²¹Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

²¹あなたがたと共にわたしたちを、キリストのうちに堅くささえ、油をそそいで下さったのは、神である。

²²Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

²²神はまた、わたしたちに証印をおし、その保証として、わたしたちの心に御霊を賜わったのである。

²³Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.

²³わたしは自分の魂をかけ、神を証人に呼び求めて言うが、わたしがコリントに行かないでいるのは、あなたがたに対して寛大でありたいためである。わたしたちは、あなたがたの信仰を支配する者ではなく、あなたがたの喜びのために共に働いている者にすぎない。あなたがたは、信仰に堅く立っているからである。

²⁴Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
