¹Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;

¹兄弟たちよ。わたしたちはここで、マケドニヤの諸教会に与えられた神の恵みを、あなたがたに知らせよう。

²How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

²すなわち、彼らは、患難のために激しい試錬をうけたが、その満ちあふれる喜びは、極度の貧しさにもかかわらず、あふれ出て惜しみなく施す富となったのである。

³For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;

³わたしはあかしするが、彼らは力に応じて、否、力以上に施しをした。すなわち、自ら進んで、

⁴Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

⁴聖徒たちへの奉仕に加わる恵みにあずかりたいと、わたしたちに熱心に願い出て、

⁵And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

⁵わたしたちの希望どおりにしたばかりか、自分自身をまず、神のみこころにしたがって、主にささげ、また、わたしたちにもささげたのである。

⁶Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

⁶そこで、この募金をテトスがあなたがたの所で、すでに始めた以上、またそれを完成するようにと、わたしたちは彼に勧めたのである。

⁷Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

⁷さて、あなたがたがあらゆる事がらについて富んでいるように、すなわち、信仰にも言葉にも知識にも、あらゆる熱情にも、また、あなたがたに対するわたしたちの愛にも富んでいるように、この恵みのわざにも富んでほしい。

⁸I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

⁸こう言っても、わたしは命令するのではない。ただ、他の人たちの熱情によって、あなたがたの愛の純真さをためそうとするのである。

⁹For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

⁹あなたがたは、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの恵みを知っている。すなわち、主は富んでおられたのに、あなたがたのために貧しくなられた。それは、あなたがたが、彼の貧しさによって富む者になるためである。

¹⁰And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.

¹⁰そこで、わたしは、この恵みのわざについて意見を述べよう。それがあなたがたの益になるからである。あなたがたはこの事を、昨年以来、他に先んじて実行したばかりではなく、それを願っていた。

¹¹Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.

¹¹だから今、それをやりとげなさい。あなたがたが心から願っているように、持っているところに応じて、それをやりとげなさい。

¹²For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

¹²もし心から願ってそうするなら、持たないところによらず、持っているところによって、神に受けいれられるのである。

¹³For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened:

¹³それは、ほかの人々に楽をさせて、あなたがたに苦労をさせようとするのではなく、持ち物を等しくするためである。

¹⁴But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:

¹⁴すなわち、今の場合は、あなたがたの余裕があの人たちの欠乏を補い、後には、彼らの余裕があなたがたの欠乏を補い、こうして等しくなるようにするのである。

¹⁵As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.

¹⁵それは「多く得た者も余ることがなく、少ししか得なかった者も足りないことはなかった」と書いてあるとおりである。

¹⁶But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.

¹⁶わたしがあなたがたに対して持っている同じ熱情を、テトスの心にも与えて下さった神に感謝する。

¹⁷For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.

¹⁷彼はわたしの勧めを受けいれ、そして更に熱心になって、自分から進んであなたがたのところに行った。

¹⁸And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches;

¹⁸わたしたちはまた、テトスと一緒に、ひとりの兄弟を送る。この兄弟が福音宣伝の上で得たほまれは、すべての教会に聞えているが、

¹⁹And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:

¹⁹そのうえ、彼は、主ご自身の栄光があらわれるため、また、わたしたちの好意を示すために、骨を折って贈り物を集めているわたしたちの同伴者として、諸教会から選ばれたのである。

²⁰Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:

²⁰そうしたのは、わたしたちが集めているこの寄附金のことについて、人にかれこれ言われるのを避けるためである。

²¹Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

²¹わたしたちは、主のみまえばかりではなく、人の前でも公正であるように、気を配っているのである。

²²And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.

²²また、もうひとりの兄弟を彼らと一緒に送る。わたしたちは、多くの事について彼が熱心であったことを、たびたび認めた。彼は今、あなたがたを非常に信頼して、ますます熱心になっている。

²³Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

²³テトスについて言えば、彼はわたしの仲間であり、あなたがたに対するわたしの協力者である。この兄弟たちについて言えば、彼らは諸教会の使者、キリストの栄光である。だから、あなたがたの愛と、また、あなたがたについてわたしたちがいだいている誇とが、真実であることを、諸教会の前で彼らにあかししていただきたい。

²⁴Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.

²⁴だから、あなたがたの愛と、また、あなたがたについてわたしたちがいだいている誇とが、真実であることを、諸教会の前で彼らにあかししていただきたい。
