¹This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

¹愛する者たちよ。わたしは今この第二の手紙をあなたがたに書きおくり、これらの手紙によって記憶を呼び起し、あなたがたの純真な心を奮い立たせようとした。

²That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

²それは、聖なる預言者たちがあらかじめ語った言葉と、あなたがたの使徒たちが伝えた主なる救主の戒めとを、思い出させるためである。

³Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

³まず次のことを知るべきである。終りの時にあざける者たちが、あざけりながら出てきて、自分の欲情のままに生活し、

⁴And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

⁴「主の来臨の約束はどうなったのか。先祖たちが眠りについてから、すべてのものは天地創造の初めからそのままであって、変ってはいない」と言うであろう。

⁵For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

⁵すなわち、彼らはこのことを認めようとはしない。古い昔に天が存在し、地は神の言によって、水がもとになり、また、水によって成ったのであるが、

⁶Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

⁶その時の世界は、御言により水でおおわれて滅んでしまった。

⁷But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

⁷しかし、今の天と地とは、同じ御言によって保存され、不信仰な人々がさばかれ、滅ぼさるべき日に火で焼かれる時まで、そのまま保たれているのである。

⁸But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

⁸愛する者たちよ。この一事を忘れてはならない。主にあっては、一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようである。

⁹The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

⁹ある人々がおそいと思っているように、主は約束の実行をおそくしておられるのではない。ただ、ひとりも滅びることがなく、すべての者が悔改めに至ることを望み、あなたがたに対してながく忍耐しておられるのである。

¹⁰But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

¹⁰しかし、主の日は盗人のように襲って来る。その日には、天は大音響をたてて消え去り、天体は焼けてくずれ、地とその上に造り出されたものも、みな焼きつくされるであろう。

¹¹Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

¹¹このように、これらはみなくずれ落ちていくものであるから、神の日の到来を熱心に待ち望んでいるあなたがたは、

¹²Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

¹²極力、きよく信心深い行いをしていなければならない。その日には、天は燃えくずれ、天体は焼けうせてしまう。

¹³Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

¹³しかし、わたしたちは、神の約束に従って、義の住む新しい天と新しい地とを待ち望んでいる。

¹⁴Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

¹⁴愛する者たちよ。それだから、この日を待っているあなたがたは、しみもなくきずもなく、安らかな心で、神のみまえに出られるように励みなさい。

¹⁵And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

¹⁵また、わたしたちの主の寛容は救のためであると思いなさい。このことは、わたしたちの愛する兄弟パウロが、彼に与えられた知恵によって、あなたがたに書きおくったとおりである。

¹⁶As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

¹⁶彼は、どの手紙にもこれらのことを述べている。その手紙の中には、ところどころ、わかりにくい箇所もあって、無学で心の定まらない者たちは、ほかの聖書についてもしているように、無理な解釈をほどこして、自分の滅亡を招いている。

¹⁷Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

¹⁷愛する者たちよ。それだから、あなたがたはかねてから心がけているように、非道の者の惑わしに誘い込まれて、あなたがた自身の確信を失うことのないように心がけなさい。そして、わたしたちの主また救主イエス・キリストの恵みと知識とにおいて、ますます豊かになりなさい。栄光が、今も、また永遠の日に至るまでも、主にあるように、アァメン。

¹⁸But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

¹⁸そして、わたしたちの主また救主イエス・キリストの恵みと知識とにおいて、ますます豊かになりなさい。栄光が、今も、また永遠の日に至るまでも、主にあるように、アァメン。
