¹And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

¹さて、ある人たちがユダヤから下ってきて、兄弟たちに「あなたがたも、モーセの慣例にしたがって割礼を受けなければ、救われない」と、説いていた。

²When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

²そこで、パウロやバルナバと彼らとの間に、少なからぬ紛糾と争論とが生じたので、パウロ、バルナバそのほか数人の者がエルサレムに上り、使徒たちや長老たちと、この問題について協議することになった。

³And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

³彼らは教会の人々に見送られ、ピニケ、サマリヤをとおって、道すがら、異邦人たちの改宗の模様をくわしく説明し、すべての兄弟たちを大いに喜ばせた。

⁴And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

⁴エルサレムに着くと、彼らは教会と使徒たち、長老たちに迎えられて、神が彼らと共にいてなされたことを、ことごとく報告した。

⁵But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

⁵ところが、パリサイ派から信仰にはいってきた人たちが立って、「異邦人にも割礼を施し、またモーセの律法を守らせるべきである」と主張した。

⁶And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

⁶そこで、使徒たちや長老たちが、この問題について審議するために集まった。

⁷And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

⁷激しい争論があった後、ペテロが立って言った、「兄弟たちよ、ご承知のとおり、異邦人がわたしの口から福音の言葉を聞いて信じるようにと、神は初めのころに、諸君の中からわたしをお選びになったのである。

⁸And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

⁸そして、人の心をご存じである神は、聖霊をわれわれに賜わったと同様に彼らにも賜わって、彼らに対してあかしをなし、

⁹And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

⁹また、その信仰によって彼らの心をきよめ、われわれと彼らとの間に、なんの分けへだてもなさらなかった。

¹⁰Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

¹⁰しかるに、諸君はなぜ、今われわれの先祖もわれわれ自身も、負いきれなかったくびきをあの弟子たちの首にかけて、神を試みるのか。

¹¹But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

¹¹確かに、主イエスのめぐみによって、われわれは救われるのだと信じるが、彼らとても同様である」。

¹²Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

¹²すると、全会衆は黙ってしまった。それから、バルナバとパウロとが、彼らをとおして異邦人の間に神が行われた数々のしるしと奇跡のことを、説明するのを聞いた。

¹³And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:

¹³ふたりが語り終えた後、ヤコブはそれに応じて述べた、「兄弟たちよ、わたしの意見を聞いていただきたい。

¹⁴Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

¹⁴神が初めに異邦人たちを顧みて、その中から御名を負う民を選び出された次第は、シメオンがすでに説明した。

¹⁵And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

¹⁵預言者たちの言葉も、それと一致している。すなわち、こう書いてある、

¹⁶After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

¹⁶『その後、わたしは帰ってきて、倒れたダビデの幕屋を建てかえ、くずれた箇所を修理し、それを立て直そう。

¹⁷That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

¹⁷残っている人々も、わたしの名を唱えているすべての異邦人も、主を尋ね求めるようになるためである。

¹⁸Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

¹⁸世の初めからこれらの事を知らせておられる主が、こう仰せになった』。

¹⁹Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

¹⁹そこで、わたしの意見では、異邦人の中から神に帰依している人たちに、わずらいをかけてはいけない。

²⁰But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

²⁰ただ、偶像に供えて汚れた物と、不品行と、絞め殺したものと、血とを、避けるようにと、彼らに書き送ることにしたい。

²¹For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

²¹古い時代から、どの町にもモーセの律法を宣べ伝える者がいて、安息日ごとにそれを諸会堂で朗読するならわしであるから」。

²²Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

²²そこで、使徒たちや長老たちは、全教会と協議した末、お互の中から人々を選んで、パウロやバルナバと共に、アンテオケに派遣することに決めた。選ばれたのは、バルサバというユダとシラスとであったが、いずれも兄弟たちの間で重んじられていた人たちであった。

²³And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.

²³この人たちに託された書面はこうである。「あなたがたの兄弟である使徒および長老たちから、アンテオケ、シリヤ、キリキヤにいる異邦人の兄弟がたに、あいさつを送る。

²⁴Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

²⁴こちらから行ったある者たちが、わたしたちからの指示もないのに、いろいろなことを言って、あなたがたを騒がせ、あなたがたの心を乱したと伝え聞いた。

²⁵It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

²⁵そこで、わたしたちは人々を選んで、愛するバルナバおよびパウロと共に、あなたがたのもとに派遣することに、衆議一決した。

²⁶Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁶このふたりは、われらの主イエス・キリストの名のために、その命を投げ出した人々であるが、

²⁷We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

²⁷彼らと共に、ユダとシラスとを派遣する次第である。この人たちは、あなたがたに、同じ趣旨のことを、口頭でも伝えるであろう。

²⁸For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

²⁸すなわち、聖霊とわたしたちとは、次の必要事項のほかは、どんな負担をも、あなたがたに負わせないことに決めた。

²⁹That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

²⁹それは、偶像に供えたものと、血と、絞め殺したものと、不品行とを、避けるということである。これらのものから遠ざかっておれば、それでよろしい。以上」。

³⁰So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:

³⁰さて、一行は人々に見送られて、アンテオケに下って行き、会衆を集めて、その書面を手渡した。

³¹Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

³¹人々はそれを読んで、その勧めの言葉をよろこんだ。

³²And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

³²ユダとシラスとは共に預言者であったので、多くの言葉をもって兄弟たちを励まし、また力づけた。

³³And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

³³ふたりは、しばらくの時を、そこで過ごした後、兄弟たちから、旅の平安を祈られて、見送りを受け、自分らを派遣した人々のところに帰って行った。〔

³⁴Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

³⁴しかし、シラスだけは、引きつづきとどまることにした。〕

³⁵Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

³⁵パウロとバルナバとはアンテオケに滞在をつづけて、ほかの多くの人たちと共に、主の言葉を教えかつ宣べ伝えた。

³⁶And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the LORD, and see how they do.

³⁶幾日かの後、パウロはバルナバに言った、「さあ、前に主の言葉を伝えたすべての町々にいる兄弟たちを、また訪問して、みんながどうしているかを見てこようではないか」。

³⁷And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

³⁷そこで、バルナバはマルコというヨハネも一緒に連れて行くつもりでいた。

³⁸But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

³⁸しかし、パウロは、前にパンフリヤで一行から離れて、働きを共にしなかったような者は、連れて行かないがよいと考えた。

³⁹And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

³⁹こうして激論が起り、その結果ふたりは互に別れ別れになり、バルナバはマルコを連れてクプロに渡って行き、

⁴⁰And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

⁴⁰パウロはシラスを選び、兄弟たちから主の恵みにゆだねられて、出発した。そしてパウロは、シリヤ、キリキヤの地方をとおって、諸教会を力づけた。

⁴¹And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
