¹Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

¹一行は、アムピポリスとアポロニヤとをとおって、テサロニケに行った。ここにはユダヤ人の会堂があった。

²And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

²パウロは例によって、その会堂にはいって行って、三つの安息日にわたり、聖書に基いて彼らと論じ、

³Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

³キリストは必ず苦難を受け、そして死人の中からよみがえるべきこと、また「わたしがあなたがたに伝えているこのイエスこそは、キリストである」とのことを、説明もし論証もした。

⁴And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

⁴ある人たちは納得がいって、パウロとシラスにしたがった。その中には、信心深いギリシヤ人が多数あり、貴婦人たちも少なくなかった。

⁵But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

⁵ところが、ユダヤ人たちは、それをねたんで、町をぶらついているならず者らを集めて暴動を起し、町を騒がせた。それからヤソンの家を襲い、ふたりを民衆の前にひっぱり出そうと、しきりに捜した。

⁶And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

⁶しかし、ふたりが見つからないので、ヤソンと兄弟たち数人を、市の当局者のところに引きずって行き、叫んで言った、「天下をかき回してきたこの人たちが、ここにもはいり込んでいます。

⁷Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

⁷その人たちをヤソンが自分の家に迎え入れました。この連中は、みなカイザルの詔勅にそむいて行動し、イエスという別の王がいるなどと言っています」。

⁸And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

⁸これを聞いて、群衆と市の当局者は不安に感じた。

⁹And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

⁹そして、ヤソンやほかの者たちから、保証金を取った上、彼らを釈放した。

¹⁰And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

¹⁰そこで、兄弟たちはただちに、パウロとシラスとを、夜の間にベレヤへ送り出した。ふたりはベレヤに到着すると、ユダヤ人の会堂に行った。

¹¹These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

¹¹ここにいるユダヤ人はテサロニケの者たちよりも素直であって、心から教を受けいれ、果してそのとおりかどうかを知ろうとして、日々聖書を調べていた。

¹²Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

¹²そういうわけで、彼らのうちの多くの者が信者になった。また、ギリシヤの貴婦人や男子で信じた者も、少なくなかった。

¹³But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

¹³テサロニケのユダヤ人たちは、パウロがベレヤでも神の言を伝えていることを知り、そこにも押しかけてきて、群衆を煽動して騒がせた。

¹⁴And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

¹⁴そこで、兄弟たちは、ただちにパウロを送り出して、海べまで行かせ、シラスとテモテとはベレヤに居残った。

¹⁵And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

¹⁵パウロを案内した人たちは、彼をアテネまで連れて行き、テモテとシラスとになるべく早く来るようにとのパウロの伝言を受けて、帰った。

¹⁶Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

¹⁶さて、パウロはアテネで彼らを待っている間に、市内に偶像がおびただしくあるのを見て、心に憤りを感じた。

¹⁷Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

¹⁷そこで彼は、会堂ではユダヤ人や信心深い人たちと論じ、広場では毎日そこで出会う人々を相手に論じた。

¹⁸Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

¹⁸また、エピクロス派やストア派の哲学者数人も、パウロと議論を戦わせていたが、その中のある者たちが言った、「このおしゃべりは、いったい、何を言おうとしているのか」。また、ほかの者たちは、「あれは、異国の神々を伝えようとしているらしい」と言った。パウロが、イエスと復活とを、宣べ伝えていたからであった。

¹⁹And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

¹⁹そこで、彼らはパウロをアレオパゴスの評議所に連れて行って、「君の語っている新しい教がどんなものか、知らせてもらえまいか。

²⁰For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

²⁰君がなんだか珍らしいことをわれわれに聞かせているので、それがなんの事なのか知りたいと思うのだ」と言った。

²¹(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

²¹いったい、アテネ人もそこに滞在している外国人もみな、何か耳新しいことを話したり聞いたりすることのみに、時を過ごしていたのである。

²²Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

²²そこでパウロは、アレオパゴスの評議所のまん中に立って言った。「アテネの人たちよ、あなたがたは、あらゆる点において、すこぶる宗教心に富んでおられると、わたしは見ている。

²³For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

²³実は、わたしが道を通りながら、あなたがたの拝むいろいろなものを、よく見ているうちに、『知られない神に』と刻まれた祭壇もあるのに気がついた。そこで、あなたがたが知らずに拝んでいるものを、いま知らせてあげよう。

²⁴God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

²⁴この世界と、その中にある万物とを造った神は、天地の主であるのだから、手で造った宮などにはお住みにならない。

²⁵Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁵また、何か不足でもしておるかのように、人の手によって仕えられる必要もない。神は、すべての人々に命と息と万物とを与え、

²⁶And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁶また、ひとりの人から、あらゆる民族を造り出して、地の全面に住まわせ、それぞれに時代を区分し、国土の境界を定めて下さったのである。

²⁷That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

²⁷こうして、人々が熱心に追い求めて捜しさえすれば、神を見いだせるようにして下さった。事実、神はわれわれひとりびとりから遠く離れておいでになるのではない。

²⁸For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

²⁸われわれは神のうちに生き、動き、存在しているからである。あなたがたのある詩人たちも言ったように、『われわれも、確かにその子孫である』。

²⁹Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

²⁹このように、われわれは神の子孫なのであるから、神たる者を、人間の技巧や空想で金や銀や石などに彫り付けたものと同じと、見なすべきではない。

³⁰And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

³⁰神は、このような無知の時代を、これまでは見過ごしにされていたが、今はどこにおる人でも、みな悔い改めなければならないことを命じておられる。

³¹Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

³¹神は、義をもってこの世界をさばくためその日を定め、お選びになったかたによってそれをなし遂げようとされている。すなわち、このかたを死人の中からよみがえらせ、その確証をすべての人に示されたのである」。

³²And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

³²死人のよみがえりのことを聞くと、ある者たちはあざ笑い、またある者たちは、「この事については、いずれまた聞くことにする」と言った。

³³So Paul departed from among them.

³³こうして、パウロは彼らの中から出て行った。しかし、彼にしたがって信じた者も、幾人かあった。その中には、アレオパゴスの裁判人デオヌシオとダマリスという女、また、その他の人々もいた。

³⁴Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

³⁴しかし、彼にしたがって信じた者も、幾人かあった。その中には、アレオパゴスの裁判人デオヌシオとダマリスという女、また、その他の人々もいた。
