¹After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;

¹その後、パウロはアテネを去ってコリントへ行った。

²And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.

²そこで、アクラというポント生れのユダヤ人と、その妻プリスキラとに出会った。クラウデオ帝が、すべてのユダヤ人をローマから退去させるようにと、命令したため、彼らは近ごろイタリヤから出てきたのである。

³And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

³パウロは彼らのところに行ったが、互に同業であったので、その家に住み込んで、一緒に仕事をした。天幕造りがその職業であった。

⁴And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

⁴パウロは安息日ごとに会堂で論じては、ユダヤ人やギリシヤ人の説得に努めた。

⁵And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

⁵シラスとテモテが、マケドニヤから下ってきてからは、パウロは御言を伝えることに専念し、イエスがキリストであることを、ユダヤ人たちに力強くあかしした。

⁶And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean; from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

⁶しかし、彼らがこれに反抗してののしり続けたので、パウロは自分の上着を振りはらって、彼らに言った、「あなたがたの血は、あなたがた自身にかえれ。わたしには責任がない。今からわたしは異邦人の方に行く」。

⁷And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.

⁷こう言って、彼はそこを去り、テテオ・ユストという神を敬う人の家に行った。その家は会堂と隣り合っていた。

⁸And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.

⁸会堂司クリスポは、その家族一同と共に主を信じた。また多くのコリント人も、パウロの話を聞いて信じ、ぞくぞくとバプテスマを受けた。

⁹Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:

⁹すると、ある夜、幻のうちに主がパウロに言われた、「恐れるな。語りつづけよ、黙っているな。

¹⁰For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.

¹⁰あなたには、わたしがついている。だれもあなたを襲って、危害を加えるようなことはない。この町には、わたしの民が大ぜいいる」。

¹¹And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

¹¹パウロは一年六か月の間ここに腰をすえて、神の言を彼らの間に教えつづけた。

¹²And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat,

¹²ところが、ガリオがアカヤの総督であった時、ユダヤ人たちは一緒になってパウロを襲い、彼を法廷にひっぱって行って訴えた、

¹³Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.

¹³「この人は、律法にそむいて神を拝むように、人々をそそのかしています」。

¹⁴And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:

¹⁴パウロが口を開こうとすると、ガリオはユダヤ人たちに言った、「ユダヤ人諸君、何か不法行為とか、悪質の犯罪とかのことなら、わたしは当然、諸君の訴えを取り上げもしようが、

¹⁵But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.

¹⁵これは諸君の言葉や名称や律法に関する問題なのだから、諸君みずから始末するがよかろう。わたしはそんな事の裁判人にはなりたくない」。

¹⁶And he drave them from the judgment seat.

¹⁶こう言って、彼らを法廷から追いはらった。

¹⁷Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

¹⁷そこで、みんなの者は、会堂司ソステネを引き捕え、法廷の前で打ちたたいた。ガリオはそれに対して、そ知らぬ顔をしていた。

¹⁸And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.

¹⁸さてパウロは、なお幾日ものあいだ滞在した後、兄弟たちに別れを告げて、シリヤへ向け出帆した。プリスキラとアクラも同行した。パウロは、かねてから、ある誓願を立てていたので、ケンクレヤで頭をそった。

¹⁹And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

¹⁹一行がエペソに着くと、パウロはふたりをそこに残しておき、自分だけ会堂にはいって、ユダヤ人たちと論じた。

²⁰When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not;

²⁰人々は、パウロにもっと長いあいだ滞在するように願ったが、彼は聞きいれないで、

²¹But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

²¹「神のみこころなら、またあなたがたのところに帰ってこよう」と言って、別れを告げ、エペソから船出した。

²²And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch.

²²それから、カイザリヤで上陸してエルサレムに上り、教会にあいさつしてから、アンテオケに下って行った。

²³And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

²³そこにしばらくいてから、彼はまた出かけ、ガラテヤおよびフルギヤの地方を歴訪して、すべての弟子たちを力づけた。

²⁴And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.

²⁴さて、アレキサンデリヤ生れで、聖書に精通し、しかも、雄弁なアポロというユダヤ人が、エペソにきた。

²⁵This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

²⁵この人は主の道に通じており、また、霊に燃えてイエスのことを詳しく語ったり教えたりしていたが、ただヨハネのバプテスマしか知っていなかった。

²⁶And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

²⁶彼は会堂で大胆に語り始めた。それをプリスキラとアクラとが聞いて、彼を招きいれ、さらに詳しく神の道を解き聞かせた。

²⁷And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:

²⁷それから、アポロがアカヤに渡りたいと思っていたので、兄弟たちは彼を励まし、先方の弟子たちに、彼をよく迎えるようにと、手紙を書き送った。彼は到着して、すでにめぐみによって信者になっていた人たちに、大いに力になった。彼はイエスがキリストであることを、聖書に基いて示し、公然と、ユダヤ人たちを激しい語調で論破したからである。

²⁸For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
