¹And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

¹アポロがコリントにいた時、パウロは奥地をとおってエペソにきた。そして、ある弟子たちに出会って、

²He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

²彼らに「あなたがたは、信仰にはいった時に、聖霊を受けたのか」と尋ねたところ、「いいえ、聖霊なるものがあることさえ、聞いたことがありません」と答えた。

³And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

³「では、だれの名によってバプテスマを受けたのか」と彼がきくと、彼らは「ヨハネの名によるバプテスマを受けました」と答えた。

⁴Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

⁴そこで、パウロが言った、「ヨハネは悔改めのバプテスマを授けたが、それによって、自分のあとに来るかた、すなわち、イエスを信じるように、人々に勧めたのである」。

⁵When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

⁵人々はこれを聞いて、主イエスの名によるバプテスマを受けた。

⁶And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

⁶そして、パウロが彼らの上に手をおくと、聖霊が彼らにくだり、それから彼らは異言を語ったり、預言をしたりし出した。

⁷And all the men were about twelve.

⁷その人たちはみんなで十二人ほどであった。

⁸And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

⁸それから、パウロは会堂にはいって、三か月のあいだ、大胆に神の国について論じ、また勧めをした。

⁹But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

⁹ところが、ある人たちは心をかたくなにして、信じようとせず、会衆の前でこの道をあしざまに言ったので、彼は弟子たちを引き連れて、その人たちから離れ、ツラノの講堂で毎日論じた。

¹⁰And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

¹⁰それが二年間も続いたので、アジヤに住んでいる者は、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人も皆、主の言を聞いた。

¹¹And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

¹¹神は、パウロの手によって、異常な力あるわざを次々になされた。

¹²So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

¹²たとえば、人々が、彼の身につけている手ぬぐいや前掛けを取って病人にあてると、その病気が除かれ、悪霊が出て行くのであった。

¹³Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the LORD Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

¹³そこで、ユダヤ人のまじない師で、遍歴している者たちが、悪霊につかれている者にむかって、主イエスの名をとなえ、「パウロの宣べ伝えているイエスによって命じる。出て行け」と、ためしに言ってみた。

¹⁴And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

¹⁴ユダヤの祭司長スケワという者の七人のむすこたちも、そんなことをしていた。

¹⁵And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

¹⁵すると悪霊がこれに対して言った、「イエスなら自分は知っている。パウロもわかっている。だが、おまえたちは、いったい何者だ」。

¹⁶And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

¹⁶そして、悪霊につかれている人が、彼らに飛びかかり、みんなを押えつけて負かしたので、彼らは傷を負ったまま裸になって、その家を逃げ出した。

¹⁷And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

¹⁷このことがエペソに住むすべてのユダヤ人やギリシヤ人に知れわたって、みんな恐怖に襲われ、そして、主イエスの名があがめられた。

¹⁸And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

¹⁸また信者になった者が大ぜいきて、自分の行為を打ちあけて告白した。

¹⁹Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

¹⁹それから、魔術を行っていた多くの者が、魔術の本を持ち出してきては、みんなの前で焼き捨てた。その値段を総計したところ、銀五万にも上ることがわかった。

²⁰So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

²⁰このようにして、主の言はますます盛んにひろまり、また力を増し加えていった。

²¹After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

²¹これらの事があった後、パウロは御霊に感じて、マケドニヤ、アカヤをとおって、エルサレムへ行く決心をした。そして言った、「わたしは、そこに行ったのち、ぜひローマをも見なければならない」。

²²So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

²²そこで、自分に仕えている者の中から、テモテとエラストとのふたりを、まずマケドニヤに送り出し、パウロ自身は、なおしばらくアジヤにとどまった。

²³And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

²³そのころ、この道について容易ならぬ騒動が起った。

²⁴For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

²⁴そのいきさつは、こうである。デメテリオという銀細工人が、銀でアルテミス神殿の模型を造って、職人たちに少なからぬ利益を得させていた。

²⁵Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

²⁵この男がその職人たちや、同類の仕事をしていた者たちを集めて言った、「諸君、われわれがこの仕事で、金もうけをしていることは、ご承知のとおりだ。

²⁶Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

²⁶しかるに、諸君の見聞きしているように、あのパウロが、手で造られたものは神様ではないなどと言って、エペソばかりか、ほとんどアジヤ全体にわたって、大ぜいの人々を説きつけて誤らせた。

²⁷So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

²⁷これでは、お互の仕事に悪評が立つおそれがあるばかりか、大女神アルテミスの宮も軽んじられ、ひいては全アジヤ、いや全世界が拝んでいるこの大女神のご威光さえも、消えてしまいそうである」。

²⁸And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

²⁸これを聞くと、人々は怒りに燃え、大声で「大いなるかな、エペソ人のアルテミス」と叫びつづけた。

²⁹And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

²⁹そして、町中が大混乱に陥り、人々はパウロの道連れであるマケドニヤ人ガイオとアリスタルコとを捕えて、いっせいに劇場へなだれ込んだ。

³⁰And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

³⁰パウロは群衆の中にはいって行こうとしたが、弟子たちがそれをさせなかった。

³¹And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

³¹アジヤ州の議員で、パウロの友人であった人たちも、彼に使をよこして、劇場にはいって行かないようにと、しきりに頼んだ。

³²Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused: and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

³²中では、集会が混乱に陥ってしまって、ある者はこのことを、ほかの者はあのことを、どなりつづけていたので、大多数の者は、なんのために集まったのかも、わからないでいた。

³³And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

³³そこで、ユダヤ人たちが、前に押し出したアレキサンデルなる者を、群衆の中のある人たちが促したため、彼は手を振って、人々に弁明を試みようとした。

³⁴But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

³⁴ところが、彼がユダヤ人だとわかると、みんなの者がいっせいに「大いなるかな、エペソ人のアルテミス」と二時間ばかりも叫びつづけた。

³⁵And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

³⁵ついに、市の書記役が群衆を押し静めて言った、「エペソの諸君、エペソ市が大女神アルテミスと、天くだったご神体との守護役であることを知らない者が、ひとりでもいるだろうか。

³⁶Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

³⁶これは否定のできない事実であるから、諸君はよろしく静かにしているべきで、乱暴な行動は、いっさいしてはならない。

³⁷For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

³⁷諸君はこの人たちをここにひっぱってきたが、彼らは宮を荒す者でも、われわれの女神をそしる者でもない。

³⁸Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

³⁸だから、もしデメテリオなりその職人仲間なりが、だれかに対して訴え事があるなら、裁判の日はあるし、総督もいるのだから、それぞれ訴え出るがよい。

³⁹But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

³⁹しかし、何かもっと要求したい事があれば、それは正式の議会で解決してもらうべきだ。

⁴⁰For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

⁴⁰きょうの事件については、この騒ぎを弁護できるような理由が全くないのだから、われわれは治安をみだす罪に問われるおそれがある」。こう言って、彼はこの集会を解散させた。

⁴¹And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
