¹Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

¹「兄弟たち、父たちよ、いま申し上げるわたしの弁明を聞いていただきたい」。

²(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

²パウロが、ヘブル語でこう語りかけるのを聞いて、人々はますます静粛になった。

³I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

³そこで彼は言葉をついで言った、「わたしはキリキヤのタルソで生れたユダヤ人であるが、この都で育てられ、ガマリエルのひざもとで先祖伝来の律法について、きびしい薫陶を受け、今日の皆さんと同じく神に対して熱心な者であった。

⁴And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

⁴そして、この道を迫害し、男であれ女であれ、縛りあげて獄に投じ、彼らを死に至らせた。

⁵As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

⁵このことは、大祭司も長老たち一同も、証明するところである。さらにわたしは、この人たちからダマスコの同志たちへあてた手紙をもらって、その地にいる者たちを縛りあげ、エルサレムにひっぱってきて、処罰するため、出かけて行った。

⁶And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

⁶旅をつづけてダマスコの近くにきた時に、真昼ごろ、突然、つよい光が天からわたしをめぐり照した。

⁷And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁷わたしは地に倒れた。そして、『サウロ、サウロ、なぜわたしを迫害するのか』と、呼びかける声を聞いた。

⁸And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

⁸これに対してわたしは、『主よ、あなたはどなたですか』と言った。すると、その声が、『わたしは、あなたが迫害しているナザレ人イエスである』と答えた。

⁹And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

⁹わたしと一緒にいた者たちは、その光は見たが、わたしに語りかけたかたの声は聞かなかった。

¹⁰And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

¹⁰わたしが『主よ、わたしは何をしたらよいでしょうか』と尋ねたところ、主は言われた、『起きあがってダマスコに行きなさい。そうすれば、あなたがするように決めてある事が、すべてそこで告げられるであろう』。

¹¹And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

¹¹わたしは、光の輝きで目がくらみ、何も見えなくなっていたので、連れの者たちに手を引かれながら、ダマスコに行った。

¹²And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

¹²すると、律法に忠実で、ダマスコ在住のユダヤ人全体に評判のよいアナニヤという人が、

¹³Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

¹³わたしのところにきて、そばに立ち、『兄弟サウロよ、見えるようになりなさい』と言った。するとその瞬間に、わたしの目が開いて、彼の姿が見えた。

¹⁴And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

¹⁴彼は言った、『わたしたちの先祖の神が、あなたを選んでみ旨を知らせ、かの義人を見させ、その口から声をお聞かせになった。

¹⁵For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

¹⁵それはあなたが、その見聞きした事につき、すべての人に対して、彼の証人になるためである。

¹⁶And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

¹⁶そこで今、なんのためらうことがあろうか。すぐ立って、み名をとなえてバプテスマを受け、あなたの罪を洗い落しなさい』。

¹⁷And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

¹⁷それからわたしは、エルサレムに帰って宮で祈っているうちに、夢うつつになり、

¹⁸And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

¹⁸主にまみえたが、主は言われた、『急いで、すぐにエルサレムを出て行きなさい。わたしについてのあなたのあかしを、人々が受けいれないから』。

¹⁹And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

¹⁹そこで、わたしが言った、『主よ、彼らは、わたしがいたるところの会堂で、あなたを信じる人々を獄に投じたり、むち打ったりしていたことを、知っています。

²⁰And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

²⁰また、あなたの証人ステパノの血が流された時も、わたしは立ち合っていてそれに賛成し、また彼を殺した人たちの上着の番をしていたのです』。

²¹And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

²¹すると、主がわたしに言われた、『行きなさい。わたしが、あなたを遠く異邦の民へつかわすのだ』」。

²²And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

²²彼の言葉をここまで聞いていた人々は、このとき、声を張りあげて言った、「こんな男は地上から取り除いてしまえ。生かしおくべきではない」。

²³And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

²³人々がこうわめき立てて、空中に上着を投げ、ちりをまき散らす始末であったので、

²⁴The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

²⁴千卒長はパウロを兵営に引き入れるように命じ、どういうわけで、彼に対してこんなにわめき立てているのかを確かめるため、彼をむちの拷問にかけて、取り調べるように言いわたした。

²⁵And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

²⁵彼らがむちを当てるため、彼を縛りつけていた時、パウロはそばに立っている百卒長に言った、「ローマの市民たる者を、裁判にかけもしないで、むち打ってよいのか」。

²⁶When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

²⁶百卒長はこれを聞き、千卒長のところに行って報告し、そして言った、「どうなさいますか。あの人はローマの市民なのです」。

²⁷Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

²⁷そこで、千卒長がパウロのところにきて言った、「わたしに言ってくれ。あなたはローマの市民なのか」。パウロは「そうです」と言った。

²⁸And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

²⁸これに対して千卒長が言った、「わたしはこの市民権を、多額の金で買い取ったのだ」。するとパウロは言った、「わたしは生れながらの市民です」。

²⁹Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

²⁹そこで、パウロを取り調べようとしていた人たちは、ただちに彼から身を引いた。千卒長も、パウロがローマの市民であること、また、そういう人を縛っていたことがわかって、恐れた。翌日、彼は、ユダヤ人がなぜパウロを訴え出たのか、その真相を知ろうと思って彼を解いてやり、同時に祭司長たちと全議会とを召集させ、そこに彼を引き出して、彼らの前に立たせた。

³⁰On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

³⁰翌日、彼は、ユダヤ人がなぜパウロを訴え出たのか、その真相を知ろうと思って彼を解いてやり、同時に祭司長たちと全議会とを召集させ、そこに彼を引き出して、彼らの前に立たせた。
