¹And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

¹パウロは議会を見つめて言った、「兄弟たちよ、わたしは今日まで、神の前に、ひたすら明らかな良心にしたがって行動してきた」。

²And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

²すると、大祭司アナニヤが、パウロのそばに立っている者たちに、彼の口を打てと命じた。

³Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

³そのとき、パウロはアナニヤにむかって言った、「白く塗られた壁よ、神があなたを打つであろう。あなたは、律法にしたがって、わたしをさばくために座についているのに、律法にそむいて、わたしを打つことを命じるのか」。

⁴And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

⁴すると、そばに立っている者たちが言った、「神の大祭司に対して無礼なことを言うのか」。

⁵Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

⁵パウロは言った、「兄弟たちよ、彼が大祭司だとは知らなかった。聖書に『民のかしらを悪く言ってはいけない』と、書いてあるのだった」。

⁶But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

⁶パウロは、議員の一部がサドカイ人であり、一部はパリサイ人であるのを見て、議会の中で声を高めて言った、「兄弟たちよ、わたしはパリサイ人であり、パリサイ人の子である。わたしは、死人の復活の望みをいだいていることで、裁判を受けているのである」。

⁷And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

⁷彼がこう言ったところ、パリサイ人とサドカイ人との間に争論が生じ、会衆が相分れた。

⁸For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

⁸元来、サドカイ人は、復活とか天使とか霊とかは、いっさい存在しないと言い、パリサイ人は、それらは、みな存在すると主張している。

⁹And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

⁹そこで、大騒ぎとなった。パリサイ派のある律法学者たちが立って、強く主張して言った、「われわれは、この人には何も悪いことがないと思う。あるいは、霊か天使かが、彼に告げたのかも知れない」。

¹⁰And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

¹⁰こうして、争論が激しくなったので、千卒長は、パウロが彼らに引き裂かれるのを気づかって、兵卒どもに、降りて行ってパウロを彼らの中から力づくで引き出し、兵営に連れて来るように、命じた。

¹¹And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

¹¹その夜、主がパウロに臨んで言われた、「しっかりせよ。あなたは、エルサレムでわたしのことをあかししたように、ローマでもあかしをしなくてはならない」。

¹²And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

¹²夜が明けると、ユダヤ人らは申し合わせをして、パウロを殺すまでは飲食をいっさい断つと、誓い合った。

¹³And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

¹³この陰謀に加わった者は、四十人あまりであった。

¹⁴And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

¹⁴彼らは、祭司長たちや長老たちのところに行って、こう言った。「われわれは、パウロを殺すまでは何も食べないと、堅く誓い合いました。

¹⁵Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

¹⁵ついては、あなたがたは議会と組んで、彼のことでなお詳しく取調べをするように見せかけ、パウロをあなたがたのところに連れ出すように、千卒長に頼んで下さい。われわれとしては、パウロがそこにこないうちに殺してしまう手はずをしています」。

¹⁶And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

¹⁶ところが、パウロの姉妹の子が、この待伏せのことを耳にし、兵営にはいって行って、パウロにそれを知らせた。

¹⁷Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

¹⁷そこでパウロは、百卒長のひとりを呼んで言った、「この若者を千卒長のところに連れて行ってください。何か報告することがあるようですから」。

¹⁸So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

¹⁸この百卒長は若者を連れて行き、千卒長に引きあわせて言った、「囚人のパウロが、この若者があなたに話したいことがあるので、あなたのところに連れて行ってくれるようにと、わたしを呼んで頼みました」。

¹⁹Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

¹⁹そこで千卒長は、若者の手を取り、人のいないところへ連れて行って尋ねた、「わたしに話したいことというのは、何か」。

²⁰And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

²⁰若者が言った、「ユダヤ人たちが、パウロのことをもっと詳しく取調べをすると見せかけて、あす議会に彼を連れ出すように、あなたに頼むことに決めています。

²¹But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

²¹どうぞ、彼らの頼みを取り上げないで下さい。四十人あまりの者が、パウロを待伏せしているのです。彼らは、パウロを殺すまでは飲食をいっさい断つと、堅く誓い合っています。そして、いま手はずをととのえて、あなたの許可を待っているところなのです」。

²²So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

²²そこで千卒長は、「このことをわたしに知らせたことは、だれにも口外するな」と命じて、若者を帰した。

²³And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

²³それから彼は、百卒長ふたりを呼んで言った、「歩兵二百名、騎兵七十名、槍兵二百名を、カイザリヤに向け出発できるように、今夜九時までに用意せよ。

²⁴And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

²⁴また、パウロを乗せるために馬を用意して、彼を総督ペリクスのもとへ無事に連れて行け」。

²⁵And he wrote a letter after this manner:

²⁵さらに彼は、次のような文面の手紙を書いた。

²⁶Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

²⁶「クラウデオ・ルシヤ、つつしんで総督ペリクス閣下の平安を祈ります。

²⁷This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

²⁷本人のパウロが、ユダヤ人らに捕えられ、まさに殺されようとしていたのを、彼のローマ市民であることを知ったので、わたしは兵卒たちを率いて行って、彼を救い出しました。

²⁸And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

²⁸それから、彼が訴えられた理由を知ろうと思い、彼を議会に連れて行きました。

²⁹Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

²⁹ところが、彼はユダヤ人の律法の問題で訴えられたものであり、なんら死刑または投獄に当る罪のないことがわかりました。

³⁰And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

³⁰しかし、この人に対して陰謀がめぐらされているとの報告がありましたので、わたしは取りあえず、彼を閣下のもとにお送りすることにし、訴える者たちには、閣下の前で、彼に対する申立てをするようにと、命じておきました」。

³¹Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

³¹そこで歩兵たちは、命じられたとおりパウロを引き取って、夜の間にアンテパトリスまで連れて行き、

³²On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

³²翌日は、騎兵たちにパウロを護送させることにして、兵営に帰って行った。

³³Who, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

³³騎兵たちは、カイザリヤに着くと、手紙を総督に手渡し、さらにパウロを彼に引きあわせた。

³⁴And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

³⁴総督は手紙を読んでから、パウロに、どの州の者かと尋ね、キリキヤの出だと知って、「訴え人たちがきた時に、おまえを調べることにする」と言った。そして、ヘロデの官邸に彼を守っておくように命じた。

³⁵I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
