¹Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.

¹さて、フェストは、任地に着いてから三日の後、カイザリヤからエルサレムに上ったところ、

²Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

²祭司長たちやユダヤ人の重立った者たちが、パウロを訴え出て、

³And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.

³彼をエルサレムに呼び出すよう取り計らっていただきたいと、しきりに願った。彼らは途中で待ち伏せして、彼を殺す考えであった。

⁴But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.

⁴ところがフェストは、パウロがカイザリヤに監禁してあり、自分もすぐそこへ帰ることになっていると答え、

⁵Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

⁵そして言った、「では、もしあの男に何か不都合なことがあるなら、おまえたちのうちの有力者らが、わたしと一緒に下って行って、訴えるがよかろう」。

⁶And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.

⁶フェストは、彼らのあいだに八日か十日ほど滞在した後、カイザリヤに下って行き、その翌日、裁判の席について、パウロを引き出すように命じた。

⁷And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.

⁷パウロが姿をあらわすと、エルサレムから下ってきたユダヤ人たちが、彼を取りかこみ、彼に対してさまざまの重い罪状を申し立てたが、いずれもその証拠をあげることはできなかった。

⁸While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.

⁸パウロは「わたしは、ユダヤ人の律法に対しても、宮に対しても、またカイザルに対しても、なんら罪を犯したことはない」と弁明した。

⁹But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?

⁹ところが、フェストはユダヤ人の歓心を買おうと思って、パウロにむかって言った、「おまえはエルサレムに上り、この事件に関し、わたしからそこで裁判を受けることを承知するか」。

¹⁰Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

¹⁰パウロは言った、「わたしは今、カイザルの法廷に立っています。わたしはこの法廷で裁判されるべきです。よくご承知のとおり、わたしはユダヤ人たちに、何も悪いことをしてはいません。

¹¹For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.

¹¹もしわたしが悪いことをし、死に当るようなことをしているのなら、死を免れようとはしません。しかし、もし彼らの訴えることに、なんの根拠もないとすれば、だれもわたしを彼らに引き渡す権利はありません。わたしはカイザルに上訴します」。

¹²Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.

¹²そこでフェストは、陪席の者たちと協議したうえ答えた、「おまえはカイザルに上訴を申し出た。カイザルのところに行くがよい」。

¹³And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus.

¹³数日たった後、アグリッパ王とベルニケとが、フェストに敬意を表するため、カイザリヤにきた。

¹⁴And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:

¹⁴ふたりは、そこに何日間も滞在していたので、フェストは、パウロのことを王に話して言った、「ここに、ペリクスが囚人として残して行ったひとりの男がいる。

¹⁵About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.

¹⁵わたしがエルサレムに行った時、この男のことを、祭司長たちやユダヤ人の長老たちが、わたしに報告し、彼を罪に定めるようにと要求した。

¹⁶To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.

¹⁶そこでわたしは、彼らに答えた、『訴えられた者が、訴えた者の前に立って、告訴に対し弁明する機会を与えられない前に、その人を見放してしまうのは、ローマ人の慣例にはないことである』。

¹⁷Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.

¹⁷それで、彼らがここに集まってきた時、わたしは時をうつさず、次の日に裁判の席について、その男を引き出させた。

¹⁸Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:

¹⁸訴えた者たちは立ち上がったが、わたしが推測していたような悪事は、彼について何一つ申し立てはしなかった。

¹⁹But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

¹⁹ただ、彼と争い合っているのは、彼ら自身の宗教に関し、また、死んでしまったのに生きているとパウロが主張しているイエスなる者に関する問題に過ぎない。

²⁰And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.

²⁰これらの問題を、どう取り扱ってよいかわからなかったので、わたしは彼に、『エルサレムに行って、これらの問題について、そこでさばいてもらいたくはないか』と尋ねてみた。

²¹But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.

²¹ところがパウロは、皇帝の判決を受ける時まで、このまま自分をとどめておいてほしいと言うので、カイザルに彼を送りとどける時までとどめておくようにと、命じておいた」。

²²Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.

²²そこで、アグリッパがフェストに「わたしも、その人の言い分を聞いて見たい」と言ったので、フェストは、「では、あす彼から聞きとるようにしてあげよう」と答えた。

²³And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.

²³翌日、アグリッパとベルニケとは、大いに威儀をととのえて、千卒長たちや市の重立った人たちと共に、引見所にはいってきた。すると、フェストの命によって、パウロがそこに引き出された。

²⁴And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

²⁴そこで、フェストが言った、「アグリッパ王、ならびにご臨席の諸君。ごらんになっているこの人物は、ユダヤ人たちがこぞって、エルサレムにおいても、また、この地においても、これ以上、生かしておくべきでないと叫んで、わたしに訴え出ている者である。

²⁵But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

²⁵しかし、彼は死に当ることは何もしていないと、わたしは見ているのだが、彼自身が皇帝に上訴すると言い出したので、彼をそちらへ送ることに決めた。

²⁶Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.

²⁶ところが、彼について、主君に書きおくる確かなものが何もないので、わたしは、彼を諸君の前に、特に、アグリッパ王よ、あなたの前に引き出して、取調べをしたのち、上書すべき材料を得ようと思う。囚人を送るのに、その告訴の理由を示さないということは、不合理だと思えるからである」。

²⁷For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.
