¹Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:

¹アグリッパはパウロに、「おまえ自身のことを話してもよい」と言った。そこでパウロは、手をさし伸べて、弁明をし始めた。

²I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

²「アグリッパ王よ、ユダヤ人たちから訴えられているすべての事に関して、きょう、あなたの前で弁明することになったのは、わたしのしあわせに思うところであります。

³Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

³あなたは、ユダヤ人のあらゆる慣例や問題を、よく知り抜いておられるかたですから、わたしの申すことを、寛大なお心で聞いていただきたいのです。

⁴My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;

⁴さて、わたしは若い時代には、初めから自国民の中で、またエルサレムで過ごしたのですが、そのころのわたしの生活ぶりは、ユダヤ人がみんなよく知っているところです。

⁵Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

⁵彼らはわたしを初めから知っているので、証言しようと思えばできるのですが、わたしは、わたしたちの宗教の最も厳格な派にしたがって、パリサイ人としての生活をしていたのです。

⁶And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God, unto our fathers:

⁶今わたしは、神がわたしたちの先祖に約束なさった希望をいだいているために、裁判を受けているのであります。

⁷Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.

⁷わたしたちの十二の部族は、夜昼、熱心に神に仕えて、その約束を得ようと望んでいるのです。王よ、この希望のために、わたしはユダヤ人から訴えられています。

⁸Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

⁸神が死人をよみがえらせるということが、あなたがたには、どうして信じられないことと思えるのでしょうか。

⁹I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

⁹わたし自身も、以前には、ナザレ人イエスの名に逆らって反対の行動をすべきだと、思っていました。

¹⁰Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.

¹⁰そしてわたしは、それをエルサレムで敢行し、祭司長たちから権限を与えられて、多くの聖徒たちを獄に閉じ込め、彼らが殺される時には、それに賛成の意を表しました。

¹¹And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

¹¹それから、いたるところの会堂で、しばしば彼らを罰して、無理やりに神をけがす言葉を言わせようとし、彼らに対してひどく荒れ狂い、ついに外国の町々にまで、迫害の手をのばすに至りました。

¹²Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

¹²こうして、わたしは、祭司長たちから権限と委任とを受けて、ダマスコに行ったのですが、

¹³At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.

¹³王よ、その途中、真昼に、光が天からさして来るのを見ました。それは、太陽よりも、もっと光り輝いて、わたしと同行者たちとをめぐり照しました。

¹⁴And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

¹⁴わたしたちはみな地に倒れましたが、その時ヘブル語でわたしにこう呼びかける声を聞きました、『サウロ、サウロ、なぜわたしを迫害するのか。とげのあるむちをければ、傷を負うだけである』。

¹⁵And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

¹⁵そこで、わたしが『主よ、あなたはどなたですか』と尋ねると、主は言われた、『わたしは、あなたが迫害しているイエスである。

¹⁶But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

¹⁶さあ、起きあがって、自分の足で立ちなさい。わたしがあなたに現れたのは、あなたがわたしに会った事と、あなたに現れて示そうとしている事とをあかしし、これを伝える務に、あなたを任じるためである。

¹⁷Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

¹⁷わたしは、この国民と異邦人との中から、あなたを救い出し、あらためてあなたを彼らにつかわすが、

¹⁸To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

¹⁸それは、彼らの目を開き、彼らをやみから光へ、悪魔の支配から神のみもとへ帰らせ、また、彼らが罪のゆるしを得、わたしを信じる信仰によって、聖別された人々に加わるためである』。

¹⁹Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:

¹⁹それですから、アグリッパ王よ、わたしは天よりの啓示にそむかず、

²⁰But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

²⁰まず初めにダマスコにいる人々に、それからエルサレムにいる人々、さらにユダヤ全土、ならびに異邦人たちに、悔い改めて神に立ち帰り、悔改めにふさわしいわざを行うようにと、説き勧めました。

²¹For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.

²¹そのために、ユダヤ人は、わたしを宮で引き捕えて殺そうとしたのです。

²²Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

²²しかし、わたしは今日に至るまで神の加護を受け、このように立って、小さい者にも大きい者にもあかしをなし、預言者たちやモーセが、今後起るべきだと語ったことを、そのまま述べてきました。

²³That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

²³すなわち、キリストが苦難を受けること、また、死人の中から最初によみがえって、この国民と異邦人とに、光を宣べ伝えるに至ることを、あかししたのです」。

²⁴And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.

²⁴パウロがこのように弁明をしていると、フェストは大声で言った、「パウロよ、おまえは気が狂っている。博学が、おまえを狂わせている」。

²⁵But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.

²⁵パウロが言った、「フェスト閣下よ、わたしは気が狂ってはいません。わたしは、まじめな真実の言葉を語っているだけです。

²⁶For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.

²⁶王はこれらのことをよく知っておられるので、王に対しても、率直に申し上げているのです。それは、片すみで行われたのではないのですから、一つとして、王が見のがされたことはないと信じます。

²⁷King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

²⁷アグリッパ王よ、あなたは預言者を信じますか。信じておられると思います」。

²⁸Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

²⁸アグリッパがパウロに言った、「おまえは少し説いただけで、わたしをクリスチャンにしようとしている」。

²⁹And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

²⁹パウロが言った、「説くことが少しであろうと、多くであろうと、わたしが神に祈るのは、ただあなただけでなく、きょう、わたしの言葉を聞いた人もみな、わたしのようになって下さることです。このような鎖は別ですが」。

³⁰And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:

³⁰それから、王も総督もベルニケも、また列席の人々も、みな立ちあがった。

³¹And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

³¹退場してから、互に語り合って言った、「あの人は、死や投獄に当るようなことをしてはいない」。そして、アグリッパがフェストに言った、「あの人は、カイザルに上訴していなかったら、ゆるされたであろうに」。

³²Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.
