¹And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.

¹さて、わたしたちが、舟でイタリヤに行くことが決まった時、パウロとそのほか数人の囚人とは、近衛隊の百卒長ユリアスに託された。

²And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

²そしてわたしたちは、アジヤ沿岸の各所に寄港することになっているアドラミテオの舟に乗り込んで、出帆した。テサロニケのマケドニヤ人アリスタルコも同行した。

³And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

³次の日、シドンに入港したが、ユリアスは、パウロを親切に取り扱い、友人をおとずれてかんたいを受けることを、許した。

⁴And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

⁴それからわたしたちは、ここから船出したが、逆風にあったので、クプロの島かげを航行し、

⁵And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

⁵キリキヤとパンフリヤの沖を過ぎて、ルキヤのミラに入港した。

⁶And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

⁶そこに、イタリヤ行きのアレキサンドリヤの舟があったので、百卒長は、わたしたちをその舟に乗り込ませた。

⁷And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

⁷幾日ものあいだ、舟の進みがおそくて、わたしたちは、かろうじてクニドの沖合にきたが、風がわたしたちの行く手をはばむので、サルモネの沖、クレテの島かげを航行し、

⁸And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

⁸その岸に沿って進み、かろうじて「良き港」と呼ばれる所に着いた。その近くにラサヤの町があった。

⁹Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

⁹長い時が経過し、断食期も過ぎてしまい、すでに航海が危険な季節になったので、パウロは人々に警告して言った、

¹⁰And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

¹⁰「皆さん、わたしの見るところでは、この航海では、積荷や船体ばかりでなく、われわれの生命にも、危害と大きな損失が及ぶであろう」。

¹¹Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

¹¹しかし百卒長は、パウロの意見よりも、船長や船主の方を信頼した。

¹²And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

¹²なお、この港は冬を過ごすのに適しないので、大多数の者は、ここから出て、できればなんとかして、南西と北西とに面しているクレテのピニクス港に行って、そこで冬を過ごしたいと主張した。

¹³And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

¹³時に、南風が静かに吹いてきたので、彼らは、この時とばかりにいかりを上げて、クレテの岸に沿って航行した。

¹⁴But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

¹⁴すると間もなく、ユーラクロンと呼ばれる暴風が、島から吹きおろしてきた。

¹⁵And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

¹⁵そのために、舟が流されて風に逆らうことができないので、わたしたちは吹き流されるままに任せた。

¹⁶And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

¹⁶それから、クラウダという小島の陰に、はいり込んだので、わたしたちは、やっとのことで小舟を処置することができ、

¹⁷Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

¹⁷それを舟に引き上げてから、綱で船体を巻きつけた。また、スルテスの洲に乗り上げるのを恐れ、帆をおろして流れるままにした。

¹⁸And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

¹⁸わたしたちは、暴風にひどく悩まされつづけたので、次の日に、人々は積荷を捨てはじめ、

¹⁹And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

¹⁹三日目には、船具までも、てずから投げすてた。

²⁰And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

²⁰幾日ものあいだ、太陽も星も見えず、暴風は激しく吹きすさぶので、わたしたちの助かる最後の望みもなくなった。

²¹But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

²¹みんなの者は、長いあいだ食事もしないでいたが、その時、パウロが彼らの中に立って言った、「皆さん、あなたがたが、わたしの忠告を聞きいれて、クレテから出なかったら、このような危害や損失を被らなくてすんだはずであった。

²²And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.

²²だが、この際、お勧めする。元気を出しなさい。舟が失われるだけで、あなたがたの中で生命を失うものは、ひとりもいないであろう。

²³For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

²³昨夜、わたしが仕え、また拝んでいる神からの御使が、わたしのそばに立って言った、

²⁴Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

²⁴『パウロよ、恐れるな。あなたは必ずカイザルの前に立たなければならない。たしかに神は、あなたと同船の者を、ことごとくあなたに賜わっている』。

²⁵Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

²⁵だから、皆さん、元気を出しなさい。万事はわたしに告げられたとおりに成って行くと、わたしは、神かけて信じている。

²⁶Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.

²⁶われわれは、どこかの島に打ちあげられるに相違ない」。

²⁷But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;

²⁷わたしたちがアドリヤ海に漂ってから十四日目の夜になった時、真夜中ごろ、水夫らはどこかの陸地に近づいたように感じた。

²⁸And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.

²⁸そこで、水の深さを測ってみたところ、二十ひろであることがわかった。それから少し進んで、もう一度測ってみたら、十五ひろであった。

²⁹Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

²⁹わたしたちが、万一暗礁に乗り上げては大変だと、人々は気づかって、ともから四つのいかりを投げおろし、夜の明けるのを待ちわびていた。

³⁰And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,

³⁰その時、水夫らが舟から逃げ出そうと思って、へさきからいかりを投げおろすと見せかけ、小舟を海におろしていたので、

³¹Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

³¹パウロは、百卒長や兵卒たちに言った、「あの人たちが、舟に残っていなければ、あなたがたは助からない」。

³²Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

³²そこで兵卒たちは、小舟の綱を断ち切って、その流れて行くままに任せた。

³³And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.

³³夜が明けかけたころ、パウロは一同の者に、食事をするように勧めて言った、「あなたがたが食事もせずに、見張りを続けてから、何も食べないで、きょうが十四日目に当る。

³⁴Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.

³⁴だから、いま食事を取ることをお勧めする。それが、あなたがたを救うことになるのだから。たしかに髪の毛ひとすじでも、あなたがたの頭から失われることはないであろう」。

³⁵And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

³⁵彼はこう言って、パンを取り、みんなの前で神に感謝し、それをさいて食べはじめた。

³⁶Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

³⁶そこで、みんなの者も元気づいて食事をした。

³⁷And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

³⁷舟にいたわたしたちは、合わせて二百七十六人であった。

³⁸And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

³⁸みんなの者は、じゅうぶんに食事をした後、穀物を海に投げすてて舟を軽くした。

³⁹And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.

³⁹夜が明けて、どこの土地かよくわからなかったが、砂浜のある入江が見えたので、できれば、それに舟を乗り入れようということになった。

⁴⁰And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.

⁴⁰そこで、いかりを切り離して海に捨て、同時にかじの綱をゆるめ、風に前の帆をあげて、砂浜にむかって進んだ。

⁴¹And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

⁴¹ところが、潮流の流れ合う所に突き進んだため、舟を浅瀬に乗りあげてしまって、へさきがめり込んで動かなくなり、ともの方は激浪のためにこわされた。

⁴²And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.

⁴²兵卒たちは、囚人らが泳いで逃げるおそれがあるので、殺してしまおうと図ったが、

⁴³But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

⁴³百卒長は、パウロを救いたいと思うところから、その意図をしりぞけ、泳げる者はまず海に飛び込んで陸に行き、その他の者は、板や舟の破片に乗って行くように命じた。こうして、全部の者が上陸して救われたのであった。

⁴⁴And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.
