¹And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.

¹わたしたちが、こうして救われてからわかったが、これはマルタと呼ばれる島であった。

²And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

²土地の人々は、わたしたちに並々ならぬ親切をあらわしてくれた。すなわち、降りしきる雨や寒さをしのぐために、火をたいてわたしたち一同をねぎらってくれたのである。

³And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

³そのとき、パウロはひとかかえの柴をたばねて火にくべたところ、熱気のためにまむしが出てきて、彼の手にかみついた。

⁴And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

⁴土地の人々は、この生きものがパウロの手からぶら下がっているのを見て、互に言った、「この人は、きっと人殺しに違いない。海からはのがれたが、ディケーの神様が彼を生かしてはおかないのだ」。

⁵And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

⁵ところがパウロは、まむしを火の中に振り落して、なんの害も被らなかった。

⁶Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

⁶彼らは、彼が間もなくはれ上がるか、あるいは、たちまち倒れて死ぬだろうと、様子をうかがっていた。しかし、長い間うかがっていても、彼の身になんの変ったことも起らないのを見て、彼らは考えを変えて、「この人は神様だ」と言い出した。

⁷In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

⁷さて、その場所の近くに、島の首長、ポプリオという人の所有地があった。彼は、そこにわたしたちを招待して、三日のあいだ親切にもてなしてくれた。

⁸And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

⁸たまたま、ポプリオの父が赤痢をわずらい、高熱で床についていた。そこでパウロは、その人のところにはいって行って祈り、手を彼の上においていやしてやった。

⁹So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

⁹このことがあってから、ほかに病気をしている島の人たちが、ぞくぞくとやってきて、みないやされた。

¹⁰Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

¹⁰彼らはわたしたちを非常に尊敬し、出帆の時には、必要な品々を持ってきてくれた。

¹¹And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.

¹¹三か月たった後、わたしたちは、この島に冬ごもりをしていたデオスクリの船飾りのあるアレキサンドリヤの舟で、出帆した。

¹²And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

¹²そして、シラクサに寄港して三日のあいだ停泊し、

¹³And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

¹³そこから進んでレギオンに行った。それから一日おいて、南風が吹いてきたのに乗じ、ふつか目にポテオリに着いた。

¹⁴Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

¹⁴そこで兄弟たちに会い、勧められるまま、彼らのところに七日間も滞在した。それからわたしたちは、ついにローマに到着した。

¹⁵And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

¹⁵ところが、兄弟たちは、わたしたちのことを聞いて、アピオ・ポロおよびトレス・タベルネまで出迎えてくれた。パウロは彼らに会って、神に感謝し勇み立った。

¹⁶And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

¹⁶わたしたちがローマに着いた後、パウロは、ひとりの番兵をつけられ、ひとりで住むことを許された。

¹⁷And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

¹⁷三日たってから、パウロは、重立ったユダヤ人たちを招いた。みんなの者が集まったとき、彼らに言った、「兄弟たちよ、わたしは、わが国民に対しても、あるいは先祖伝来の慣例に対しても、何一つそむく行為がなかったのに、エルサレムで囚人としてローマ人たちの手に引き渡された。

¹⁸Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

¹⁸彼らはわたしを取り調べた結果、なんら死に当る罪状もないので、わたしを釈放しようと思ったのであるが、

¹⁹But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

¹⁹ユダヤ人たちがこれに反対したため、わたしはやむを得ず、カイザルに上訴するに至ったのである。しかしわたしは、わが同胞を訴えようなどとしているのではない。

²⁰For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

²⁰こういうわけで、あなたがたに会って語り合いたいと願っていた。事実、わたしは、イスラエルのいだいている希望のゆえに、この鎖につながれているのである」。

²¹And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

²¹そこで彼らは、パウロに言った、「わたしたちは、ユダヤ人たちから、あなたについて、なんの文書も受け取っていないし、また、兄弟たちの中からここにきて、あなたについて不利な報告をしたり、悪口を言ったりした者もなかった。

²²But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

²²わたしたちは、あなたの考えていることを、直接あなたから聞くのが、正しいことだと思っている。実は、この宗派については、いたるところで反対のあることが、わたしたちの耳にもはいっている」。

²³And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

²³そこで、日を定めて、大ぜいの人が、パウロの宿につめかけてきたので、朝から晩まで、パウロは語り続け、神の国のことをあかしし、またモーセの律法や預言者の書を引いて、イエスについて彼らの説得につとめた。

²⁴And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

²⁴ある者はパウロの言うことを受けいれ、ある者は信じようともしなかった。

²⁵And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

²⁵互に意見が合わなくて、みんなの者が帰ろうとしていた時、パウロはひとこと述べて言った、「聖霊はよくも預言者イザヤによって、あなたがたの先祖に語ったものである。

²⁶Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

²⁶『この民に行って言え、あなたがたは聞くには聞くが、決して悟らない。見るには見るが、決して認めない。

²⁷For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

²⁷この民の心は鈍くなり、その耳は聞えにくく、その目は閉じている。それは、彼らが目で見ず、耳で聞かず、心で悟らず、悔い改めていやされることがないためである』。

²⁸Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

²⁸そこで、あなたがたは知っておくがよい。神のこの救の言葉は、異邦人に送られたのだ。彼らは、これに聞きしたがうであろう」。〔

²⁹And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

²⁹パウロがこれらのことを述べ終ると、ユダヤ人らは、互に論じ合いながら帰って行った。〕

³⁰And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

³⁰パウロは、自分の借りた家に満二年のあいだ住んで、たずねて来る人々をみな迎え入れ、はばからず、また妨げられることもなく、神の国を宣べ伝え、主イエス・キリストのことを教えつづけた。

³¹Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
