¹Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

²(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

²この福音は、神が、預言者たちにより、聖書の中で、あらかじめ約束されたものであって、

³Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

³御子に関するものである。御子は、肉によればダビデの子孫から生れ、

⁴And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

⁴聖なる霊によれば、死人からの復活により、御力をもって神の御子と定められた。これがわたしたちの主イエス・キリストである。

⁵By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

⁵わたしたちは、その御名のために、すべての異邦人を信仰の従順に至らせるようにと、彼によって恵みと使徒の務とを受けたのであり、

⁶Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

⁶あなたがたもまた、彼らの中にあって、召されてイエス・キリストに属する者となったのである――

⁷To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

⁷ローマにいる、神に愛され、召された聖徒一同へ。わたしたちの父なる神および主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。

⁸First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

⁸まず第一に、わたしは、あなたがたの信仰が全世界に言い伝えられていることを、イエス・キリストによって、あなたがた一同のために、わたしの神に感謝する。

⁹For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

⁹わたしは、祈のたびごとに、絶えずあなたがたを覚え、いつかは御旨にかなって道が開かれ、どうにかして、あなたがたの所に行けるようにと願っている。このことについて、わたしのためにあかしをして下さるのは、わたしが霊により、御子の福音を宣べ伝えて仕えている神である。

¹⁰Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

¹⁰わたしは、あなたがたに会うことを熱望している。あなたがたに霊の賜物を幾分でも分け与えて、力づけたいからである。

¹¹For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

¹¹それは、あなたがたの中にいて、あなたがたとわたしとのお互の信仰によって、共に励まし合うためにほかならない。

¹²That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

¹²兄弟たちよ。このことを知らずにいてもらいたくない。わたしはほかの異邦人の間で得たように、あなたがたの間でも幾分かの実を得るために、あなたがたの所に行こうとしばしば企てたが、今まで妨げられてきた。

¹³Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

¹³わたしには、ギリシヤ人にも未開の人にも、賢い者にも無知な者にも、果すべき責任がある。

¹⁴I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.

¹⁴そこで、わたしとしての切なる願いは、ローマにいるあなたがたにも、福音を宣べ伝えることなのである。

¹⁵So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

¹⁵わたしは福音を恥としない。それは、ユダヤ人をはじめ、ギリシヤ人にも、すべて信じる者に、救を得させる神の力である。

¹⁶For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

¹⁶神の義は、その福音の中に啓示され、信仰に始まり信仰に至らせる。これは、「信仰による義人は生きる」と書いてあるとおりである。

¹⁷For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

¹⁷神の怒りは、不義をもって真理をはばもうとする人間のあらゆる不信心と不義とに対して、天から啓示される。

¹⁸For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

¹⁸なぜなら、神について知りうる事がらは、彼らには明らかであり、神がそれを彼らに明らかにされたのである。

¹⁹Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

¹⁹神の見えない性質、すなわち、神の永遠の力と神性とは、天地創造このかた、被造物において知られていて、明らかに認められるからである。したがって、彼らには弁解の余地がない。

²⁰For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

²⁰なぜなら、彼らは神を知っていながら、神としてあがめず、感謝もせず、かえってその思いはむなしくなり、その無知な心は暗くなったからである。

²¹Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

²¹彼らは自ら知者と称しながら、愚かになり、

²²Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

²²不朽の神の栄光を変えて、朽ちる人間や鳥や獣や這うものの像に似せたのである。

²³And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

²³ゆえに、神は、彼らが心の欲情にかられ、自分のからだを互にはずかしめて、汚すままに任せられた。

²⁴Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

²⁴彼らは神の真理を変えて虚偽とし、創造者の代りに被造物を拝み、これに仕えたのである。創造者こそ永遠にほむべきものである、アァメン。

²⁵Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

²⁵それゆえ、神は彼らを恥ずべき情欲に任せられた。すなわち、彼らの中の女は、その自然の関係を不自然なものに代え、

²⁶For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

²⁶男もまた同じように女との自然の関係を捨てて、互にその情欲の炎を燃やし、男は男に対して恥ずべきことをなし、そしてその乱行の当然の報いを、身に受けたのである。

²⁷And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

²⁷そして、彼らは神を認めることを正しいとしなかったので、神は彼らを正しからぬ思いにわたし、なすべからざる事をなすに任せられた。

²⁸And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

²⁸すなわち、彼らは、あらゆる不義と悪と貪欲と悪意とにあふれ、ねたみと殺意と争いと詐欺と悪念とに満ち、また、ざん言する者、

²⁹Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

²⁹そしる者、神を憎む者、不遜な者、高慢な者、大言壮語する者、悪事をたくらむ者、親に逆らう者となり、

³⁰Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

³⁰無知、不誠実、無情、無慈悲な者となっている。彼らは、こうした事を行う者どもが死に価するという神の定めをよく知りながら、自らそれを行うばかりではなく、それを行う者どもを是認さえしている。

³¹Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

³²Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
