¹Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

¹大祭司は「そのとおりか」と尋ねた。

²And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

²そこで、ステパノが言った、「兄弟たち、父たちよ、お聞き下さい。わたしたちの父祖アブラハムが、カランに住む前、まだメソポタミヤにいたとき、栄光の神が彼に現れて

³And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

³仰せになった、『あなたの土地と親族から離れて、あなたにさし示す地に行きなさい』。

⁴Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

⁴そこで、アブラハムはカルデヤ人の地を出て、カランに住んだ。そして、彼の父が死んだのち、神は彼をそこから、今あなたがたの住んでいるこの地に移住させたが、

⁵And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

⁵そこでは、遺産となるものは何一つ、一歩の幅の土地すらも、与えられなかった。ただ、その地を所領として授けようとの約束を、彼と、そして彼にはまだ子がなかったのに、その子孫とに与えられたのである。

⁶And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

⁶神はこう仰せになった、『彼の子孫は他国に身を寄せるであろう。そして、そこで四百年のあいだ、奴隷にされて虐待を受けるであろう』。

⁷And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

⁷それから、さらに仰せになった、『彼らを奴隷にする国民を、わたしはさばくであろう。その後、彼らはそこからのがれ出て、この場所でわたしを礼拝するであろう』。

⁸And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

⁸そして、神はアブラハムに、割礼の契約をお与えになった。こうして、彼はイサクの父となり、これに八日目に割礼を施し、それから、イサクはヤコブの父となり、ヤコブは十二人の族長たちの父となった。

⁹And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

⁹族長たちは、ヨセフをねたんで、エジプトに売りとばした。しかし、神は彼と共にいまして、

¹⁰And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁰あらゆる苦難から彼を救い出し、エジプト王パロの前で恵みを与え、知恵をあらわさせた。そこで、パロは彼を宰相の任につかせ、エジプトならびに王家全体の支配に当らせた。

¹¹Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

¹¹時に、エジプトとカナンとの全土にわたって、ききんが起り、大きな苦難が襲ってきて、わたしたちの先祖たちは、食物が得られなくなった。

¹²But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

¹²ヤコブは、エジプトには食糧があると聞いて、初めに先祖たちをつかわしたが、

¹³And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

¹³二回目の時に、ヨセフが兄弟たちに、自分の身の上を打ち明けたので、彼の親族関係がパロに知れてきた。

¹⁴Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

¹⁴ヨセフは使をやって、父ヤコブと七十五人にのぼる親族一同とを招いた。

¹⁵So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

¹⁵こうして、ヤコブはエジプトに下り、彼自身も先祖たちもそこで死に、

¹⁶And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

¹⁶それから彼らは、シケムに移されて、かねてアブラハムがいくらかの金を出してこの地のハモルの子らから買っておいた墓に、葬られた。

¹⁷But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁷神がアブラハムに対して立てられた約束の時期が近づくにつれ、民はふえてエジプト全土にひろがった。

¹⁸Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

¹⁸やがて、ヨセフのことを知らない別な王が、エジプトに起った。

¹⁹The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

¹⁹この王は、わたしたちの同族に対し策略をめぐらして、先祖たちを虐待し、その幼な子らを生かしておかないように捨てさせた。

²⁰In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

²⁰モーセが生れたのは、ちょうどこのころのことである。彼はまれに見る美しい子であった。三か月の間は、父の家で育てられたが、

²¹And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

²¹そののち捨てられたのを、パロの娘が拾いあげて、自分の子として育てた。

²²And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

²²モーセはエジプト人のあらゆる学問を教え込まれ、言葉にもわざにも、力があった。

²³And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

²³四十歳になった時、モーセは自分の兄弟であるイスラエル人たちのために尽すことを、思い立った。

²⁴And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

²⁴ところが、そのひとりがいじめられているのを見て、これをかばい、虐待されているその人のために、相手のエジプト人を撃って仕返しをした。

²⁵For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

²⁵彼は、自分の手によって神が兄弟たちを救って下さることを、みんなが悟るものと思っていたが、実際はそれを悟らなかったのである。

²⁶And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

²⁶翌日モーセは、彼らが争い合っているところに現れ、仲裁しようとして言った、『まて、君たちは兄弟同志ではないか。どうして互に傷つけ合っているのか』。

²⁷But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

²⁷すると、仲間をいじめていた者が、モーセを突き飛ばして言った、『だれが、君をわれわれの支配者や裁判人にしたのか。

²⁸Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

²⁸君は、きのう、エジプト人を殺したように、わたしも殺そうと思っているのか』。

²⁹Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

²⁹モーセは、この言葉を聞いて逃げ、ミデアンの地に身を寄せ、そこで男の子ふたりをもうけた。

³⁰And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

³⁰四十年たった時、シナイ山の荒野において、御使が柴の燃える炎の中でモーセに現れた。

³¹When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,

³¹彼はこの光景を見て不思議に思い、それを見きわめるために近寄ったところ、主の声が聞えてきた、

³²Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

³²『わたしは、あなたの先祖たちの神、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神である』。モーセは恐れおののいて、もうそれを見る勇気もなくなった。

³³Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

³³すると、主が彼に言われた、『あなたの足から、くつを脱ぎなさい。あなたの立っているこの場所は、聖なる地である。

³⁴I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

³⁴わたしは、エジプトにいるわたしの民が虐待されている有様を確かに見とどけ、その苦悩のうめき声を聞いたので、彼らを救い出すために下ってきたのである。さあ、今あなたをエジプトにつかわそう』。

³⁵This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

³⁵こうして、『だれが、君を支配者や裁判人にしたのか』と言って排斥されたこのモーセを、神は、柴の中で彼に現れた御使の手によって、支配者、解放者として、おつかわしになったのである。

³⁶He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

³⁶この人が、人々を導き出して、エジプトの地においても、紅海においても、また四十年のあいだ荒野においても、奇跡としるしとを行ったのである。

³⁷This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

³⁷この人が、イスラエル人たちに、『神はわたしをお立てになったように、あなたがたの兄弟たちの中から、ひとりの預言者をお立てになるであろう』と言ったモーセである。

³⁸This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

³⁸この人が、シナイ山で、彼に語りかけた御使や先祖たちと共に、荒野における集会にいて、生ける御言葉を授かり、それをあなたがたに伝えたのである。

³⁹To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

³⁹ところが、先祖たちは彼に従おうとはせず、かえって彼を退け、心の中でエジプトにあこがれて、

⁴⁰Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

⁴⁰『わたしたちを導いてくれる神々を造って下さい。わたしたちをエジプトの地から導いてきたあのモーセがどうなったのか、わかりませんから』とアロンに言った。

⁴¹And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

⁴¹そのころ、彼らは子牛の像を造り、その偶像に供え物をささげ、自分たちの手で造ったものを祭ってうち興じていた。

⁴²Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

⁴²そこで、神は顔をそむけ、彼らを天の星を拝むままに任せられた。預言者の書にこう書いてあるとおりである、『イスラエルの家よ、四十年のあいだ荒野にいた時に、いけにえと供え物とを、わたしにささげたことがあったか。

⁴³Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

⁴³あなたがたは、モロクの幕屋やロンパの星の神を、かつぎ回った。それらは、拝むために自分で造った偶像に過ぎぬ。だからわたしは、あなたがたをバビロンのかなたへ、移してしまうであろう』。

⁴⁴Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

⁴⁴わたしたちの先祖には、荒野にあかしの幕屋があった。それは、見たままの型にしたがって造るようにと、モーセに語ったかたのご命令どおりに造ったものである。

⁴⁵Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

⁴⁵この幕屋は、わたしたちの先祖が、ヨシュアに率いられ、神によって諸民族を彼らの前から追い払い、その所領をのり取ったときに、そこに持ち込まれ、次々に受け継がれて、ダビデの時代に及んだものである。

⁴⁶Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

⁴⁶ダビデは、神の恵みをこうむり、そして、ヤコブの神のために宮を造営したいと願った。

⁴⁷But Solomon built him an house.

⁴⁷けれども、じっさいにその宮を建てたのは、ソロモンであった。

⁴⁸Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

⁴⁸しかし、いと高き者は、手で造った家の内にはお住みにならない。預言者が言っているとおりである、

⁴⁹Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

⁴⁹『主が仰せられる、どんな家をわたしのために建てるのか。わたしのいこいの場所は、どれか。天はわたしの王座、地はわたしの足台である。

⁵⁰Hath not my hand made all these things?

⁵⁰これは皆わたしの手が造ったものではないか』。

⁵¹Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

⁵¹ああ、強情で、心にも耳にも割礼のない人たちよ。あなたがたは、いつも聖霊に逆らっている。それは、あなたがたの先祖たちと同じである。

⁵²Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

⁵²いったい、あなたがたの先祖が迫害しなかった預言者が、ひとりでもいたか。彼らは正しいかたの来ることを予告した人たちを殺し、今やあなたがたは、その正しいかたを裏切る者、また殺す者となった。

⁵³Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

⁵³あなたがたは、御使たちによって伝えられた律法を受けたのに、それを守ることをしなかった」。

⁵⁴When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

⁵⁴人々はこれを聞いて、心の底から激しく怒り、ステパノにむかって、歯ぎしりをした。

⁵⁵But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

⁵⁵しかし、彼は聖霊に満たされて、天を見つめていると、神の栄光が現れ、イエスが神の右に立っておられるのが見えた。

⁵⁶And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

⁵⁶そこで、彼は「ああ、天が開けて、人の子が神の右に立っておいでになるのが見える」と言った。

⁵⁷Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

⁵⁷人々は大声で叫びながら、耳をおおい、ステパノを目がけて、いっせいに殺到し、

⁵⁸And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

⁵⁸彼を市外に引き出して、石で打った。これに立ち合った人たちは、自分の上着を脱いで、サウロという若者の足もとに置いた。

⁵⁹And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

⁵⁹こうして、彼らがステパノに石を投げつけている間、ステパノは祈りつづけて言った、「主イエスよ、わたしの霊をお受け下さい」。そして、ひざまずいて、大声で叫んだ、「主よ、どうぞ、この罪を彼らに負わせないで下さい」。こう言って、彼は眠りについた。

⁶⁰And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

⁶⁰そして、ひざまずいて、大声で叫んだ、「主よ、どうぞ、この罪を彼らに負わせないで下さい」。こう言って、彼は眠りについた。
