¹And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

¹サウロは、ステパノを殺すことに賛成していた。その日、エルサレムの教会に対して大迫害が起り、使徒以外の者はことごとく、ユダヤとサマリヤとの地方に散らされて行った。

²And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

²信仰深い人たちはステパノを葬り、彼のために胸を打って、非常に悲しんだ。

³As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

³ところが、サウロは家々に押し入って、男や女を引きずり出し、次々に獄に渡して、教会を荒し回った。

⁴Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

⁴さて、散らされて行った人たちは、御言を宣べ伝えながら、めぐり歩いた。

⁵Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

⁵ピリポはサマリヤの町に下って行き、人々にキリストを宣べはじめた。

⁶And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

⁶群衆はピリポの話を聞き、その行っていたしるしを見て、こぞって彼の語ることに耳を傾けた。

⁷For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

⁷汚れた霊につかれた多くの人々からは、その霊が大声でわめきながら出て行くし、また、多くの中風をわずらっている者や、足のきかない者がいやされたからである。

⁸And there was great joy in that city.

⁸それで、この町では人々が、大変なよろこびかたであった。

⁹But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

⁹さて、この町に以前からシモンという人がいた。彼は魔術を行ってサマリヤの人たちを驚かし、自分をさも偉い者のように言いふらしていた。

¹⁰To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

¹⁰それで、小さい者から大きい者にいたるまで皆、彼について行き、「この人こそは『大能』と呼ばれる神の力である」と言っていた。

¹¹And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

¹¹彼らがこの人について行ったのは、ながい間その魔術に驚かされていたためであった。

¹²But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

¹²ところが、ピリポが神の国とイエス・キリストの名について宣べ伝えるに及んで、男も女も信じて、ぞくぞくとバプテスマを受けた。

¹³Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

¹³シモン自身も信じて、バプテスマを受け、それから、引きつづきピリポについて行った。そして、数々のしるしやめざましい奇跡が行われるのを見て、驚いていた。

¹⁴Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

¹⁴エルサレムにいる使徒たちは、サマリヤの人々が、神の言を受け入れたと聞いて、ペテロとヨハネとを、そこにつかわした。

¹⁵Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

¹⁵ふたりはサマリヤに下って行って、みんなが聖霊を受けるようにと、彼らのために祈った。

¹⁶(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

¹⁶それは、彼らはただ主イエスの名によってバプテスマを受けていただけで、聖霊はまだだれにも下っていなかったからである。

¹⁷Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

¹⁷そこで、ふたりが手を彼らの上においたところ、彼らは聖霊を受けた。

¹⁸And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

¹⁸シモンは、使徒たちが手をおいたために、御霊が人々に授けられたのを見て、金をさし出し、

¹⁹Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

¹⁹「わたしが手をおけばだれにでも聖霊が授けられるように、その力をわたしにも下さい」と言った。

²⁰But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

²⁰そこで、ペテロが彼に言った、「おまえの金は、おまえもろとも、うせてしまえ。神の賜物が、金で得られるなどと思っているのか。

²¹Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

²¹おまえの心が神の前に正しくないから、おまえは、とうてい、この事にあずかることができない。

²²Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

²²だから、この悪事を悔いて、主に祈れ。そうすればあるいはそんな思いを心にいだいたことが、ゆるされるかも知れない。

²³For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

²³おまえには、まだ苦い胆汁があり、不義のなわ目がからみついている。それが、わたしにわかっている」。

²⁴Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the LORD for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

²⁴シモンはこれを聞いて言った、「仰せのような事が、わたしの身に起らないように、どうぞ、わたしのために主に祈って下さい」。

²⁵And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

²⁵使徒たちは力強くあかしをなし、また主の言を語った後、サマリヤ人の多くの村々に福音を宣べ伝えて、エルサレムに帰った。

²⁶And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

²⁶しかし、主の使がピリポにむかって言った、「立って南方に行き、エルサレムからガザへ下る道に出なさい」（このガザは、今は荒れはてている）。

²⁷And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

²⁷そこで、彼は立って出かけた。すると、ちょうど、エチオピヤ人の女王カンダケの高官で、女王の財宝全部を管理していた宦官であるエチオピヤ人が、礼拝のためエルサレムに上り、

²⁸Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

²⁸その帰途についていたところであった。彼は自分の馬車に乗って、預言者イザヤの書を読んでいた。

²⁹Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

²⁹御霊がピリポに「進み寄って、あの馬車に並んで行きなさい」と言った。

³⁰And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

³⁰そこでピリポが駆けて行くと、預言者イザヤの書を読んでいるその人の声が聞えたので、「あなたは、読んでいることが、おわかりですか」と尋ねた。

³¹And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

³¹彼は「だれかが、手びきをしてくれなければ、どうしてわかりましょう」と答えた。そして、馬車に乗って一緒にすわるようにと、ピリポにすすめた。

³²The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

³²彼が読んでいた聖書の箇所は、これであった、「彼は、ほふり場に引かれて行く羊のように、また、黙々として、毛を刈る者の前に立つ小羊のように、口を開かない。

³³In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

³³彼は、いやしめられて、そのさばきも行われなかった。だれが、彼の子孫のことを語ることができようか、彼の命が地上から取り去られているからには」。

³⁴And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

³⁴宦官はピリポにむかって言った、「お尋ねしますが、ここで預言者はだれのことを言っているのですか。自分のことですか、それとも、だれかほかの人のことですか」。

³⁵Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

³⁵そこでピリポは口を開き、この聖句から説き起して、イエスのことを宣べ伝えた。

³⁶And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

³⁶道を進んで行くうちに、水のある所にきたので、宦官が言った、「ここに水があります。わたしがバプテスマを受けるのに、なんのさしつかえがありますか」。〔

³⁷And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

³⁷これに対して、ピリポは、「あなたがまごころから信じるなら、受けてさしつかえはありません」と言った。すると、彼は「わたしは、イエス・キリストを神の子と信じます」と答えた。〕

³⁸And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

³⁸そこで車をとめさせ、ピリポと宦官と、ふたりとも、水の中に降りて行き、ピリポが宦官にバプテスマを授けた。

³⁹And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

³⁹ふたりが水から上がると、主の霊がピリポをさらって行ったので、宦官はもう彼を見ることができなかった。宦官はよろこびながら旅をつづけた。その後、ピリポはアゾトに姿をあらわして、町々をめぐり歩き、いたるところで福音を宣べ伝えて、ついにカイザリヤに着いた。

⁴⁰But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
