¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

¹ダビデの子、エルサレムの王である伝道者の言葉。

²Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

²伝道者は言う、空の空、空の空、いっさいは空である。

³What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

³日の下で人が労するすべての労苦は、その身になんの益があるか。

⁴One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

⁴世は去り、世はきたる。しかし地は永遠に変らない。

⁵The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

⁵日はいで、日は没し、その出た所に急ぎ行く。

⁶The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

⁶風は南に吹き、また転じて、北に向かい、めぐりにめぐって、またそのめぐる所に帰る。

⁷All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

⁷川はみな、海に流れ入る、しかし海は満ちることがない。川はその出てきた所にまた帰って行く。

⁸All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁸すべての事は人をうみ疲れさせる、人はこれを言いつくすことができない。目は見ることに飽きることがなく、耳は聞くことに満足することがない。

⁹The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

⁹先にあったことは、また後にもある、先になされた事は、また後にもなされる。日の下には新しいものはない。

¹⁰Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

¹⁰「見よ、これは新しいものだ」と言われるものがあるか、それはわれわれの前にあった世々に、すでにあったものである。

¹¹There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

¹¹前の者のことは覚えられることがない、また、きたるべき後の者のことも、後に起る者はこれを覚えることがない。

¹²伝道者であるわたしはエルサレムで、イスラエルの王であった。

¹³And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

¹³わたしは心をつくし、知恵を用いて、天が下に行われるすべてのことを尋ね、また調べた。これは神が、人の子らに与えて、ほねおらせられる苦しい仕事である。

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁴わたしは日の下で人が行うすべてのわざを見たが、みな空であって風を捕えるようである。

¹⁵That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

¹⁵曲ったものは、まっすぐにすることができない、欠けたものは数えることができない。

¹⁶I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

¹⁶わたしは心の中に語って言った、「わたしは、わたしより先にエルサレムを治めたすべての者にまさって、多くの知恵を得た。わたしの心は知恵と知識を多く得た」。

¹⁷And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

¹⁷わたしは心をつくして知恵を知り、また狂気と愚痴とを知ろうとしたが、これもまた風を捕えるようなものであると悟った。それは知恵が多ければ悩みが多く、知識を増す者は憂いを増すからである。

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
