¹The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

¹マッサの王レムエルの言葉、すなわちその母が彼に教えたものである。

²What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

²わが子よ、何を言おうか。わが胎の子よ、何を言おうか。わたしが願をかけて得た子よ、何をいおうか。

³Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

³あなたの力を女についやすな、王をも滅ぼすものに、あなたの道を任せるな。

⁴It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

⁴レムエルよ、酒を飲むのは、王のすることではない、王のすることではない、濃い酒を求めるのは君たる者のすることではない。

⁵Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

⁵彼らは酒を飲んで、おきてを忘れ、すべて悩む者のさばきを曲げる。

⁶Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

⁶濃い酒を滅びようとしている者に与え、酒を心の苦しむ人に与えよ。

⁷Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

⁷彼らは飲んで自分の貧乏を忘れ、その悩みをもはや思い出さない。

⁸Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

⁸あなたは黙っている人のために、すべてのみなしごの訴えのために、口を開くがよい。

⁹Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

⁹口を開いて、正しいさばきを行い、貧しい者と乏しい者の訴えをただせ。

¹⁰Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

¹⁰だれが賢い妻を見つけることができるか、彼女は宝石よりもすぐれて尊い。

¹¹The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

¹¹その夫の心は彼女を信頼して、収益に欠けることはない。

¹²She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

¹²彼女は生きながらえている間、その夫のために良いことをして、悪いことをしない。

¹³She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

¹³彼女は羊の毛や亜麻を求めて、手ずから望みのように、それを仕上げる。

¹⁴She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

¹⁴また商人の舟のように、遠い国から食糧を運んでくる。

¹⁵She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

¹⁵彼女はまだ夜のあけぬうちに起きて、その家の者の食べ物を備え、その女たちに日用の分を与える。

¹⁶She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

¹⁶彼女は畑をよく考えてそれを買い、その手の働きの実をもって、ぶどう畑をつくり、

¹⁷She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

¹⁷力をもって腰に帯し、その腕を強くする。

¹⁸She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

¹⁸彼女はその商品のもうけのあるのを知っている、そのともしびは終夜消えることがない。

¹⁹She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

¹⁹彼女は手を糸取り棒にのべ、その手に、つむを持ち、

²⁰She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

²⁰手を貧しい者に開き、乏しい人に手をさしのべる。

²¹She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

²¹彼女はその家の者のために雪を恐れない、その家の者はみな紅の着物を着ているからである。

²²She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

²²彼女は自分のために美しいしとねを作り、亜麻布と紫布とをもってその着物とする。

²³Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

²³その夫はその地の長老たちと共に、町の門に座するので、人に知られている。

²⁴She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

²⁴彼女は亜麻布の着物をつくって、それを売り、帯をつくって商人に渡す。

²⁵Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

²⁵力と気品とは彼女の着物である、そして後の日を笑っている。

²⁶She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

²⁶彼女は口を開いて知恵を語る、その舌にはいつくしみの教がある。

²⁷She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

²⁷彼女は家の事をよくかえりみ、怠りのかてを食べることをしない。

²⁸Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

²⁸その子らは立ち上がって彼女を祝し、その夫もまた彼女をほめたたえて言う、

²⁹Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

²⁹「りっぱに事をなし遂げる女は多いけれども、あなたはそのすべてにまさっている」と。

³⁰Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

³⁰あでやかさは偽りであり、美しさはつかのまである、しかし主を恐れる女はほめたたえられる。その手の働きの実を彼女に与え、その行いのために彼女を町の門でほめたたえよ。

³¹Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
