¹The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,

¹マッサの人ヤケの子アグルの言葉。その人はイテエルに向かって言った、すなわちイテエルと、ウカルとに向かって言った、

²Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.

²わたしは確かに人よりも愚かであり、わたしには人の悟りがない。

³I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.

³わたしはまだ知恵をならうことができず、また、聖なる者を悟ることもできない。

⁴Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?

⁴天にのぼったり、下ったりしたのはだれか、風をこぶしの中に集めたのはだれか、水を着物に包んだのはだれか、地のすべての限界を定めた者はだれか、その名は何か、その子の名は何か、あなたは確かにそれを知っている。

⁵Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

⁵神の言葉はみな真実である、神は彼に寄り頼む者の盾である。

⁶Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

⁶その言葉に付け加えてはならない、彼があなたを責め、あなたを偽り者とされないためだ。

⁷Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:

⁷わたしは二つのことをあなたに求めます、わたしの死なないうちに、これをかなえてください。

⁸Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

⁸うそ、偽りをわたしから遠ざけ、貧しくもなく、また富みもせず、ただなくてならぬ食物でわたしを養ってください。

⁹Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

⁹飽き足りて、あなたを知らないといい、「主とはだれか」と言うことのないため、また貧しくて盗みをし、わたしの神の名を汚すことのないためです。

¹⁰Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.

¹⁰あなたは、しもべのことをその主人に、あしざまにいってはならない、そうでないと彼はあなたをのろい、あなたは罪をきせられる。

¹¹There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

¹¹世には父をのろったり、母を祝福しない者がある。

¹²There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

¹²世には自分の目にみずからを清い者として、なおその汚れを洗われないものがある。

¹³There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

¹³世にはまた、このような人がある――ああ、その目のいかに高きことよ、またそのまぶたのいかにつりあがっていることよ。

¹⁴There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

¹⁴世にはまたつるぎのような歯をもち、刀のようなきばをもって、貧しい者を地の上から、乏しい者を人の中から食い滅ぼすものがある。

¹⁵The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:

¹⁵蛭にふたりの娘があって、「与えよ、与えよ」という。飽くことを知らないものが三つある、いや、四つあって、皆「もう、たくさんです」と言わない。

¹⁶The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.

¹⁶すなわち陰府、不妊の胎、水にかわく地、「もう、たくさんだ」といわない火がそれである。

¹⁷The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

¹⁷自分の父をあざけり、母に従うのを卑しいこととする目は、谷のからすがこれをつつき出し、はげたかがこれを食べる。

¹⁸There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:

¹⁸わたしにとって不思議にたえないことが三つある、いや、四つあって、わたしには悟ることができない。

¹⁹The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.

¹⁹すなわち空を飛ぶはげたかの道、岩の上を這うへびの道、海をはしる舟の道、男の女にあう道がそれである。

²⁰Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.

²⁰遊女の道もまたそうだ、彼女は食べて、その口をぬぐって、「わたしは何もわるいことはしない」と言う。

²¹For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:

²¹地は三つのことによって震う、いや、四つのことによって、耐えることができない。

²²For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;

²²すなわち奴隷たる者が王となり、愚かな者が食物に飽き、

²³For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.

²³忌みきらわれた女が嫁に行き、はしためが女主人のあとにすわることである。

²⁴There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

²⁴この地上に、小さいけれども、非常に賢いものが四つある。

²⁵The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;

²⁵ありは力のない種類だが、その食糧を夏のうちに備える。

²⁶The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;

²⁶岩だぬきは強くない種類だが、その家を岩につくる。

²⁷The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

²⁷いなごは王がないけれども、みな隊を組んでいで立つ。

²⁸The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.

²⁸やもりは手でつかまえられるが、王の宮殿におる。

²⁹There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:

²⁹歩きぶりの堂々たる者が三つある、いや、四つあって、みな堂々と歩く。

³⁰A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;

³⁰すなわち獣のうちでもっとも強く、何ものの前にも退かない、しし、

³¹A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.

³¹尾を立てて歩くおんどり、雄やぎ、その民の前をいばって歩く王がそれである。

³²If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.

³²あなたがもし愚かであって自ら高ぶり、あるいは悪事を計ったならば、あなたの手を口に当てるがよい。乳をしめれば凝乳が出る、鼻をしめれば血がでる、怒りをしめれば争いが起る。

³³Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
