¹He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

³Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

³知恵を愛する人はその父を喜ばせ、遊女に交わる者はその資産を浪費する。

⁴The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

⁴王は公儀をもって国を堅くする、しかし、重税を取り立てる者はこれを滅ぼす。

⁵A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.

⁵その隣り人にへつらう者は、彼の足の前に網を張る。

⁶In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

⁶悪人は自分の罪のわなに陥る、しかし正しい人は喜び楽しむ。

⁷The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.

⁷正しい人は貧しい者の訴えをかえりみる、悪しき人はそれを知ろうとはしない。

⁸Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

⁸あざける人は町を乱し、知恵ある者は怒りを静める。

⁹If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

⁹知恵ある人が愚かな人と争うと、愚かな者はただ怒り、あるいは笑って、休むことがない。

¹⁰The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.

¹⁰血に飢えている人は罪のない者を憎む、悪しき者は彼の命を求める。

¹¹A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

¹¹愚かな者は怒りをことごとく表わし、知恵ある者は静かにこれをおさえる。

¹²If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

¹²もし治める者が偽りの言葉に聞くならば、その役人らはみな悪くなる。

¹³The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.

¹³貧しい者と、しえたげる者とは共に世におる、主は彼ら両者の目に光を与えられる。

¹⁴The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

¹⁴もし王が貧しい者を公平にさばくならば、その位はいつまでも堅く立つ。

¹⁵The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

¹⁵むちと戒めとは知恵を与える、わがままにさせた子はその母に恥をもたらす。

¹⁶When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.

¹⁶悪しき者が権力を得ると罪も増す、正しい者は彼らの倒れるのを見る。

¹⁷Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

¹⁷あなたの子を懲しめよ、そうすれば彼はあなたを安らかにし、またあなたの心に喜びを与える。

¹⁸Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

¹⁸預言がなければ民はわがままにふるまう、しかし律法を守る者はさいわいである。

¹⁹A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

¹⁹しもべは言葉だけで訓練することはできない、彼は聞いて知っても、心にとめないからである。

²⁰Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

²⁰言葉の軽率な人を見るか、彼よりもかえって愚かな者のほうに望みがある。

²¹He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

²¹しもべをその幼い時からわがままに育てる人は、ついにはそれを自分のあとつぎにする。

²²An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.

²²怒る人は争いを起し、憤る人は多くの罪を犯す。

²³A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

²³人の高ぶりはその人を低くし、心にへりくだる者は誉を得る。

²⁴Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.

²⁴盗びとにくみする者は自分の魂を憎む、彼はのろいを聞いても何事をも口外しない。

²⁵The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

²⁵人を恐れると、わなに陥る、主に信頼する者は安らかである。

²⁶Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.

²⁶治める者の歓心を得ようとする人は多い、しかし人の事を定めるのは主による。正しい人は不正を行う人を憎み、悪しき者は正しく歩む人を憎む。

²⁷An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

²⁷正しい人は不正を行う人を憎み、悪しき者は正しく歩む人を憎む。
