¹Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

²Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

²「言葉が多ければ、答なしにすまされるだろうか。口の達者な人は義とされるだろうか。

³Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

³あなたのむなしい言葉は人を沈黙させるだろうか。あなたがあざけるとき、人はあなたを恥じさせないだろうか。

⁴For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.

⁴あなたは言う、『わたしの教は正しい、わたしは神の目に潔い』と。

⁵But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

⁵どうぞ神が言葉を出し、あなたにむかってくちびるを開き、

⁶And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

⁶知恵の秘密をあなたに示されるように。神はさまざまの知識をもたれるからである。それであなたは知るがよい、神はあなたの罪よりも軽くあなたを罰せられることを。

⁷Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

⁷あなたは神の深い事を窮めることができるか。全能者の限界を窮めることができるか。

⁸It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

⁸それは天よりも高い、あなたは何をなしうるか。それは陰府よりも深い、あなたは何を知りうるか。

⁹The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

⁹その量は地よりも長く、海よりも広い。

¹⁰If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

¹⁰彼がもし行きめぐって人を捕え、さばきに召し集められるとき、だれが彼をはばむことができよう。

¹¹For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

¹¹彼は卑しい人間を知っておられるからだ。彼は不義を見る時、これに心をとめられぬであろうか。

¹²For vain men would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.

¹²しかし野ろばの子が人として生れるとき、愚かな者も悟りを得るであろう。

¹³If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

¹³もしあなたが心を正しくするならば、神に向かって手を伸べるであろう。

¹⁴If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

¹⁴もしあなたの手に不義があるなら、それを遠く去れ、あなたの天幕に悪を住まわせてはならない。

¹⁵For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

¹⁵そうすれば、あなたは恥じることなく顔をあげることができ、堅く立って、恐れることはない。

¹⁶Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:

¹⁶あなたは苦しみを忘れ、あなたのこれを覚えることは、流れ去った水のようになる。

¹⁷And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

¹⁸And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.

¹⁹Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
