¹And Job answered and said,

¹そこでヨブは答えて言った、

²No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

²「まことに、あなたがたのみ、人である、知恵はあなたがたと共に死ぬであろう。

³But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

³しかしわたしも、あなたがたと同様に悟りをもつ。わたしはあなたがたに劣らない。だれがこのような事を知らないだろうか。

⁴I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.

⁴わたしは神に呼ばわって、聞かれた者であるのに、その友の物笑いとなっている。正しく全き人は物笑いとなる。

⁵He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.

⁵安らかな者の思いには、不幸な者に対する侮りがあって、足のすべる者を待っている。

⁶The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

⁶かすめ奪う者の天幕は栄え、神を怒らす者は安らかである。自分の手に神を携えている者も同様だ。

⁷But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:

⁷しかし獣に問うてみよ、それはあなたに教える。空の鳥に問うてみよ、それはあなたに告げる。

⁸Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

⁸あるいは地の草や木に問うてみよ、彼らはあなたに教える。海の魚もまたあなたに示す。

⁹Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?

⁹これらすべてのもののうち、いずれか主の手がこれをなしたことを知らぬ者があろうか。

¹⁰In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

¹⁰すべての生き物の命、およびすべての人の息は彼の手のうちにある。

¹¹Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?

¹¹口が食物を味わうように、耳は言葉をわきまえないであろうか。

¹²With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

¹²老いた者には知恵があり、命の長い者には悟りがある。

¹³With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.

¹³知恵と力は神と共にあり、深慮と悟りも彼のものである。

¹⁴Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

¹⁴彼が破壊すれば、再び建てることができない。彼が人を閉じ込めれば、開き出すことができない。

¹⁵Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

¹⁵彼が水を止めれば、それはかれ、彼が水を出せば、地をくつがえす。

¹⁶With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

¹⁶力と深き知恵は彼と共にあり、惑わされる者も惑わす者も彼のものである。

¹⁷He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.

¹⁷彼は議士たちを裸にして連れ行き、さばきびとらを愚かにし、

¹⁸He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.

¹⁸王たちのきずなを解き、彼らの腰に腰帯を巻き、

¹⁹He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.

¹⁹祭司たちを裸にして連れ行き、力ある者を滅ぼし、

²⁰He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.

²⁰みずから頼む者たちの言葉を奪い、長老たちの分別を取り去り、

²¹He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.

²¹君たちの上に侮りを注ぎ、強い者たちの帯を解き、

²²He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

²²暗やみの中から隠れた事どもをあらわし、暗黒を光に引き出し、

²³He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.

²³国々を大きくし、またこれを滅ぼし、国々を広くし、また捕え行き、

²⁴He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

²⁴地の民の長たちの悟りを奪い、彼らを道なき荒野にさまよわせ、光なき暗やみに手探りさせ、酔うた者のようによろめかせる。

²⁵They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
