¹Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

²He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

²彼は花のように咲き出て枯れ、影のように飛び去って、とどまらない。

³And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

³あなたはこのような者にさえ目を開き、あなたの前に引き出して、さばかれるであろうか。

⁴Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴だれが汚れたもののうちから清いものを出すことができようか、ひとりもない。

⁵Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

⁵その日は定められ、その月の数もあなたと共にあり、あなたがその限りを定めて、越えることのできないようにされたのだから、

⁶Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

⁶彼から目をはなし、手をひいてください。そうすれば彼は雇人のように、その日を楽しむことができるでしょう。

⁷For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

⁷木には望みがある。たとい切られてもまた芽をだし、その若枝は絶えることがない。

⁸Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

⁸たといその根が地の中に老い、その幹が土の中に枯れても、

⁹Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

⁹なお水の潤いにあえば芽をふき、若木のように枝を出す。

¹⁰But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

¹⁰しかし人は死ねば消えうせる。息が絶えれば、どこにおるか。

¹¹As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

¹¹水が湖から消え、川がかれて、かわくように、

¹²So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

¹²人は伏して寝、また起きず、天のつきるまで、目ざめず、その眠りからさまされない。

¹³O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

¹³どうぞ、わたしを陰府にかくし、あなたの怒りのやむまで、潜ませ、わたしのために時を定めて、わたしを覚えてください。

¹⁴If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

¹⁴人がもし死ねば、また生きるでしょうか。わたしはわが服役の諸日の間、わが解放の来るまで待つでしょう。

¹⁵Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

¹⁵あなたがお呼びになるとき、わたしは答えるでしょう。あなたはみ手のわざを顧みられるでしょう。

¹⁶For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

¹⁶その時あなたはわたしの歩みを数え、わたしの罪を見のがされるでしょう。

¹⁷My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

¹⁷わたしのとがは袋の中に封じられ、あなたはわたしの罪を塗りかくされるでしょう。

¹⁸And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

¹⁸しかし山は倒れてくずれ、岩もその所から移される。

¹⁹The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

¹⁹水は石をうがち、大水は地のちりを洗い去る。このようにあなたは人の望みを断たれる。

²⁰Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

²⁰あなたはながく彼に勝って、彼を去り行かせ、彼の顔かたちを変らせて追いやられる。

²¹His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

²¹彼の子らは尊くなっても、彼はそれを知らない、卑しくなっても、それを悟らない。ただおのが身に痛みを覚え、おのれのために嘆くのみである」。

²²But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

²²ただおのが身に痛みを覚え、おのれのために嘆くのみである」。
