¹In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

¹初めに言があった。言は神と共にあった。言は神であった。

²The same was in the beginning with God.

²この言は初めに神と共にあった。

³All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

³すべてのものは、これによってできた。できたもののうち、一つとしてこれによらないものはなかった。

⁴In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

⁴この言に命があった。そしてこの命は人の光であった。

⁵And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

⁵光はやみの中に輝いている。そして、やみはこれに勝たなかった。

⁶There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

⁶ここにひとりの人があって、神からつかわされていた。その名をヨハネと言った。

⁷The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

⁷この人はあかしのためにきた。光についてあかしをし、彼によってすべての人が信じるためである。

⁸He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

⁸彼は光ではなく、ただ、光についてあかしをするためにきたのである。

⁹That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

⁹すべての人を照すまことの光があって、世にきた。

¹⁰He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

¹⁰彼は世にいた。そして、世は彼によってできたのであるが、世は彼を知らずにいた。

¹¹He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

¹¹彼は自分のところにきたのに、自分の民は彼を受けいれなかった。

¹²But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

¹²しかし、彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである。

¹³Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

¹³それらの人は、血すじによらず、肉の欲によらず、また、人の欲にもよらず、ただ神によって生れたのである。

¹⁴And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

¹⁴そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った。わたしたちはその栄光を見た。それは父のひとり子としての栄光であって、めぐみとまこととに満ちていた。

¹⁵John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

¹⁵ヨハネは彼についてあかしをし、叫んで言った、「『わたしのあとに来るかたは、わたしよりもすぐれたかたである。わたしよりも先におられたからである』とわたしが言ったのは、この人のことである」。

¹⁶And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

¹⁶わたしたちすべての者は、その満ち満ちているものの中から受けて、めぐみにめぐみを加えられた。

¹⁷For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

¹⁷律法はモーセをとおして与えられ、めぐみとまこととは、イエス・キリストをとおしてきたのである。

¹⁸No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

¹⁸神を見た者はまだひとりもいない。ただ父のふところにいるひとり子なる神だけが、神をあらわしたのである。

¹⁹And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

¹⁹さて、ユダヤ人たちが、エルサレムから祭司たちやレビ人たちをヨハネのもとにつかわして、「あなたはどなたですか」と問わせたが、その時ヨハネが立てたあかしは、こうであった。

²⁰And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

²⁰すなわち、彼は告白して否まず、「わたしはキリストではない」と告白した。

²¹And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

²¹そこで、彼らは問うた、「それでは、どなたなのですか、あなたはエリヤですか」。彼は「いや、そうではない」と言った。「では、あの預言者ですか」。彼は「いいえ」と答えた。

²²Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

²²そこで、彼らは言った、「あなたはどなたですか。わたしたちをつかわした人々に、答を持って行けるようにしていただきたい。あなた自身をだれだと考えるのですか」。

²³He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

²³彼は言った、「わたしは、預言者イザヤが言ったように、『主の道をまっすぐにせよと荒野で呼ばわる者の声』である」。

²⁴And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

²⁴つかわされた人たちは、パリサイ人であった。

²⁵And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

²⁵彼らはヨハネに問うて言った、「では、あなたがキリストでもエリヤでもまたあの預言者でもないのなら、なぜバプテスマを授けるのですか」。

²⁶John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

²⁶ヨハネは彼らに答えて言った、「わたしは水でバプテスマを授けるが、あなたがたの知らないかたが、あなたがたの中に立っておられる。

²⁷He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

²⁷それがわたしのあとにあとにおいでになる方であって、わたしはその人のくつのひもを解く値うちもない」。

²⁸These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁸これらのことは、ヨハネがバプテスマを授けていたヨルダンの向こうのベタニヤであったのである。

²⁹The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

²⁹その翌日、ヨハネはイエスが自分の方にこられるのを見て言った、「見よ、世の罪を取り除く神の小羊。

³⁰This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

³⁰『わたしのあとに来るかたは、わたしよりもすぐれたかたである。わたしよりも先におられたからである』とわたしが言ったのは、この人のことである。

³¹And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

³¹わたしはこのかたを知らなかった。しかし、このかたがイスラエルに現れてくださるそのことのために、わたしはきて、水でバプテスマを授けているのである」。

³²And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

³²ヨハネはまたあかしをして言った、「わたしは、御霊がはとのように天から下って、彼の上にとどまるのを見た。

³³And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

³³わたしはこの人を知らなかった。しかし、水でバプテスマを授けるようにと、わたしをおつかわしになったそのかたが、わたしに言われた、『ある人の上に、御霊が下ってとどまるのを見たら、その人こそは、御霊によってバプテスマを授けるかたである』。

³⁴And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

³⁴わたしはそれを見たので、このかたこそ神の子であると、あかしをしたのである」。

³⁵Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

³⁵その翌日、ヨハネはまたふたりの弟子たちと一緒に立っていたが、

³⁶And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

³⁶イエスが歩いておられるのに目をとめて言った、「見よ、神の小羊」。

³⁷And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

³⁷そのふたりの弟子は、ヨハネがそう言うのを聞いて、イエスについて行った。

³⁸Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

³⁸イエスはふり向き、彼らがついてくるのを見て言われた、「何か願いがあるのか」。彼らは言った、「ラビ（訳して言えば、先生）どこにおとまりなのですか」。

³⁹He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

³⁹イエスは彼らに言われた、「きてごらんなさい。そうしたらわかるだろう」。そこで彼らはついて行って、イエスの泊まっておられる所を見た。そして、その日はイエスのところに泊まった。時は午後四時ごろであった。

⁴⁰One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

⁴⁰ヨハネから聞いて、イエスについて行ったふたりのうちのひとりは、シモン・ペテロの兄弟アンデレであった。

⁴¹He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

⁴¹彼はまず自分の兄弟シモンに出会って言った、「わたしたちはメシヤ（訳せば、キリスト）にいま出会った」。

⁴²And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

⁴²そしてシモンをイエスのもとにつれてきた。イエスは彼に目をとめて言われた、「あなたはヨハネの子シモンである。あなたをケパ（訳せば、ペテロ）と呼ぶことにする」。

⁴³The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

⁴³その翌日、イエスはガリラヤに行こうとされたが、ピリポに出会って言われた、「わたしに従ってきなさい」。

⁴⁴Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

⁴⁴ピリポは、アンデレとペテロとの町ベツサイダの人であった。

⁴⁵Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

⁴⁵このピリポがナタナエルに出会って言った、「わたしたちは、モーセが律法の中にしるしており、預言者たちがしるしていた人、ヨセフの子、ナザレのイエスにいま出会った」。

⁴⁶And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

⁴⁶ナタナエルは彼に言った、「ナザレから、なんのよいものが出ようか」。ピリポは彼に言った、「きて見なさい」。

⁴⁷Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

⁴⁷イエスはナタナエルが自分の方に来るのを見て、彼について言われた、「見よ、あの人こそ、ほんとうのイスラエル人である。その心には偽りがない」。

⁴⁸Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

⁴⁸ナタナエルは言った、「どうしてわたしをご存じなのですか」。イエスは答えて言われた、「ピリポがあなたを呼ぶ前に、わたしはあなたが、いちじくの木の下にいるのを見た」。

⁴⁹Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

⁴⁹ナタナエルは答えた、「先生、あなたは神の子です。あなたはイスラエルの王です」。

⁵⁰Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

⁵⁰イエスは答えて言われた、「あなたが、いちじくの木の下にいるのを見たと、わたしが言ったので信じるのか。これよりも、もっと大きなことを、あなたは見るであろう」。また言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。天が開けて、神の御使たちが人の子の上に上り下りするのを、あなたがたは見るであろう」。

⁵¹And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

⁵¹また言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。天が開けて、神の御使たちが人の子の上に上り下りするのを、あなたがたは見るであろう」。
