¹Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

¹過越の祭の六日まえに、イエスはベタニヤに行かれた。そこは、イエスが死人の中からよみがえらせたラザロのいた所である。

²There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

²イエスのためにそこで夕食の用意がされ、マルタは給仕をしていた。イエスと一緒に食卓についていた者のうちに、ラザロも加わっていた。

³Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

³その時、マリヤは高価で純粋なナルドの香油一斤を持ってきて、イエスの足にぬり、自分の髪の毛でそれをふいた。すると、香油のかおりが家にいっぱいになった。

⁴Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,

⁴弟子のひとりで、イエスを裏切ろうとしていたイスカリオテのユダが言った、

⁵Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

⁵「なぜこの香油を三百デナリに売って、貧しい人たちに、施さなかったのか」。

⁶This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

⁶彼がこう言ったのは、貧しい人たちに対する思いやりがあったからではなく、自分が盗人であり、財布を預かっていて、その中身をごまかしていたからであった。

⁷Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

⁷イエスは言われた、「この女のするままにさせておきなさい。わたしの葬りの日のために、それをとっておいたのだから。

⁸For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

⁸貧しい人たちはいつもあなたがたと共にいるが、わたしはいつも共にいるわけではない」。

⁹Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

⁹大ぜいのユダヤ人たちが、そこにイエスのおられるのを知って、押しよせてきた。それはイエスに会うためだけではなく、イエスが死人のなかから、よみがえらせたラザロを見るためでもあった。

¹⁰But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

¹⁰そこで祭司長たちは、ラザロも殺そうと相談した。

¹¹Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

¹¹それは、ラザロのことで、多くのユダヤ人が彼らを離れ去って、イエスを信じるに至ったからである。

¹²On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

¹²その翌日、祭にきていた大ぜいの群衆は、イエスがエルサレムにこられると聞いて、

¹³Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

¹³しゅろの枝を手にとり、迎えに出て行った。そして叫んだ、「ホサナ、主の御名によってきたる者に祝福あれ、イスラエルの王に」。

¹⁴And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

¹⁴イエスは、ろばの子を見つけて、その上に乗られた。それは

¹⁵Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

¹⁵「シオンの娘よ、恐れるな。見よ、あなたの王がろばの子に乗っておいでになる」と書いてあるとおりであった。

¹⁶These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

¹⁶弟子たちは初めにはこのことを悟らなかったが、イエスが栄光を受けられた時に、このことがイエスについて書かれてあり、またそのとおりに、人々がイエスに対してしたのだということを、思い起した。

¹⁷The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

¹⁷また、イエスがラザロを墓から呼び出して、死人の中からよみがえらせたとき、イエスと一緒にいた群衆が、そのあかしをした。

¹⁸For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

¹⁸群衆がイエスを迎えに出たのは、イエスがこのようなしるしを行われたことを、聞いていたからである。

¹⁹The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

¹⁹そこで、パリサイ人たちは互に言った、「何をしてもむだだった。世をあげて彼のあとを追って行ったではないか」。

²⁰And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:

²⁰祭で礼拝するために上ってきた人々のうちに、数人のギリシヤ人がいた。

²¹The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

²¹彼らはガリラヤのベツサイダ出であるピリポのところにきて、「君よ、イエスにお目にかかりたいのですが」と言って頼んだ。

²²Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

²²ピリポはアンデレのところに行ってそのことを話し、アンデレとピリポは、イエスのもとに行って伝えた。

²³And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

²³すると、イエスは答えて言われた、「人の子が栄光を受ける時がきた。

²⁴Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

²⁴よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。一粒の麦が地に落ちて死ななければ、それはただ一粒のままである。しかし、もし死んだなら、豊かに実を結ぶようになる。

²⁵He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

²⁵自分の命を愛する者はそれを失い、この世で自分の命を憎む者は、それを保って永遠の命に至るであろう。

²⁶If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

²⁶もしわたしに仕えようとする人があれば、その人はわたしに従って来るがよい。そうすれば、わたしのおる所に、わたしに仕える者もまた、おるであろう。もしわたしに仕えようとする人があれば、その人を父は重んじて下さるであろう。

²⁷Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

²⁷今わたしは心が騒いでいる。わたしはなんと言おうか。父よ、この時からわたしをお救い下さい。しかし、わたしはこのために、この時に至ったのです。

²⁸Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

²⁸父よ、み名があがめられますように」。すると天から声があった、「わたしはすでに栄光をあらわした。そして、更にそれをあらわすであろう」。

²⁹The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

²⁹すると、そこに立っていた群衆がこれを聞いて、「雷がなったのだ」と言い、ほかの人たちは、「御使が彼に話しかけたのだ」と言った。

³⁰Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

³⁰イエスは答えて言われた、「この声があったのは、わたしのためではなく、あなたがたのためである。

³¹Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

³¹今はこの世がさばかれる時である。今こそこの世の君は追い出されるであろう。

³²And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

³²そして、わたしがこの地から上げられる時には、すべての人をわたしのところに引きよせるであろう」。

³³This he said, signifying what death he should die.

³³イエスはこう言って、自分がどんな死に方で死のうとしていたかを、お示しになったのである。

³⁴The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

³⁴すると群衆はイエスにむかって言った、「わたしたちは律法によって、キリストはいつまでも生きておいでになるのだ、と聞いていました。それだのに、どうして人の子は上げられねばならないと、言われるのですか。その人の子とは、だれのことですか」。

³⁵Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

³⁵そこでイエスは彼らに言われた、「もうしばらくの間、光はあなたがたと一緒にここにある。光がある間に歩いて、やみに追いつかれないようにしなさい。やみの中を歩く者は、自分がどこへ行くのかわかっていない。

³⁶While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

³⁶光のある間に、光の子となるために、光を信じなさい」。イエスはこれらのことを話してから、そこを立ち去って、彼らから身をお隠しになった。

³⁷But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

³⁷このように多くのしるしを彼らの前でなさったが、彼らはイエスを信じなかった。

³⁸That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

³⁸それは、預言者イザヤの次の言葉が成就するためである、「主よ、わたしたちの説くところを、だれが信じたでしょうか。また、主のみ腕はだれに示されたでしょうか」。

³⁹Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

³⁹こういうわけで、彼らは信じることができなかった。イザヤはまた、こうも言った、

⁴⁰He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

⁴⁰「神は彼らの目をくらまし、心をかたくなになさった。それは、彼らが目で見ず、心で悟らず、悔い改めていやされることがないためである」。

⁴¹These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

⁴¹イザヤがこう言ったのは、イエスの栄光を見たからであって、イエスのことを語ったのである。

⁴²Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

⁴²しかし、役人たちの中にも、イエスを信じた者が多かったが、パリサイ人をはばかって、告白はしなかった。会堂から追い出されるのを恐れていたのである。

⁴³For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

⁴³彼らは神のほまれよりも、人のほまれを好んだからである。

⁴⁴Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

⁴⁴イエスは大声で言われた、「わたしを信じる者は、わたしを信じるのではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたを信じるのであり、

⁴⁵And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

⁴⁵また、わたしを見る者は、わたしをつかわされたかたを見るのである。

⁴⁶I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

⁴⁶わたしは光としてこの世にきた。それは、わたしを信じる者が、やみのうちにとどまらないようになるためである。

⁴⁷And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

⁴⁷たとい、わたしの言うことを聞いてそれを守らない人があっても、わたしはその人をさばかない。わたしがきたのは、この世をさばくためではなく、この世を救うためである。

⁴⁸He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

⁴⁸わたしを捨てて、わたしの言葉を受けいれない人には、その人をさばくものがある。わたしの語ったその言葉が、終りの日にその人をさばくであろう。

⁴⁹For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

⁴⁹わたしは自分から語ったのではなく、わたしをつかわされた父ご自身が、わたしの言うべきこと、語るべきことをお命じになったのである。わたしは、この命令が永遠の命であることを知っている。それゆえに、わたしが語っていることは、わたしの父がわたしに仰せになったことを、そのまま語っているのである」。

⁵⁰And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

⁵⁰わたしは、この命令が永遠の命であることを知っている。それゆえに、わたしが語っていることは、わたしの父がわたしに仰せになったことを、そのまま語っているのである」。
